Gczvin DMINISTRATICN As an orchestra is a symphony in sound, a stained glass window is a symphony in color. Stained glass is one of the most beautiful and permanent art forms in the world. The great cathedrals would seem unfinished without it, like a face without eyes. But one who loolcs at a window and sees only sunlight diffused through myriad colors, has missed its deeper meaning-the beautiful, graphic story of the importance of color to man. 0 It is the purpose of this book to select only cr few of the colors of a stained glass Window and to present to you their connection to the events and personalities of this year. Dedication IOHN HORACE KCAP7 SHELTON Second oldest Faculty Member in Point of Tenure Teacher of Mathematics Dean of Men Director of Athletics Business Manager Property Administrator Dean of Southwestern Track Coaches and Developer of Champions Friend of Students and Remembered by Thousands Who Enjoyed Your Cheery Hi There. TO YOU, CAP, WE DEDICATE THIS ISSUE OF THE LASSO MR. JOHN HORACE CAP SHELTON 5 Dr. Guy D. Newman H I S M E S S A G E Dear Students: As we come to the close of another school year and engage in what all of us like to do-reminisce, I am sure there are many, many happy memories of the days and months and years that have passed. Therefore, I hope that we may live in the light of every grand and glorious experience, and as the past continues to come to us on the wings of recollection, may we keep only in our minds those things that will contribute to the development of our character and the noble purposes for which all of us have dedicated our lives. For you graduating seniors, our prayer is that you may forever cherish the memory of your school days and carry into all areas of life thoughts sublime that have come to you from the teachers and friends that you have made while in college. For those of you returning this fall, we hope you will come back with renewed vigor and enthusiasm to make the most ot the opportunities that will accrue to you. Sincerely, GUY D. The touchdown pass was the Bobcats' only completed aerial ofthe game. Taking a punt on the 'Cat 42, johnny Wilson lateralled to fleet-footed Johnny Baskin who sprinted to the SWT 11 before he was smeared, to set up the only Payne score. EAST TEXAS 32, HOWARD PAYNE 12 COMMERCE-East Texas State Lions, who Went on to capture the LSC flag and a trip to the Tangerine Bowl, repelled a stubborn band ot Howard Payne Yellow jackets here Oct. 4, 32-12, before 5,500 fans in Memorial Stadium. lt was ET's third win of the year, and tenth straight athletic conquest. The determined jackets equalled the Lions in penetrations as each club managed half-dozen, but were able to advance the ball across the double stripes on only two occasions, while ET failed to score on only one visit inside HPC's 20-yard stripe. The pass conversion try failed, and it was 19-6 in the third quarter. Byer1y's 23 yards on two runs and an 11-yard TD pass to johnny Wilson spearheaded the Iacket's other scoring march. Byer1y's attempted run conversion was no good: ET 26-12 with 6:15 left in the game. Byerly passed for 217 of HPC's 304 yards gained passing in his 27 tries, as the Jackets established a new conference record in passes attempted. The old mark was set by HPC's David Walls in 1956 as he hurled 41 in the Iacket's 18-13 loss to Lamar Tech. HOWARD PAYNE 13, STEPHEN F. AUSTIN 7 NACOGDOCHES-The Iacket offense cranked up only twice-both times on Rgnqld Adam, Dun Mg.-fin Curtis Morries Guard End Quarterback touchdown passes from Dale Byerly to lohnny Wilson in the second quarter-but the HPC defense was in orbit all the way here Nov. 11, as the rugged Payne defenders held the Lumberjaclcs off from paydirt on the Payne 3, 15, and l- yard stripes during SFA's spirited second-half surge. It was the first win of the year for HPC, thanks to a last-ditch de- fensive effort at the close of the game which left the Jacks inside the HPC one at the final whistle. The first quarter was strictly defensive, with neither club penetrating its opponent's 40. Byer1y's first pass to Wilson for six points went 17 yards, and West's kick failed, leaving HPC ahead, 6-0, with 3:15 gone in the second quarter. West's pass interception set up the other tally, as Byerly hit Wilson with a 30-yarder on the final play of the halt for six points. West booted the point, and it was 13-0 at intermission. Ottis Hargett's 55-yard blast through the laclcet line in the third quarter set up SFA's