Chief Editorial Assistant MARLON ALLEN Managing Editor Student Life Once again another year has rolled around for the Howard Community, which also includes the BISON. However, the BISON asks, has any progress been made, have we learned anything, is there more Unity— what is the situation of Black People today? Someone most certainly can answer those questions, but after all the rhetoric, the answers seem empty. 4 One thing is certain, efforts are being made daily. Some not so obvious, some, very obvious. But none-the-less. they are efforts. It has to be assumed that as time passes, more people will leave the hindquarters and join the forefront of the Struggle, and bring with them more of our lost and floun dering people. We must keep working. s Howard, though traditionally a leader in the Black Struggle, is taking an active role in the current crisis. 6 Black schools are being phased out in rapid order—here today, gone tomorrow. The cost of maintaining schools is skyrocketing. and Black schools are the most severely hit. 7 Hawri Haag Cawal- xgttei fata This is national, and international, as it effects the entire 8lack Community, and it is now. Now or Never. this ideology, this movement, as the only logical theme for this year's publication. It is our read these pages, they will think about what they have learned, what they have done, and fight for the existence of our Black Institutions. 2s Sure, these next few pages are memories of the past year. 1973-74. 13 But lest we forget, if we don’t work in '74 and ’75 and on. there may be no memories for any of us anymore. Any new venture that is embarked upon requires a certain amount of familiarity if success is the ultimate goal. Students entering Howard University, or any other institution of education, for the first time require specific guidance that can sometimes be difficult to obtain in unfamiliar surroundings, miles away from the comfort of family and friends. To assist in alleviating this problem, faculty, administration. Campus Pals and upperclassmen all join together in a university-wide effort to make the freshman feel as comfortable as possible. The traditional hassles of registration, meeting friends and overcoming certain dependencies are soon washed into the life-stream of experience as the students go about the business of achieving academic excellence. 18 Campus Pal Chairman Marlon Allen lakes a moment Freshmen stop at Kennedy Center on annual tour of city. If I can just get to my room, to relax and escape, undisturbed n Face It—No matter how hard you try. there will be those days when you just won't be able to get It together Dorm Stylin’ } Meridian Mill's pool gives two brothers a chance to forget those up coming exams. Don't Worry, everything't under control. .. Dorm life is a lot of things to alot of people, but always, it is a place where the action, or interaction is. A break from the books to chat awhile ... Ah. a lucky break, too. Now. lor some serious studying .. It seems hard to believe that 106 years ago, the 53 acre area now known as the Howard University campus was no more than a little white building. And that the enrollment figure has risen from two to ten thousand. But. it has and it's comforting to know that this fairly sizable tract of land we tread daily is the home of the most famous Black educational institution in the world. Where some of the most brillant Black minds in history have studied and graduated ... 10 11 Campus Stills i4 Homecoming was officially opened at the L’ENFANT Plaza Hotel with a cabaret that was headlined by the Leadhead Band, a local group that performed to the satisfaction of the well attended guests. This event also introduced the homecoming queen candidates for the first time to the Howard Community. Wining, dining, and dancing went on for hours, until the guests headed home in sheer exhaustion. Pig Bowl One of the highlights of this year’s homecoming was the First Annual Pig 8owl. Surprisingly, this event and its name, was suggested by the Howard University Secu-ity Force. An ’’extraordinary football game, the contest pitted Howard University security officers. administrators and faculty members against Howard students. Howard Stadium was the site for what proved to be one of the most startling and spinotingling, but yet hysterical games the 300 students present had witnessed in quite some time. Thank to a last minute touchdown by the Pigs’’, the score was tied 6-6. An ironic end to a historic battle. Heroics included a touchdown by Stan Stone, the Most Valuable Player for the Students, and various eye-openjnp plays by Pig quarterback Hilton Green and their Most Valuable Player. Larry Wyman. Greek Demonstration Another part of Homecoming 73 included Greek Demonstrations. AKA's. Grooves. Deltas — all did their thing, as those present enjoyed the whole bit. Nabdam The Nabdam Compound, the Homecoming project of volunteer Architecture students, symbolized Architecture’s functional role in nation-building. The Compound, made of painted chipboard, chicken wire, polyurethane foam and some strategically placed two-by-fours, was completed in about three weeks. A replica of the muck and straw living quarters of the Nabdam tribe of Northern Ghana, these compounds constitute the structures essential to both tribal and familial survival. The Nabdam project reflected the fact that Architecture students could utilize technology while still remaining on the pragmatic level, the level of Black survival. w Pep Rally Weather Report Gospel Night Nancy Campbell solos Trust in Jesus Name 40 Variety Show Tee plucks away with Long Train Runnin'. et Fashion and Fad is always the theme of the annual homecoming fashion Show. This year's show sponsored fashions from such Georgetown shops as ANN TAYLOR and JOE'S OTHER PLACE. Downtown was represented by LEtDS and MR. MAN Approximately forty outfits were modeled by twenty student models. But the real highlight of the show was the appearance of a Washing ton professional model. MR. WONDERFUL. This year's fashion show chairman was David Cannady. Winiton A. Marcut eicorts Vernice Turner Homecoming Queen Mary Frances Spruce and her Court Each year a queen is chosen to reign over homecoming activities and represent her school as a woman of charm, dignity, beauty, and worth. This year the honor went to Miss Mary Frances Spruce a senior in the School of Fine Arts, from Chatanooga. Tennesse. Miss Spruce and her Court were selected by popular vote, and announced to the Howard Community for the first time at the Fashion Show. Queen with Homecoming Chairman Jon C. King and Matter of Ceremonies Mr. Sandy Harden. Half-time audience in Kennedy Stadium was enthralled by the queen presentation, Howard University Soulstep-pers, floats and a cheering crowd. 