Steve Freeman has served as 1981-82 editor, with Shirley Hessong as business manager. Also on the staff have been Sheila Shankle, Linda McMillan, Moyra Chisholm, Lisa Lucas, Bonnie Moran, Rocky French, Dianna Smith, Claudia Lopez, Tim Samples, David Smith, Darryl Poenisch, LaVerne Howard, Con- nie Jackson, Urquhart Wavell, Karla Martinez and Barbara The Sting, edited this year by Marla Mathena, is the univer- sity’s student literary and fine arts publication, published once or The Skin of Our Teeth Fall production of the Department of Speech and Drama was Thornton Wilder’s Pulitizer Prize winning “Skin of Our Teeth.” An allegorical play, the drama is a story about Mankind’s unceas- ing struggle throughout history to survive the catastrophes of life, rebuilding new worlds when the old have been destroyed. Directed by Ken Hensarling, assistant professor of drama, the play was performed in Coggin Theater in October. The large cast of 35 persons was headed by Karl Barnfield as George Antrobus, Mavis Throckmorton as Mrs. Antrobus and Tami Tedder as Sabina, the maid. 100 PETRUCHIO, played by Lamar Cravens... ... Taming of the 9hrew Spring production of the Department of Speech and Drama was Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew,” performed at Coggin Theater in February and directed by Dr. Henry C. Lindsey, department head. One of Shakespeare’s most famous comedies, the play is set in Italy. It is the story of Katherina, a harsh, devilish young woman no man will marry, and of Petruchio, the young man who does marry her and tames her. Heading the cast of 21 persons were Mavis Throckmorton as 103 The Marriage of Figaro The Messiah George Frederick Handel’s oratorio, “The Messiah,” was performed Dec. 8 in Mims Auditorium as a joint project of the Howard Payne Univer- sity Chorus, Brownwood High School A Cappella Choir and Brownwood Community Chorus. Playing their second year under Coach Becke Williams, the Lady Jackets had their second winning season in the seven years of women’s intercollegiate basketball at Howard Payne, defeated Texas A I 71-63 Feb. 19 to take the first ever Lone Star Con- ference women’s basketball championship, and defeated St. Mary’s 64-56 and Southwestern 61-60 to win District IV, before losing 91-56 to Texas Southern in Area 2 playoffs, ending their season just one step away from the National Association of Inter- collegiate Athletics Tournament in Kansas City. Coach Williams was named NA1A District IV coach of the year, and Jennifer Hollins, HP point guard who averaged 13.3 points per game, 4.7 rebounds and 5.6 assists, was named to the District IV all-star team. most points scored in a game (107 vs. Hardin-Simmons), biggest win margin in a game (55 vs. Hardin-Simmons), most rebounds in Eisenbach, a forward, finished the season at 21.2 points a game for 12th in the NAIA. She also led the team in rebounding at 10.7 per game. Renee Scott, forward, averaged 14.3 points And the brightest part of the team’s season is its promise for next year. There were no seniors on the team this season, and the Lady Jackets should return 10 lettermen next fall. JANNA EISENBACH and Yvette Sutl BATTLING THESE 210 1981-82 Scoreboard MS 212 213 214 HPU Golf Team Prepares for L8C Tournament FRANK MONFREY, BUI McPherson, Jim Mancffl, Donnie Smith and Coach Frank Monfrey of Howard Payne finished five strokes off the winner to take seventh place in the Lone Star Conference golf match in Belton in mid April, and was named to the second all- LSC team. Jim Mancill finished 10 stokes off and tied for eleventh place. Before the conference meet, HP golfers played in two Angelo State tournaments, a tri-meet with Tarleton State and Texas Christian University in Stephenville, a Texas Lutheran College The team, this year, concentrated on qualifying to participate in the LSC tournament and on building toward next season. Under the rules of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), under which HP has played this year, a qualifying team Several walkon golfers—Bill McPherson, Les (Bubba) Cole, James Cartwright, Donnie Smith, Mickey Wells and Doug Mancill to help qualify the team. Only two of the team members will not be returning next year, and some of the walkons have improved and are expected to be ready for serious competition.
