Two Points For Herman The Iacket cagers were victims ot the breaks, hard luck, and some good hoopsters in their non- conference, warm-up games. They lost ten of fourteen oi these contests, most by narrow margins. Dropping nine straight games before breaking into the win column, the Howard Payne hardwooders, nevertheless, seemed to catch tire once they began to roll, winning tour of their last five starts in competition outside the conference. The Southwest Texas State Bobcats dropped 'the Iackets two games straight in San Marcos to open the season. In the initial game the Iackets led until the last tour minutes when Whitis, Moody, and Langford fouled out, which crippled the team. The next two games were dropped to the Lackland Air Base. Leading in both battles at hali- time, the Jackets seemed to tire and blew their leads. The dedication of the Coleman gymnasium was the scene of the next Iacket defeat when they met their old rivals, the Hardin-Simmons Cowboys. lt was in a tour-game tour of San Antonio that the laclcets broke the losing streak. After drop- ping two games to Brooke Medical Center and one to Lackland Air Base, they won the sec- ond game from Lackland 54-53. Hitting their stride, H. P. C. gave Brooke two sound shellacings when they came to Brownwood. Then T. W. C. polished off our hoopsters in Ft. Worth, somewhat more impressively this time. For the earlier defeat, Howard Payne recoiled on the Cowboys from Hardin-Simmons in their second game 64-63. The rubber game of the series with the Abilene Baptists is scheduled for February 4. During the 1948 season the Yellow Jackets kept the good name they have held on the Cinder paths for many years. Coach Shelton's boys climaxed the most successful track season for Howard Payne since the war with the Texas Conference crown. Howard Payne and A. C. C. were neck and neck throughout the meet, but the Iackets won the mile relay, the final event, to take top honors 54 V2 points to 53 for the Wildcats. The most brilliant performance of the day was Carter's 220-yard dash in 20.6 seconds, three-tenths slower than the world's record. To make almost a clean 'sweep of this event, Carmichael placed second and Duran third. In the 100-yard dash Carmichael took second and Carter third. Duran won first in the 440-yard dash. ln the 880-yard run Swanner came in second and Pate fourth. The other distance run, the mile, saw Wood come in first and Iolley fourth. Nixon cleared l2'6 for a first in the pole vault while Lacey tied for third. White took a second in both the discus and shot. Second place in the high hurdles fell to lay, and Hartsfield placed fourth in the lows. In the relays, besides the winning mile relay, the Iackets zoomed in second in the 440-yard relay. ln earlier meets H. P. C. never failed to make a good showing. At the Border Olympics in Laredo they placed fourth as a team. There were two individual firsts: Carter in the 220 and White in the shot put. These two also picked up fourths in the 100 and discus, respectively. Pate followed lolley for a third and fourth in the mile. Fourth place in the 220 fell to Duran, while the 440-yard relay team tied for fourth with East Texas. l ' N- 'A TWD ' D , T' W 'W' D -- 'Q-Q R. ,:a2g,,g,1.cf' '- 3 ' ' - - L -. -1-ff ygjw 1- xg, K , w -- ' N ' M ' ,- .nga 2 , ll l f H u f M 1, 1-1: H H Wemi,1,,. BOXTNG AT HPC Howard Payne had its tirst organized, coach- ed, and trained boxing team this year. Under the leadership and direction of Bill Hamrick, the Iacket sluggers trained for several weeks in preparation for the annual Regional Gold- en Gloves Tournament in Brownwood. This work was well rewarded, tor in the list ol champions appear the names of tive H.P.C. leather-slingers. Donald lay was victorious in the open heavyweight division. Winning the open middleweight crown was Wayne Phelan. The novice light-heavyweight sec- tion saw two members of the Howard Payne team battling in the finals. Iohn Scott Mar- tin, who had a TKO to his credit in an earlier fight, dropped a decision to his teammate, David Pauley. Another Jacket, Ray Holder, won the novice Welterweight division and had a knockout chalked up to him in an earlier bout. The fifth champ from H. P. C. was Aureliano Ortiz who was declared no- vice heavyweight winner after there were no other entries. Howard Payne had a total ot eleven victories to five defeats in the tourna- ment. Two of these defeats were irom the hands of other Iackets. Other members of the lacket boxing team who fought in the Regional Golden Gloves were Robin Guess, Ierry Hamrick, Leslie Fambrough, and Don Ankrum. Donald lay and Wayne Phelan, winners in open di- visions, are eligible for the state tournament at Ft. Worth. MENS INTRAMURI-XL SPCRTS Organized intramural sports for the men of Howard Payne is a comparatively new phase of the athletic set-up on the campus. Begun during the 1947 basketball season un- der the sponsorship and auspices of the Stu- dent Council, it has grown to include not only basketball but also touch football, volleyball, bowling, ping pong, and Weight lifting. Still sponsored by the Student Council, it is under the very able directorship oi C. B. Barbee. The purpose of these activities is to promote recreation and the building of bodies and character. The touch football tournament was especially heated this past season and drew favorable interest from the student body. The Has- Beensf' who went through an undefeated season in 1947, were defending their title against several strong aggregations. The season ended in a tie between the Has Beens and the Temple-Tenders. lt was decided by Mr. Barbee to have a play-oft Has-Beens Wolf Pack game with the Temple-Tenders grabbing the crown from the defenders. The basketball tournament is underway but with numerous games left to be played. The Wolf-Pack, last year's champions, are back defending their title and seem as strong as ever. However, they are being seriously challenged by the Temple-Tenders and other teams, and the season should end in a photo finish. Howard Payne received national distinction and recognition last year through its volley- ball team. ln the International Volleyball Re- view's national volleyball ratings of colleges and universities, Howard Payne was ranked eleventh in the nation. In the Southwestern Open Tournament held at Dallas the team won five consecutive victories over strong opponents. Cln the pictures below several of the members of the l-las-Beens and Wolf Pack teams are absent? Temple Tenders Volley Ball Team t r GOLF ln the conference golf meet last year Howard Payne's linksmen, as a team, won a tie for second place with Hardin College. Paul Huntington, ace Iacket of the links, was runner-up in individual honors at the meet, losing l-up on the 18th. Of last year's team of Huntington, Meeks, Dillard, Latham, and Cottle, Huntington and Latham return for competition this year. Several members of the Iacket squad entered competition outside the conference. At the Brown- wood Country Club Annual Golf Tournament, Huntington won the consolation of the champ- ionship flight. Competing in the same tournament, lohn Meeks was runner-up in the second flight, Harold Smith was victorious in the fourth flight: and Iimmie Newbury took away the first prize in the fifth flight. Prospects are bright this year for a winning team. Besides Huntington and Latham, outstand- ing prospective team members are Iimmie Newbury, Matias Rodriguez, Elias Rodriquez, Wil- liam Kemp, and Bud Woodruff.