44 o Office of Student Life Vincent Johnt. Director My role is that of guidance and counseling on a supportive level for the students, says Vincent Johns, Director of the Office of Student Life. A four year veteran in this position, Mr. Johns oversees more than 200 student organizations which include the HILLTOP, Campus Pals. Liberal Arts Student Council and the Bison Yearbook. Assistant Director Roosevelt Adams, Director of Intra-mural Activities Carol Bell Secretary 48 Mrs. Jackie Nash, Administrative Secretary BiSON Yearbook Sweetheart Following four hard years of constant involvement and dedicated service to the Howard University community, one looks forward to receiving one of the highest awards in the collegiate circle ... selection to Who's Who Among Students in American Colleges and Universities. These annual selections, made by a university-wide committee, are the capstones of many college careers. Final selection to Who's Who is based on the nominee's scholastic achievement, leadership ability, community involvement and future potential. This year, more than 200 students applied to receive this distinguished award. Only 38 students (all seniors) made the grade. It must be noted that eight of these students were members of the 1974 BISON Yearbook staff. Unfortunately, just as selection to Who's Who is the highlight of many college careers, it also signals the end of the same. Hopefully, it also marks the beginning of long, fruitful business careers. Thomas Newton is a firm believer in the phrase communicate to liberate . A student in the School of Communication. Tommy has served as a HUSA Senator, chairman of the Communications Student Council, and vice-president of the Debate Society. Tommy also wrote an enlightening column for The Communicator, and was a Campus Pal. Forever in search of a new direction, Geoffrey H. Simmons is a political science major in the College of Liberal Arts. A native of Goldsboro. N.C.. Geoff has served as Sophomore Class President. Project Awareness chairman. HILLTOP business manager and Liberal Arts Student Council vice-president. Displaying true leadership qualities. Geoff, affectionately called Super Mouse by his fellow students, served as captain of the Junior Varsity basketball team in his freshman year. His future plans include law and public office. so The College of Nursing is considered by many as one of the more difficult schools. In accepting this challenge. Ursula Boyd, from the Bronx. N.Y.. has persevered. Helping others, she was a member of the Urban Health Program, a hospital volunteer, chapel usher, and a member of the interdormatory council. Ursula also was a resident assistant, the Vice-President of Truth Hall, a Campus Pal executive, and an executive in the Soul Squad. She marshalled in the Children's March on Washington and was an active member of Delta Sigma Sorority. Inc. An electrical engineering student. Thomas Bradley of Hamlet. N.C., has displayed academic as well as participatory excellence. While maintaining a B- average, he has faithfully worked with YOBU. the engineering student council. HUSA, and the institution of electrical and electronic engineers. A staff writer for the school magazine. Thomas has also actively participated in the Amani Rifle and Pistol Club, the Tae-Kwon-Do Club, and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity. Inc. One of the hardest working brothers on Howard's campus. Leroy Anderson, from Kingston. Jamaica, has shown that foreign students are a viable force. Having served as executive director of the DC Project and director of its supplementary education program, this Liberal Arts student led that organization through some of its more difficult times. Working with others from the islands, he was treasurer of the Caribbean Student Association and a member of the International Student Association. Moreover, Leroy served as director of the International component of UJAMAA. si No better an Omega man was he! Duane A. Brown came to us from Teaneck, New Jersey. Known to most as ■Joker' he came with a gift of giving. He gave volunteer service to many neighborhood schools and youth cen-ters as a tutor. He was also an active member in the Chapel Ushers. Intramurals and dormitory sports. Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, and Slowe Hall Council. Judiciary Board and newspaper. As an Omega man. Duane exhibited his abilities by participating in most of the fraternity's functions. Omega men have traditionally done more than the aver age man, or have tried. David O. Cannady is a good example of always trying hard. Working in student government as Junior Class Treasurer and Fashion Show Coordinator for the Save and Change Black Schools Homecoming '73. this brother from Mt. Vernon. N.Y. has also run cross country and track. A Liberal Arts major. David is also a member of the Political Science Society. Well, if you want a degree bad enough, there is no time limit to how long you'll work for it. Although Henry Campbell, from New York, N.Y., served some time in the service. he nonetheless perservered. His long career at Howard started in 1961 and is ending in May 1974 with a degree in Business Administration. Henry served as Staff Commander in ROTC for four years, has worked with Chapel Ushers, and is a member of Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity. Inc. 52 0 O.C., the city, produces its share of outstanding personalities. Michael Craig, a business major, is a good example of the city's product. He's worked with KAZI. St. Lukes Voter Board, and is president of H.U. Collegiate Chapter of the American Marketing Association. Oh, by the way, brother Michael is president of the School of Business Student Council and a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Inc. Striving to realize his goal as a doctor, Christopher Dixon is a pre-med student in the College of Liberal Arts. Maintaining memberships in community and campus affairs, Chris worked with the Howard extension program at Banneker. tutored, and ushered in the chapel. He also served on the Slowe Hall and Cook Hall dorma-tory councils and was a resident assistant. Chris is a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. Brother Winston Clarke, from Jamaica, West Indies, is definitely an asset to Howard. With a desire to take the tools of Pharmacy and develop homegrown remedies for the ailments of his people. Winston believes in the universal Black Community and its needs. As President of the Pharmacy Council, he is in the position to carry out that desire, but Winston also founded ROOTS. (Rebirth of Old Time Substances), worked as a Cook Hall R.A., in the D.C. Project, and most importantly, the D C. Drug Abuse Program. Brother Clarke was also Chairman of this year’s homecoming variety show. Devoted, dedicated and determined. Angela Finley from Denver. Colorado has tried to deal fairly and honestly with everything she has ever done. Sometimes this has resulted in tears of frustration, but nevertheless Angie has kept on get-tin’ up. WOMB. UJAMMA. D.C. Project. ALD Day. Children’s March for Survival. Coming from Jamaica. New York, Darryl K. Gaines was advised that he was not college material. However, this involved brother has not only given much service to the Black community and the university, but has maintained a high GPA at the same time. A member of Alabama 86 and the Political Science Society. Darryl has also served as HUSA Senator, Drew Hall R.A., Chairman of the NSACBS Finance Committee. Jr. Class vice-president and President of the Liberal Arts Student Council. An active participant in campus and community organizations. Amy S. Hillard is a Clothing and Textiles major in the College of Liberal Arts. Amy has been involved since her freshman year, serving on three Homecoming Committees, the College of Liberal Arts Curriculum Committee and the Kappa Sigma Debating Society, who awarded her a scholarship in 1971. This year. Amy was the Senior Class representative to the Liberal Arts Student Council. A member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Inc., Amy is from Detroit. Mich. Gail W. Hamer, from Gary. Ind., is a journalism