We have worked to capture for you in these pages those memories you wish most to retain. The 1965-66 school year was a spirit-filled year. This spirit had its origin in the Spring of '65g thus this is where our annual begins. During those last weeks of the spring semester, there were many who believed that the coming fall would bring the biggest and greatest year Howard Payne had ever seen. So . . . plans were laid then. Plans for building school spirit. Throughout the summer, enthusiasm grew until with the coming of fall it was quite evident that 1966 would be the year of the Big Spirit. As you look through the following pages We hope you will feel this spirit and cherish it always. For it is not the Big Spirit that Howard Payne is built on, rather a never-dying spirit! ' SKA In Dedication 1 'J ubii , ,v ... 2? 41: 1, ,V .4-.f,.-,-I -,.,,, of Charles Stewart For more than 15 years he has been putting up with students who don't know a Rembrandt original from a calendar print-and he still has a sense of humor. And that genuine ability to make others laugh is the thing that sticks in student's minds-even after they've forgotten what Charles Stewart taught them about art. He has worked to build a top-notch art department at HPC by working with his wife, Maurine, an HPC art professor, to transform old barracks into fine art facilities. And those old barracks were temporary 15 years ago. Stewart has been involved in HPC's athletic program for many years and is long-time chairman of the athletic committee. He is also a member of the college's publications board and at one time served as Lasso sponsor. And it is for this untiring effort that we, the 1965-66 Lasso staff, dedicate our yearbook to Charles Stewart. He has been honored many times for his years of outstanding service to HPC, stretching back to 1947. In 1962 he took the award for most outstanding faculty member and he has been cited for his presidency of the Lone .Star Conference, for his series of drawings and descriptive articles on historical West Texas, for designing a series of brochures for HPC, for a series of articles on Brownwood industry and for his work for the West Texas Art Association. His latest project is the Academy of Freedom mobile, which features colored symbols of Christianity. And someday he may be cited for that book he has been writing for years . ..andyears. .. A native of Blanket, Stewart is a graduate of Brownwood High School and attended both Howard Payne and Daniel Baker Colleges as well as Centenary College in Louisiana before finally taking his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of Texas in 1946 and master of fine arts from Texas Christian University in 1951. He is a World War II veteran with service in the Southwest Pacific-but anyone in his classes knows that already. And there is another thing they know-that he is one of the few professors with both the dedication and humor that students remember as the makings of a great teacher and a fine man. in' :ix 4 i. Participation in these ideals is the basis for the growth and success ot this organization in the past three years. Through this participation Gam- ma Sig has become one of the foremost organizations on the Howard Payne College campus. Through service, Gamma Sig is re- sponsible for selling freshman beanies in the fall, making numerous welcome banners, marshaling of the homecoming parade, placing litter barrels around the campus, and furnishing the Christmas tree in the student center at Christmas time. The club not only participates through service projects, but through social func- tions as well. Their constitution makes them responsible for an annual pledge banquet to welcome new members, as Well as for various other gatherings throughout the year, one of which is the formal presentation of an honorary mem- bership to an outstanding contributor to Howard Payne College. This went last year to Mr. Groner Pitts. Developing leadership through exam- ples on the campus, Gamma Sig is rep- resented in every organization open to the male student on campus and holds a commanding position of leadership in each of them. This is exemplified by the number of class officers, organizational officers, and yell leaders in our member- ship. Melba Woosley 1 .. 'H Q'Q?f 'P l 'lv I i I L .. w.',g'w. And it is without fail as the day approaches that we find our thoughts and even our conversation intertwined with memories of days that have passed but will never be for- gotten. Some of us who take pride in the complete mastery of our emotions discover a very strange and unexplained feeling Iwhich We would never define as sentimentalityl sweeping across our countenance and making us captives against our will. A very strange thing-this School Spirit. As I near the completion of my education here at Howard Payne, I must confess that I too have become party to the dilemma described above. Because ol this, I feel that I must take this op- portunity to express my very sincere appreciation for having had the privilege of attending this school and becoming acquainted with so many truly wonderful people. During the past two-and-a-half years, I have been privileged to work in several areas of re- sponsibility here at Howard Payne, this experience culminating in my present position as Student As- sociation President. There is no Way in which I can adequately express my appreciation to you all for the faith, confidence, and invaluable assistance you have shown during my tenure of office. Your won- derful spirit of cooperation and dedication to the task at hand has helped to make this a year of progress as Well as enjoyment. I hope that you will allow me at this time to say simply, and yet with all sincerity- Thank you all very much, Iim Glossbrenner President Student Association EDWARD DANIEL Brownwood DD1 RICHARD FINLEY Goldsmxth ALICIA HALL :AA ' 3, ELF? :Ax 1. It has proved to be a most exciting and rewarding year for our basketball tearn. Coach Glen Whitis and his team are to be cornrnened on their fine effort. Although the year began with some doubt as to the availa- bility of the conference championship for the Iackets, this doubt was proved wrong as the Yellow Jackets jumped quickly into first place, following a forfeit from Sam Houston State. 152 F-'E ily Gary Butts Manager . 415 let?-iiliqg 1 ,..-- - -- Eddie Nelson 13211 Dan Smith All Lone Star Conference 3 53 if 1 Mike Gibbs 3 U J eff Saari S 4 T George Byerly ' X Larry Scevers Walter Kempf Gary Day Marvin Uteeht df' Warren Bell Paul Aday F. Despite the blow to the college . . . students, faculty, and administration were given renewed hope when Dr. Newman made his first post-accident public appearance at the Howard Payne College-University ot Texas basketball game. A record-breaking crowd jammed the Brownwood Coliseum for the ball game and gave Dr. Newman a standing ovation as he was wheeled in. Following his appearance at the coliseum, Dr. Newman was transferred to Scott and White Hospital in Temple for a series of successful treatments. Dr. Newman spent several winter weeks convalescing at the home of Academy of Freedom Board President Othal Brand in McAllen. 'wV '!f' - ' as Rev. Bill Arnold Smith Bell Rev. Haston Brewer Dr. O. H. Agee was at Howard Payne only two and a half years, but it seemed much longer. He came back to his old undergraduate college as a man who had seen the world but chose to return to Howard Payne. With his distinguished military record and his Ph. D. from Yale. Dr. Agee had his pick of high positionsg yet, he chose to spend the rest of his life here. As academic dean, the retired Army colonel made Christian education his cause. He was a busy man-much of HPC's administrative burden rested on his shoulders. Yet, Dr. Agee had time-for the students, for his Sunday-school class, for Boy-Scout activities and for his family. During his service at HPC, a new rapport Was established between students and administration-he listened to student problems patiently and objectively. But Dr. Agee never forgot his main job-guiding the academic programs at Howard Payne. His tenure as dean saw new graduate programs instituted and approved and older academic divisions strengthened. It's hard to lose a man like that-one who did so much. But when the Dec, l8 car crash took Dr. Agee's lite, it did not end his work- his programs continue to strengthen the college. As Dean of Students Dr. A. I. Turner said during Dr. Agee's chapel me- morial service: Surely, all of us have iaith to believe that the seed sown through the lite of our departed friend and brother will continue to bear fruitful harvest and most of all inspire us to live better Christian lives and to render the best service possible to Almighty God and mankind everywhere. af. 1 n A 6 1: Mx 1-:F . fix' , ff. .I--a .r . ,-, 1 .3 s n x . , .. ,. 13..- .. .- , 45,455 Nez- . ,.
