All of them were very young. very unsophisticated I though they all tried hard to ap| ear wise in the ways of the world I and very proud of their name, which was the chi of 59. The little ’59s were proud in another way too. for they were the newest students of the Howard I niversily School of Music. One beautiful September morning, tlie little '59s were gathered in Howard Hall, listening to a man named Dean Lawson. He was trying to drive some useful information into their little heads. Strange terms, like- your major’ . ”T hcorv exams . Achievement tests , and many others filled the air. while they listened with awe. By the end of the week, they were painfully aware of their duties such a- regular attendance of theory assembly, choir rehearsal, and student re citals. By the end of the year, however, they were proud of themselves. The choir had made its debut in Carnegie Hall in New Vork. and they hail 'ting with the National Symphony Orchestra in ashington. The next year, a sophomores. the little 59 found themselves well into the John I . College class. They really gave tin upper classmen roiii|H‘tition in theory, until they met up with Mr. Mixed Chord and all of his mixed-up relations. But June linally rolled around, and few were worse for the wear. They could remember the ex-ritemrnt of the hand when the new uniforms finally arrived, and the choir singing with the symphony orchestra again tan annual affair now i. Their entrance into the realm of upper class-men produced .1 decided change in the former careless lighthcartednc which had characterised the 'Opltomores of the previous year. Some semblance of dignity began to make an np|jcar ancr. and gone wa the idea that Howard wa the ideal place to have a swell time at the expense of the family. They saw Karl Garter awarded a Lucy Moten Fellowship for six weeks of Euro-jienn travel. W illiam Madden had his composition. Andante and Fugue, played by the National Symphony Orchestra in their annual workshop. Juanita Fitts was the representative for the Annual convention of the MIAC. held in Los Angeles. The student council M-t up a student loan fund, inaugurated the annual banquet for graduating seniors, and began having receptions for guest artist following the concerts. Many of the ’59s participated in the Opera presented l y the Music School and Drama Department. A Cluistinas Miracle. The music was composed by their own Mark f ax. and the libretto by Owen Dodson. Their hand, with shining new uniforms, made trips to Morgan and Hampton with the football team iii sub-zero weather. Those siifT fingers and cold mouthpieces will long he remembered. Tin new Fine Arts building was finally started in the spring of 58. They all made rial -orate plans to return for the dedication ceremonies. Hundred- of questions were continuously rucking our minds. How should we act? W hat approach should we take? What will the-e teachers expect of u ? Hut all work and no fun would have been dull. So. we were taken into tin family circle hy a big Freshman Party, where we met the upper classmen and were the center of attraction. As the semester grew older, many of the previous questions were answered and new one-arose. For instance . . . How many cc'- are there in a liter? How many grain- are there in a gram? hat are the mode- of reproduction of one-eelled animals? Yes. we were put to many a rugged lest: some made it and -omr didn't, hut. the year on a whole wasn't too had. SOPHOMORE YEAR Summer vacation was over and we were hack, ready to put our nose- to the grindstone. We had not only grown older hut we were industrious. energetic, teachable and concerned. And then it happened. Five Laboratory Courses at one time; not that one or two wouldn't he enough. Hut. time waits for no one and the lirsl -eincster ends and the second begin . We liecame self-reliant, serene, older and wiser, for we knew that we were approaching the halfway mark. JI MOK A EAR This year was not only one in which we took our regular progiam-. hut it was our la-1 chance before -eniorliood to complete the liberal arts subjects. Yes. llio-e students who had reluctantly lightened their loads by dropping English or mathematics had no choice. What would it he? V long hard year of extra studying or another year added to their curriculum? Most of us had grown more mature, graceful, expectant and self restrained. W e made up our mind- to give all our subjects a punch with all the oomph we had. The battle was a long one with ino-t of us trying and -oiiio of u- winning. We realized that the important thing- of life must he obtained by lighting . We became travelers and went to Indian-apolis. Indiana. There, we were the guest- of Eli I.illy and Company. Led l y guide-, we toured the immense plants. Hack home, we visitrd a local wholesale firm: more drugs and Hig sandwiches! SENIOR A FAR At last, we came nearer . . . and within eye di-tnnee of our goal. Only eight of the original forty-live remained; but a- usual, we had picked up some -Indent-, who because of illnr—. failures or transfers from other schools, had also reached this |x int. We were the leader- then, examples for our underoln-siiiej). Hut. our worries were not over yet: the comprehensivrs -laird u- in the face. That Comprehensive! It i- an examination on .ill four year- of pharmacy to prepare u- for graduation and the State Hoard-. But. -Indents like Fannie Jone- and Joe Lipscomb weren't too worried: for along with their tedious schedules, they had found time to make “WHO'S WHO l AMERICAN COLLEGES AM) 1MYKHSI-TIES . Hut as we look back, many fond memories are engraved in our hearts. We have laughed . . . We have studied hard . . . Wr have participated in all activities . . . Everything we have done has had some purpose, he it educational, cultural, recreational or intellectual . . Every minute has bcen profitable and a great step toward our goal. We are leaving now. and a- we look back at the thing- we've dour, we remember the big one- anil the little ones. We have our fond memories of bygone college days. So indispensable were his services, that he agreed at the request of the I'niversity to return after his retirement in 1956. This was most fortunate for iis. in that we have been duly inspired by his unequivocal teaching, timely philosophy, and ' mpathetic counseling concerning personal problems. Wr are most grateful for bis untiring efforts and houndles-patience. He will always be rememlrered in our hearts, and we wish for him many more years of health and happiness. 116 I’KACK!