major in the School of Communications. While attempting to gain worthwhile experience in her chosen field. Gail has been a HILLTOP staff reporter, a columnist for the Washington Afro-American and is presently a member of the BISON Yearbook copy staff. She is also a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., the National Black Communications Society and the Fredrick Douglass Club, the school’s academic honor society. Now a R.A., Gail is a former Truth Hall president. Willie Laws, a Liberal Arts student from Lima, Ohio, landed his capabilities to the D.C. Project Tutorial program. Political Science Society. Varsity Football Team, and dormitory resident assistant. Jig , as he is known around campus, also demonstrated academic excellence as a member of Howard Honors Program. Tho Groove Phi Groove Social Fraternity is proud to have him as a dedicated member. Linda M. Knight, a voice major in the school of Fine Arts, must be recognized for her many valuable contributions to campus committees. A native of San Antonio, Texas. Linda is a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority. Inc., Campus Pals. Frazier Hall Judiciary Board, Cramton Ushers, Howard U. Gospel Choir. Fine Arts Student Council and 1973 Homecoming Committee. Her goal is to be successful in the vocal performing arts. 56 And here's Marva Camille Liston! As a member of the University. Chapel. Collegiate and Chamber Choirs, her voice sang out. Away from her singing fancy. Marva found time to participate in the University Center Planning Committee. Operation Cleansweep. Cultural and Homecoming Committee. She is also a member of the Sigma Alpha lota Fraternity. Greensboro. North Carolina is proud of her! Rarely does a business manager become editor-in-chief of a publication. Ezekial Mobley, however, rose to the position as editor of the HILLTOP. In his climb to the top. Zeke. a New Yorker, was editor of the HILLTOP magazine as well as a columnist. Putting his political science major to use. Zeke was president of the Political Science Honor Society and assistant treasurer of HUSA. A former president of the Amani rifle and pistol club, he was also editor of the Howard Student Directory, and a member of the Board of Directors of the HU press. He remained in DC to pursue a career in pharmacy, and a fortunte decision for Howard it was. Vernon A. Mills, a student's student. is an active member of the Student Pharmaceutical Association. Chapter President and delegate to the national convention. Tutorial Assistant. Recruiting Chairman, Student National Pharmaceutical Association and Student Council Representative. He also belongs to Rho Chi Society and was contributing editor to the Student Council newspaper. .-at- Richmond. Va. is where brother Tom German comes from, and although he talks slow, he’s fast acting and fun loving. Majoring in Black Studies. Tom has been an active member of Campus Pals, the Gospel Choir, and the Julius K. Nyerere Black Studies Union. As the 1974 BISON Organizational Editor. Tom did his share, both on the campus and off. Tom is also on the Cavalier Court, and a member of Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity. Inc. A resident of Irvington. N.J., Nyya F. Lark is one of the most outstanding women in the School of Communications A journalism major. Nyya has been actively involved with both major campus publications. She has served as HILLTOP Copy Editor and is the BISON Yearbook Assistant Editor. During her third year, she was the yearbook's Freshman Class Editor. In addition. Nyya was a D.C. Project tutor and a member of the Campus Pals and National Black Communications Society. S8 Suzanne M. Randolph, a Liberal Arts student from New Orleans. La., had much to contribute to Howard, and she did. With a knack for hard work, she was in Honor programs throughout her college career. Aside from her academic performance. Suzanne was an active member of the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Soul Squad. Project Hip. Bison Academic Staff. Chapel Ushers. Freshman Steering Committee, and dormitory resident and floor representative. A salute to this sister for her continuous devotion to what she believes in! Not many students come 3.000 miles to school But Stephani Stokes, from Seattle. Wash., came and excelled. Receiving many awards for academic merit. Stephani was on tho dean's list while in LA and later in Communications. Putting her journalism major to good use. she was a top notch feature editor of the HILLTOP, and senior editor of Priority, the HILLTOP magazine. After reading from his pharmacopoeia. William Lynn Weaver firmly grasped the teachings and applied them to his community work and work at Howard. A pharmacy major, this active brother from DC was a helper at the Blackman's Development Center as well as at Banneker. In his involvement with campus politics. William served as a HUSA representative as well as vice president of the Pharmacy senior class. Displaying outstanding leadership abilities. Rodney D. Young, a pharmacy major, is a former president of Phi Omega National Service Fraternity and the Howard University Chapel Ushers. In addition, he has served as Finance Chairman of the Campus Pals. HUSA senator, D.C. project tutor and delegate to the 1973 Student National Pharmaceutical Association. A member of the Student American Pharmaceutical Association. Rodney is a native of Miami. Florida. From Teaneck, N.J., Valerie Williams will be more than ready to enter the classroom. An education major, she tutored young brothers and sisters for four years. To help freshman get oriented to college life, she worked on the Freshman Class Coordinating Committee. A ber of the Hilltop Board and vice president of the Education Student Council, she was also a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority. Inc. John E. Johnson can never be fully acknowledged for his many contributions to the Howard community. The list is just too great. But. '’Jay , as he is known to his friends, is best remembered for his service as Vice-President of the Liberal Arts Student Council. Feature Editor of the HILLTOP. Chairman of the HILLTOP Board, and Vice-President of the Sophomore Class. Whether in politics or communications. John excelled in all jobs he undertook Howard is indeed grateful to this Sagittarian from Buffalo. New York. Now a resident of Brooklyn. N.Y.. Virginia born Barbara J. Stith has used the talent acquired through her major, journalism, to aid the entire university community. A former HILLTOP news editor. Barbara also enlightened and entertained the campus weekly with her sometime controversial column. IN ESSENCE. A member of the Campus Pals, and the National Black Communications Society. Barbara is also a HILLTOP Board member. BISON Yearbook Copy Editor and author of the History of the Class of 74. fci The graduates in Communication have to be exceptional students, well-rounded, and well-read. Marlon B. Allen from Washington. D.C. is just such a student. As one of the representatives to this year's WHO'S WHO. Marlon served as Chairman of Campus Pals. Associate Editor of the 73 H-Book. HILLTOP staff reporter, and Managing Editor of the 74 BISON. It isn't easy to help everyone, but Marlon sure does try. Oh yes. brother Marlon is a member of Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity Inc. and the AKA Cavalier Court. Indiana has produced its share of campus politians and campus journalists. But few students hold both distinctions. Winston A. Marcus, from Gary, is one of those students. As Editor-in-Chief of the '74 BISON Yearbook. Winston has worked diligently on this publication as well as on the H-Book. A former senator in HUSA and LASC. Winston served on the HUSA election committee and HILLTOP Board. Even with a schedule this full, he gave up the little free time he had to work as a Campus Pal. helping new students get oriented to Howard life. « Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity. Inc., constantly striving to uphold its service heritage, seeks to bring the campus at large closer to the surrounding community. Through projects such as tutorial programs at St. Georges Episcopal Church and Banneker Jr. High School, it seeks change in the relationship of Howard and the community. This organization contributes to the saving of Howard University as a Black institution by providing a helpful hand whenever needed, whether needed, whether in the community or on the campus. 