only touchdown. HOWARD PAYNE 24, LAMAR TECH 19 BROWNWOOD - Howard Payne's sky-high Yellow Iackets soared to high altitude, then functioned beautifully in the lofty atmosphere to stop Lamar Tech's unbeaten string at 15 as they edged the Cardinals, 24-19, to the delight of almost 4,000 rain-soaked Homecoming fans here on Oct. 25. Besides defeating AP's second-ranked small college team in the nation, here are a few other Jacket accomplishments in the game: First of all, the Jackets scored four touchdowns on Alfred Holcomb End A A , 1 . Also, the Paynemen put together a dazzling offense, beautifully and equally balanced, to lead the Cards from Beaumont in every statistical department. Coach Bennie Williams' Jackets disturbed the Cards' equilibrium on the opening kick-off, when HPC's on sides kick was fruitful as West pounced on the ball at LT's 48 to set up the first Payne score. Byerly climaxed the drive with a 13- yard pass for six points to ferry Miller in the end zone, but his conversion pass was batted away. lt was 6-0 with 12:12 left in the first period. Two plays later, Ronald Ray recovered an LT fumble on the Card 36, and after four plays, including a 30-yard scam- per by Brown L. Smith, the Lampasas halfback, out with in- juries much of the year, scooted across from half-yard out for the TD. The run conversion failed, and it was 12-0 with 9:15 left in the first. Byerly again hit Miller with a 27-yard TD aerial in the third quarter to break a 12-12 deadlock. The conversion run failed, and it was 18-12 with 9:35 left in the third. The Techsans scored and kicked the point for a 19-18 lead with four minutes left in the game. But, some alert secondary work by Iohn Baskin and Byerly taught the Cards a bitter lesson on passing. Byerly intercepted two last-ditch passes, the last of which set up the winning Payne TD. Byerly crossed the double stripes on a splendid 28-yard run to the left to regain the lead, 24-19, and Baskin's interception in the final moment completely deflated LT's winning hopes. SAM HOUSTON 26, HOWARD PAYNE 6 BROWNWOOD-Sam Houston's Bearkats used every method of scoring yet devised for football as they success- fully defended against HPC's spread and wing formations to take a 26-6 LSC win in a unique Monday night game un- reeled here Nov. 3. The Jackets found themselves on the defensive almost all night, as they ran only 31 plays from scrimmage, 13 of which were in the first-downless first half, compared to 85 offensive tries by 'Kats. George Jackson crossed the double stripes from five yards out for the 'Kats' first TD, and Ronnie Choate, who had a perfect kicking night with three PAT's and a field goal, booted the point for 7-0 with a second left in the first. Choate's second quarter field goal and Iackson's 37 yard romp made it 17-0 at halftime. Dan Hooks intercepted cr Byerly pass in the third period, Grady Spikes Roger Sanders Wayne Harris Tackle Halfbuck Tackle and sprinted 85 yards to paydirt for SHSC's third TD, and Baskin was nailed in the end zone for 26-0 in the fourth. Byerly skirted right end for five yards to climax a 30- yard drive, set up by defensive standout Harvey Neal, who suffered a neck injury after his third interception in the final play ot the game. SUL ROSS 27, HOWARD PAYNE 13 ALPINE'-Sul Ross' sky-high Lobos rose up here Nov. 8 to win their first conference tilt in 24 games-since 1954-at the expense of the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets, 27-13. Daylon Whitehurst's fumble recovery on the SR 13 set up the first HPC tally, as Byerly handed off to Schlosser on the next play for 13 yards and 6 points. West booted the point, and it was 7-0 with 5:081eft in the first half. Dale Fisher plowed over for one yard for the other lacket TD to make it 20-13, but the Rossmen added insult to injury with another fourth-quarter touchdown. The Iackets' biggest crowd of the season, some 6,50U, crowed into AGI Stadium to witness the fray, unreeled in balmy 80-degree weather. Howard Payne directed its offensive praises to a single play in the second period, when the Jackets pulled up to a 6-6 tie. It was a beautiful 52-yard pass- run masterpiece involving Willie Brooks, the launcher, and Iohnny Wilson, the recipient who had worked his way into the clear far down field to glide into the end zone for HPC's only TD of the game. West's kick was blocked, and the game remained tied until the fourth period, when the Hogs took to the air to strike for two more touchdowns.
