Students move at registration Fall registration, Sept. 3-4, marked the beginning of the academic year. Students decided what classes and professors they would take. For many, it was the first time to register in col- lege and at HP, for others it meant checking degree plans and checking progress toward graduation. Registration is always a busy time, get books and to prepare for the first lj?5 Dormitories change Among the changes it the beginning of the nitory switch-out. that took place was closed and Jennings Hall became a men's dor- mitory, causing the women residing in Jennings the previous semester to move to Veda Hodge Hall. Thomas Taylor Hall for men and Hodge Hall for women remained the The dorms played in student life, as the Hall became a real center of student life, and enhanced the closeness of friends we made over the year. Another change was the increase in the number of guest Sundays, giving each dorm a guest Sunday every other BSU says “Howdy!” Students packed the First Baptist Family Life Center on the night before registration for the fun and fellowship of the annual BSU Howdy Party. President’s Reception Dr. Ralph A. Phelps Jr., HP Presi- dent, headed the receiving line in the Veda Hodge Formal Parlor for the an- nual President’s Reception for new students. September 1985 Changes enhance traditions Initiation underwent some important changes in an attempt to enhance tradition. The changes allowed students, both freshmen and transfers, to go through initiation. Another change was that each stu- dent signed-in so that no one would feel obligated to go through initiation. Because of the more positive ap- proach of signing into initiation, any student who had not participated in in- itiation could now do so. Student Association President James Hamilton took advantage of this change. When Hamilton transferred to HP he was not eligible to participate in The last change affected the students who decided to withdraw from initiation before the two weeks were up. It required these students to forfeit their beanies, even though they had been paid for. The changes made helped bring about initiation’s goal—getting students to know each other. Rush provides organizations new members Go Greek! Come to our party! Join this fraternity! Pledging is easier in our University-wide Rush. The Senior Class not only set the pace, but then exceeded it by collecting 700 cans of food.