1 Tom German, III 2. Dr. James Walker. 118 I University Health Service (In Sickness Or In Health) What's worse than being sick? For many Howard students, the answer to that question would be. going to the Health Center to try and get cured. One of the most controversial services on campus, the University Health Service constantly receives numerous students with complaints about illnesses, ranging from the common cold to nervous breakdowns. Due to the increasing number of students seeking cures for all types of ailments, and the lack of professional staff, the lines at the Health Center seem never-ending. However. Dr. Samuel McCottry, Health Center Director, assures the student body that proper steps are being taken to secure an adequate and competent professional staff. The center presently provides the students with such medical professionalism as a dermatologist, gynecologist, psychiatrist, and other medical doctors and nurses. Dr. McCottry also assures us that the center hasn’t lost a patient yet. Or. Samuel B. McCottry—Director 120 Security Force Rapes, robberies, or bomb threats, the Howard University Security Force, under the direction of Mr. Billy T. Norwood, appears to always be at the student's disposal. In recent months, security has been extremely active trying to find a rapist who has been on the rampage at least four times in 56 days. Security has in the past, contributed the incidents of campus crime to the negligence of the students who fail to securely lock their doors, and women who allow men to wander through the female dorms unescorted, and or unauthorized. Security also handles the parking situation on campus, and have aided in relieving the campus of heavy drug traffic. Men continuously patrol the campus on a 24-hour basis, and they assist in avoiding damages to university property. However, security is like all other functioning services in that it has its faults. Some of the most common complaints against security guards have been that they often go to sleep on duty, or aren't available when you need them. But. They have a job as long as they are sleeping, but. if I have to wake them up. they won’t have one any longer,” he explains. 123 Patrolmen direct traHic ... 124 Post Office Being away from home, students are constantly keeping ail bridges of communication open. One major means of doing this is through the old letter writing trick. The H.U. branch of the Post Office makes it all very convenient. Students can send and receive packages, money and other goodies, without going off campus. 125 Founders Library A Place To Work, Study. Or Relax There are times when there is no place to go. but to the library, either to work, study or just relax. Many of Howard work-study students find themselves employed in various departments of Founders, or other university libraries. Almost all major schools and colleges within the university have their own specialized library. When a quiet and more subdued atmosphere is required for heavy studying or miscelleneous book work. Founders can be most accomodating. 126 Then if you just happen to be walking by. and have no particular place to go. chances are that you are bound to run into an old friend, or classmate, who also decided that they needed a place to rest a bit. But. do keep the noise down, like all libraries, the sh-h-h signs are all around. And they come in all shapes and sizes. l?; It is understandably difficult to cook for a massive group of people, with just the right touch of seasoning. but the Howard food service continues to try Director of Food Services. Woodrow Anderson, meets frequently with students to solicit suggestions about the daily improvement of food. These student food service representatives have been instrumental in serving as a mediator between the student body and the dining service. Among the most recent changes in the dining services have been the inclusion of popular music while you dine , and carpeting in the main dining hall. Cook and Slowo Hall dorms for the convenience of the students. 128 Food Services The menu varies from oriental specials to Soul Food to a vegetarian diet. The food service also caters dinners and banquets and receptions for the university affairs. The service also sponsors convenient plans for the students who have budgeting problems. Meals can be bought on the monthly plan with a choice of two or three meals a day: or students can buy coupon books that can be used in all university cafeterias and the snack-bar ( Punch Out ), as well. But. even these plans don't seem pleasing enough for the students who charge that the price of a decent meal is too high to pay at the university cafeterias. 129 Student Accounts One of the most undesired tasks of the Howard student is paying his bill. But, every semester it has to be done. The Student Accounts Office eventually handles all student financial problems It’s responsible for savings, withdrawals, securing of loans and crediting scholarships to student accounts. On Fridays, the lines are extremely long as students prepare for weekend expenditures. Almore M. Dale Head Cashier 131 Bookstore To help alleviate the problem of crosstown hassles, the H.U. Bookstore was built for the shopping convenience of the students. Books, supplies, toiletries and sweatshirts can all be bought for a minimum price, just two blocks from main campus. 1J2 One of the most serious problems confronting Howard University today, is the lack of adequate funding. In recent years, the university has made several efforts to help alleviate this problem. One such effort was the establishment of the Office of Development and University Relations. Dr. Roger Estep is directly responsible for the operations of this office. In attempts to bring about the necessary changes and development, Dr. Estep extends his capabilities to soliciting funds for the university from all available sources. Some of the most attractive sources have been the alumni, foundations, government and trusted friends and faculty. According to Dr. Estep, Howard’s relationship to the community has improved, as have the students’ relationships with the university. He feels that students tend to take themselves much more seriously in accordance with their purpose. Or Roger Estep Vice President tor Development and University Relations Academic excellence is the ultimate goal of most Howard students, and one of the school's most trustworthy advocates is Dr. Andrew Billingsley. His office is responsible for the recruiting and recommendations of qualified faculty, and the incorporation of acceptable and accreditable curriculums. Dr. Billingsley has always stressed the importance of students being competent in their field and. consequently, believes that the ability to perform will be one of the most critical problems facing young Black college students today. He also believes that the survival of Black schools will depend on Black student support. Or. Andrew Billingsley Vice President for Academic Affairs 1M Owen Nichols—Vice President for Administration and Secretary of the University. A university as large as Howard requires a carefully managed administration if it is to function properly. Records and papers of the Board of Trustees have to be accurate and easily accessible to those in need of them. Official documents and statements have to sometimes be issued by the university. The physical plant, security force and personnel departments, all have to be kept in order, ready to serve the university to their best capacity when deemed necessary. Owen Nichols, as Vice President for Administration and Secretary of the University, is basically responsible for the efficiency of the stated duties and departments, and consequently, everything is always on time. US Or Caspa I Harris Vice-President for Financial Affairs A university cannot operate without money. Staff and faculty have to be paid. Students have to pay tuition Scholarships and loans have to allocated. Thus, money is the backbone of any institution of higher learning. At Howard. Dr. Caspa Harris is the man who deals with the money. His office receives and records all monies and incomes from all sources due and belonging to the university, making disbursements by checks for payment of bills, salaries, reimbursements, etc. Dr. Harris confirms the fact that financial assistance is one of the most serious problems facing 8lack schools, but urges Black students to contribute to their alma mater as much as possible. He believes that whoever controls the money, controls the school. Since Howard continues to operate in spite of her financial problems. Dr. Harris must truly be keeping a tight string on the money-bag. A person can receive training in just about all of the fields of health affairs, here at Howard. The colleges of Medicine. Pharmacy. Nursing. Dentistry, and Freedman's Hospital, all offer professional health training to interested students. Dr. Carlton P Alexis. Vice-President for Health Affairs, sees to it that administrative and educational leadership is provided for the students as well. His major responsibility is to help improve the quality of instruction and the quality and scope of the university’s scientific research programs. He feels that there is a great need for more qualified Black people in the field of professional health. He is doing everything he can to help insure such competence in his students. Calhoun Oean of Residence Life If there ever was a name more familiar to students than names of other students, it would be that of Dr. Anderson. As Vice-President for Student Affairs. Dr. Anderson is constantly seen talking with student leaders on different subject matters. His office is mainly responsible for student activities, student development, and furthering the goals of the university Those sometimes controversial, he sees himself as being instrumental in helping students put classroom teaching into practical experiences. And. even though he remains controversial, he is the first person students go to when they have a problem with the university. 1J7 m William H. When James Cheek was a student at Shaw University, he was suspended because he participated in student protests. Years later, he returned as Its president. Unfortunately, some of the same staff members who were employed at the time of his suspension were still present. Of course, they didn’t remain with the university long after that. For a man who aspired to be a philosopher. writer and. as he phrased it. an influencer of thoughts.” Dr. James Cheek didn’t do himself any unjustice by accepting the position as President of Howard University. Since he became President in 1969. he has undoubtedly utilized his expertise in influencing thought on Howard’s campus in respect to what he believes Black college students should be about the continued disparity and equity that exist between access to the opportunities, rewards, benefits and problems of this society. He further explained that the same type of problems of oppression that characterized students in the late fifties characterized the same students in the sixties and seventies. Full participation in the political process and our ability to have impact on the reforming society are all part of what he calls the absence of social justice. Black people must be made aware that Black students in college anywhere, represent a very small minority, but are the leadership corps for Black people nonetheless, and no injustice has ever been overcome without a leadership that's dedicated. 146 The President During his tenure at Howard, Dr. Cheok has earned the reputation of being a crowd pleaser , and the only real student leader. Among his many accomplishments at the University have been the establishment of more professional schools, and he is presently planning a 10 year program to help raise funds for the university, stating that resource deficiency is the most critical problem facing Howard. Further accomplishments have been the acquisition of 108 acres for the university to be used as an advanced center for biological and physical sciences; hiring out more full-time faculty, and construction of new physical facilities, such as the soon to-be-built Student Center, and the Howard University Hospital. Dr. Cheek stresses the importance of students being basically responsible for their own education, but says he never imagined himself as Howard University President, so he really can't say how long he'll be around to assist. Many students knew him as Executive Asst, to Dr. Carl Anderson. Vice President for Student Affairs. One of the sorrows of his death is that now there will be students who will never know him. To know such a man of humility and stature is to love him. He never asked for fame or glory, for he was a simple man—a man who wanted for little, but who gave his all. Howard University mourns the death of one of her favorite sons.” 1$6 The future of Black Colleges will be a future that will include a struggle for their survival. We as Black students can not and must not sit by and watch our institutions die. In the sixties we struggled for Black Schools civil rights and against racist discrimination. That struggle in the seventies must be expanded to include housing, jobs, and the right of each Black person to have the education he rightfully deserves. For only when we exercise the right to choose where we want to go and the authority to choose what is best for our survival, are we truly being educated. That is why we must save and change our schools, as they are 0UO and an important part of our heritage, our growth and development. and the keys to our future. Together. 162 •� 164 Architecture Student Council The Architecture Student Council is an executive committee concerned with efficient representation. relevancy, productivity and aiding architecture students in anyway necessary. There are five elected officers for 1973-74: President—Bahbai J. Makenta. Vice-President—Daniel Sze, Treasurer—Janice Rainey. Senators—Nicholas McGee and Wendell Leonard. During the first semester, the council established a newsletter, NOMMO ; a Revolving Loan Fund: built the African Compound, NABDAM”, as part of the Homecoming Activities: secured the office of Regional Director for the student component of the American Institute of Architects, and also acquired a prominent role in planning the American Institute of Architects' Convention to be held here in Washington. May 1974. The council is in the process of establishing a School of Architecture Yearbook, a Job and Information Bank, a Scholarship and Financial Aid Bank, and painting graphics on the walls of all design studios. Yvonne Horne. Ed Lcwii, Louis Ranhine. Howards' School of Communications opened in the spring of 1972. It offered an inordinately challenging and exciting program. The school is challenging because of the rigorous study that is involved to achieve in a specific field of study. Furthermore, various activities such as Howard University Speaks and The Communications Careers Conference are just a few of the exciting programs that were initiated by the School of Communications. In the fall of 1972, the student council was officially recognized as an organization on campus. The council members began implementing projects which would enhance the education of the students. This school year the student council has continued the progressive pace the previous council set. The council has tried to inculcate the concept of Save and Change Black Schools in various programs. The council feels that communications—radio. T.V. and Film. Journalism—is extremely important in the struggle to maintain Black schools. Also, to save and change Black schools in a racist environment. Educate to liberate, and Black journalism ... a search for the truth are a few of the slogans which express the educational philosophy of Tony Brown, Dean of the School of Communications. Dean Brown, who is also executive producer of television's Black Journal” teaches that Blacks must learn to create alternative institutions based on a positive evaluation of themselves since they have been systematically excluded from the existing institutions. With this conception, the industrious and outspoken Tony Brown formed the School of Communications in February 1972. According to him. it is the largest Black communications school in the country, claiming half of the nation’s currently enrolled Black communications students. Under Brown's direction, the school has developed a curriculum and a faculty enviable to any proficient communications school. Black or white. A disagreement between Brown and the Board of Trustees on Brown’s unorthodox methods of obtaining equipment for the school, the frequency of his physical absence from the school, and his policy on faculty advising students resulted in Brown’s unexpected resignation in December 1973. Communication students, disturbed over the resignation, met with Dean Brown and Dr. Andrew Billingsley. Vice President for Academic Affairs, in an effort to keep Brown from leaving. Brown stated that the whole matter was not negotiable. However, in January 1974. Dr. James Cheek, university president, sent a memorandum to communication students and faculty stating that Brown would remain as Dean until at least the end of the academic year. The highlighting event of the School of Communications is a careers conference held in March every year. The conference, which brings together Blacks seeking jobs in communications with prospective employers, is the brainchild of Brown and is orchestrated by him. This year. School ol Education According to Dean Durham, Black education has traditionally been a carbon-copy of white education. This is good in some ways, as some things are common in education. However, some of the images used in teaching, in courses such as history and reading, should be changed to be more fundamental. It is most important to develop ego. strength, and self esteem. For instance, a Black child's reader should reflect something he knows. Recently, there has been much discussion as to whether the undergraduate program should be continued. Dean Durham feels we should continue to train teachers on the undergraduate level. He feels there should be an earlier introduction of the perspective teacher to the public school system. Along these lines he is encouraging the development of programs which would prepare Black students for going into Black schools as good, strong teachers They would help to break the cycle of deprivation where the poor Black child is taught by the inexperienced Black teacher. Elementary Education—French Club 222 M ,o fc Engineering The primary issue black schools must be aware of is the clientele they are serving, and they must design their programs to serve the needs of that clientele. In achieving academic excellence, it is not sufficient to screen out students who don't meet certain artificial standards. It is the responsibility of black schools to screen in students. Dean Pierre hopes to see the school become one of the most outstanding in the country. In order to do this, he plans to design a better curriculum. Dean Pierre is effectively working to Save and Change Black Schools outside of the University. Under a 12 million dollar grant from the Sloan foundation, he and his colleagues are working on a program to recruit minorities into the field of Engineering. Another component of the program is the giving of grants to colleges. Howard will be one of the few schools receiving one of these grants. Vada Butcher Dean College of Fine Arts Saving and changing Black schools is a vital and necessary task according to Dr. Butcher. It is her opinion that the administrators should address themselves to preparing students for the future. The Black school should have a Competency Based Curriculum , stated Dr. Butcher. Change should come in terms of the contemporary world, needs of that world, and the needs of the student. Essentially, the curriculum should reflect what the student will encounter when he enters the world. Reid—Acting Dean Dean Reid believes that the initial change in educating Blacks should come in the elementary and secondary levels, by giving Blacks the necessary background for a successful college experience. One of the major problems of Black schools today is the reality that too often too many institutions become so involved with social services, that the traditional educational proponents are neglected. The traditional standards of education should be returned to. so that we might develop minds that are ready to compete and obtain brain power-real power. The Law School is contributing to the destiny of Black schools by working on cases which challenge their existence. other clinical activities in the community, and conducting seminars to make the community aware of the social services provided by the Law School. The most important contribution of the Law School is that it is training and developing legal technicians to serve blacks and minorities in obtaining the equality of achievement in the modern world. 26? To Convention 71. no A Statement of Belief Submitted by the Faculty and Dean Saving and changing Black Schools is the responsibility of all people, espcially Blacks, who are interested in equality of educational opportunity and the inherent right to participate fully in the social system to which they belong. This statement is based on the experimental evidence that integration does not necessarily mean equality of opportunity in education. The School of Nursing implements this belief through its Curriculum focus on Black Nurses in Historical Perspective, attraction of black students with minimal effort, and student-faculty involvement in the Black Community. Anna B. Coles has been dean of the School of Nursing from its inception. Her forceful and aggressive personality has earned, for the school, a growing respect from among the other schools and colleges of the university, and a sincere interest in nursing on the part of the students. College of Pharmacy Dr. Robinson feels that Black students can relate better to a Black instructor and sees it as advantageous to Black schools to recruit more Black faculty. However, he has encountered difficulties in that there are only a few Black pharmacy instructors who have surpassed the undergraduate level. Future plans are to increase the recruitment program, to establish a graduate school, and to encourage other Black universities to enhance their recruitment programs. )44 Pharmacy Student Council In the fall of 73-74 the Pharmacy School Student Council initiated various programs, with an emphasis on fund-raising projects. D.I.S.P.E.N.S.E., an organization initiated by the council, involved itself with many activities, among them being Project Turkey. The highlight however, of the semester was the Cabaret, sponsored by the joint effort of the student council and the SNPLA, to start a Student Scholarship Fund. A candy drive was also initiated with greatsuccess The spring semester's most outstanding activity is the Annual Banquet, at which many student and faculty awards are given. It would be. according to Dr. Gandy, morally wrong if our schools should go down the drain. The School of Religion, as well as other schools and colleges on the campus, do not have enough capital to provide scholarship money, or to have more modern facilities, stated Dr. Gandy. It is essential that we clearly define our mission—the worst possible thing we can do is to emulate the white institution. Black schools must have a clear orientation towards Black prospec-tives and vitality—until we develop a strong sense of ethnocentricism and the confidence of relying upon ourselves. It is also essential that we develop more institutions — educational, economic, political, and social, because at this point, we don’t have the quantity or quality institutions we need. Dr. Douglas Glasgow Dean—School of Social Work Dr. Glasgow believes that the field of Social Work must be changed drastically. It should not be centered around philanthropy—but. instead, should be aligned with the people. He would like to see Social Work students trained to take control of social organizations which will serve the community. He is also interested in orienting the Social Work curriculum towards training students to be middle management personnel in the human service, involving planning, policymaking. licensing, administration of institutions, and legislating. Aliton. )7J University Without Walls Dr. Ireland believes there is a real need to conserve Black schools and that a fundamental factor in this conservation, is the projection of an image of excellence by faculty members. To project this image. Dr. Ireland says that Freedman's Hospital needs more modern facilities and highly skilled personnel. It is the people. Dr. Ireland contends, that play an essential part in the changing of Black schools. 375 Dr. Charles S. Ireland Director—Freedman's Hospital Dr. Vincent Roux—Medical Director It is our mission here at Freedmans' and the College of Medicine to see that good medical care is provided to Black communities all over the world. Dr. Vincent Roux, hospital medical director, said. The destruction of Black schools, he added, dates back to early days of integration, when Black institutions were given federal funds so that their own kind” would attend. Blacks didn’t take advantage of this hidden opportunity, he said, and flocked to white colleges. Recently. he continued, Blacks have become more aware of themselves and the importance of Black colleges and have now begun to take steps to preserve these institutions. In Freedman’s Hospital and the College of Medicine, the preservation of Black schools is very realized by the constant improvement of the medical education process. J76 A member of numerous dental and community organizations. Dr. Juliann S. 8luitt. a 1962 Howard dental graduate, has demonstrated outstanding achievement in her chosen field. Dr. Bluitt is a faculty fellow at Northwestern University's Center for the Teaching Professions. Previously, at the university, she served as Associate Dean for Auxilary and Community Programs and Patient Relations: Associate Dean for Auxilary and Community Programs and Patient Relations: Associate Professor in the Department of Dental Hygiene: and a Medical School lecturer. The 35 year old native Washingtonian obtained her B.S. degree from Howard in 1958. In both undergraduate and graduate school, she excelled and received various scholarships, one being the Louis Ball Award. Dr Juliann S Bluitt She was also awarded the Class of 1962 Outstanding Alumni Award from the Dental School. Her interests range from interior decorating to recruitment of more women into dentistry. She is a member of Who's Who Among American Women and her excellent performance and dedication to her career has been recognized by several dental societies. Dr. Bluitt is also author of several professional publications and a coloring book on dentistry for children. i Mr . Dorothy Burnett Porter One of the most outstanding personalities that has ever crossed the threshold of this campus is that of the gracious Dorothy B. Porter. Born in Warrenton, Va. Mrs. Porter received a quite substantial education, having attended Miner Normal School and Howard Univ. in Wash.. DC. She later attended Columbia University where she received her BS and MS in Library Science. She has also taken graduate courses at various times at Howard and American University, receiving a Certificate in the Preservation and Administration of Archives. Mrs. Porter, recently retired from the position of Supervisor of the Moorland-Spingharn Collection, has had an outstanding career as a researcher and writer, having published between the years 1930-1970. Mrs. Porter has served as Ford Foundation Consultant to the National Library of Lagos. Nigeria, is a member of the Executive Council, Association for the Study of Negro Life and History. Editorial Board of the Journal of Negro Education: Board of Editorial Advisors, the Booker T. Washington Papers, on the Advisory Board for the Arno Press Negro History Project and Kraus Pub. An important source of understanding the heritage of Black people. Mrs. Dorothy Burnett Porter will always be an asset to the educating of our people. Abraham S. Venable, the accomplished author of Building Black Business—An Analysis and a Plan. is a native Washingtonian, receiving his degree from Howard in 1951. Presently serving as Director of Urban Affairs for General Motors Corp. Industry-Government Relations staff, he is responsible for the coordination of General Motors activities in relation to minorities and their particular urban problems. A man of great integrity and service to his people. Mr. Venable exemplifies the qualities needed to become an outstanding member of the community. Besides devoting time and effort to the educational needs of Black students, he shows his dedication to the survival of Black schools by donating the proceeds from his book to Howard’s School of Business and Public Administration. Dr. Spellman's involvement in the medical profession is quite extensive, as evidenced by his numerous professional committments, membership in a wide variety of medical and academic societies. and various honors. His experience ranges from research assistant in surgery at Howard University in 1944. to his present position as Dean of the Charles R. Drew Post Graduate Medical School. Along with this position he is also assistant dean and professor of surgery at the UCLA School of Medicine and. a clinical professor of surgery at the UCLA School of Medicine. Mr. Venable is the recipient of many awards and honors. Among these are the J.P. Napier Award as Government Man of the Year, a fellowship for his masters degree in economics and the Atlanta Business League Distinguished Service Award. ABOVE Abuhjm S. Mitchell W Spellman Educated at Dillard University, from which he graduated magna cum laude. he went on to Howard's College of Medicine and completed his Ph D. requirements at the University of Minnesota in 1955. He is the recipient of many awards, including the Dillard University distinguished Alumnus Award and the William Alonzo Warfield Award. Moreover. he has lectured at the UCLA Hippocratic Oath ceremony of 1969. convocation of UCLA's School of Medicine, in the same year, and addressed the American College of Surgeons in 1970. In addition, Dr. Spellman has found the time to publish several professional articles. 179 Outstanding Faculty Each year the Bison features a section devoted to those faculty members who have shown particular interest in their work and have been particularly sensitive to the needs of students. Dr George A Ferguson Dr. Samuels has been a real front line soldier in the fight for equal recognition of Black efforts. He has sidestepped the sometime more profitable rhetorical approach in favor of pure accomplishment. His more than 20 scientific publications are testiment to his devotion and expertise in his field. Respected on the national level. Dr. Samuels has granted requests from such schools as Purdue. University of California at Berkley, and MIT to come and share his knowledge and demonstrates his creativity in research. Dr. Clifton Samuels Dr. Ferguson has been instrumental in establishing the Co-operative Education program in the School of Engineering. Through this program, students receive work experience as well as their usual academic preparation. Dr. Ferguson has completed 14 years of research in his field and has taught 14 years. 11 of those at Howard. Arnold ( fly by-Knlght ) McKnight Professor Semple came to Howard University via MIT where he held the position of Research Assistant. He is responsible for the current move in the engineering science curriculum. His present position of Associate Professor and Director of Computer Science has enabled him to develop and implement use of the Computer Laboratory which now houses the IBM 1130 digital and analog computer. Professor Semple has published a number of works and been a consultant to firms and organizations. Dr. Arnold W. McKnight, a professor in the School of Education, sees Howard University as being an intellectually aggressive domain. Black schools have to get away from the bad mores established by white schools, the doctor said. Specifically, he continued, we have to start being proud of what we are and push forward in spite of the money barriers placed before us. Dr. McKnight feels that Black schools hold a specific place in society in terms of instilling these attitudes in our children. He believes that Black schools should emphasize pride in Blackness and that our whole focus should be dealing with the survival of blackness and taking from white society that which helps us to survive. Academically, we found the transition from instructional learning in high school to a more independent learning system in college to be quite adjustable for the academic-minded students, and slightly difficult for those who were obsessed with mastering the get-over techniques. Yeah, some of us got-over. Others of us wished we could have, and the remainder of us seemed dissatisfied with just merely getting over. It is a scientific fact, that for every action, there is a reaction, and far too many of us won't be accepted into graduate or professional schools hcrcaftor. We were constantly tormented by alledged rip-offs since we became familiar with the talc of Mungo our freshman year. As student budgets dwindled away at the hands of elected officials, the suspicion among the student body rose. In such situations, we guess we ll never truly know the content analysis of particular betrayals, but. It can be presumed that in future elections, students will weigh the integrety of candidates on the same scale that measures their capabilities. Serious consideration has to be done on the decision, since every student who believes that he can take the campus for a joy ride, without paying for his passage, can't be elected. Nor are those elected, and suspected, ever prosocuted. Perhaps, one of our greatest lessons realized is that as human beings, we are imperfect. One demonstration of imperfection was realized when ’74 HILLTOP Editor. Ezekiel Mobley set precedents by being the first editor to have his budget frozen, and then later be suspended as Editor-in-Chief. for negligence, failure to submit a detailed fiscal account of previous expenditures and future allocations, lack of cooperation with the HILLTOP Advisory Board in policy matters, and adequate or accurate reporting of the board’s recommendations. Unfortunately. Howard, our imperfections continuously caused us great suffering. We procrastinated ourselves into all night cramming, and overnight papers. The administration building screwed us around in a thousand different ways. And many a day. some of us drank water, and called it a meal. But yet. we endured! _ We even endured the emotional shocks that were derived from th ackofunderstanding of each other as and women. In the process, we did become friends; that is all. 423 ■ The Finish” It just seems appropriate that at the end of the book, I finish just where I said I would, sick, with the flu. in bed. Hard as I tried. I just couldn't hold on any longer, and finally succumbed to all the elements. At least, though. I finished the book. But more importantly, wg finished the Book. That's right, the whole staff deserves a bow, because together, we did one hell-of-a-job. This year's Bison will attest to that, once it hits this campus. And hit it will, because we feel, we know, that the 74 Bison is the best Bison ever. No Question! It makes an editor proud to know that he had a top-notch staff. In my case, I had the best possible editors on the campus, the cream of the crop. Therefore, the book is. the cream of the crop. My thanks go to John. Marlon. Merle. Sandy. Brenda W., Tom G.. This has been an historical year, from the Watergate issue and the loss of credibility of President Nixon, the energy crisis. Howard's near crisis as we were shifted from one house committee to another. Tony Brown's resignation. Bill Cunningham's departure from the directorship of our library system, to the acquisition of new facilities for Howard's future growth.
