Staff members are chosen from an industrious group of students who try to give an accurate account of life and activity on the Campus. 'Way back last fall, the 1948 Lasso staff looked forward to the day when they could file all copy in the waste paper basket, brush aside all photographs, and forget all about lay-out dummies. Well, that day has finally arrived, and we can actually see the results of our various endeavors on the printed page. Except for the inevitable trials and tribulations that must come in the publica- tion of a yearbook, we have enjoyed every minute of it. My staff was wonderful. Trudie, Nita, and Doris can practically quote the page and cut number of every class picture in the annual. Cecil Baker is probably still looking for that basketball schedule, and I'll never forget that Pinky, Joe and Cecil stayed part of the Christmas holidays in order to meet their deadlines. To John Brite and Berl Cavin goes the credit for the pages of advertising. Realizing that this book is to remain for years to come in the hands of you students, we have tried to present a year of college life in retrospect. If you consider our effort suc- cessful, we have attained our goal. John Brite. Business ■ Cavin. Assistant Business Manager Marking photographs lor the freshman section. I have had such a staff, and would like to express my appreciation for the work done by each member. The staff, not the editor, makes a successful paper. In an attempt to improve our student publica- tion, an understanding student body is also a necessity. For your patience with our many errors, for your tolerance with our in- complete news coverage, for your compli- ments, your criticisms, and your encourage- ment, I thank each of you. In an attempt to serve as editor of our school paper this year, I have felt the respon- sibility placed upon me by the student body. I appreciate the privilege of this position. Brownwood OPENING THE SEASON In the opening game of the season, Howard Payne's fighting Yellow Jackets dropped a tough, hard fought battle to the Texas A I Javelinas by the score of 19-14. The Jackets got off to a quick start and threatened the entire first quarter, but were unable to score in the first half. Early in the third quarter, George Brownlee covered an A I fumble to set up the initial Howard Payne tally. Brooks Dozier scored on the third play from scrimmage after Brown- lee's recovery. Frank Barnett blocked a Javelina punt on the A I 35; Cameron Byler picked it up and raced to the three, where he was hauled down. A1 Langford plowed over for the remaining three yards. Jerome Buxkemper booted both extra points. The Jackets lost the game on a freak play. On a Jacket fumble Carson, of A I, scooped up the ball before it hit the ground and raced 66 yards for the win- ning tally. Unable to cope with the dazzling Howard Payne aerial attack that was loosed during the second and third quarters with quarterback A1 Langford doing the pitching, the Yellow Jackets avenged last year's defeat by trouncing a top-rate Louisiana Tech Bulldog team by a score of 14 to 0. The first pay-off came when Barnett went high into the air over the end zone for the six points. Buxkemper converted and the Jackets went out in front 7 to 0. In the third quarter Barnett raced behind the secondary and grabbed in the leather thrown by Langford for the ether Jacket touchdown. Buxkemper sent the ball straight through the up-rights for the second time. Score 14 to 0. Hamrick, White and Byler played spectacular ball throughout the bitterly fought battle, but the combination of Langford to Barnett really sounded taps for the Bulldogs. JACKETS STING BULLDOGS Tackle Back JACKETS LOSE THRILLER The fighting band of Yellow Jackets dropped a hotly contested, hard fought battle to the Aus- tin College Kangaroos 14 to 13. The Jackets struck quickly in the first period, with Coppic breaking over right tackle into the Kangaroo's end zone for the first score. Buxkemper missed his first conversion of the year leaving the score 6 to 0. Early in the fourth stanza Weeks and J. Williams blocked and received an Austin punt to set the Jackets up for their second touchdown. Langford hit Rice in the end-zone for the tally. Buxkemper converted for the extra point. B. Williams and Hamrick played a good defensive game as usual. Rice, Coppic, Langford, Cole, and Olson made nice gains through the Kangaroo's line. The Jackets beat Southwestern Pirates 19 to 6 for the first con- ference win. In the first period Rogers faded back and hit John Meeks in the end zone with a beautiful pass, making the score 6 to 0. Bux- kemper converted the extra Bill Clark, entering the game in the third quarter, went way up to catch a 40-yard pass from Cottle for the second T. D. The extra point was no good, leav- ing the score 13 to 0. Late in the fourth stanza Langford went over for the score, making it 19 to 6. Buxkemper's try for the extra point was wide. The score remained 19 to 6. The entire team put on a great exhibition of football, showing the effects of patient coaching and the traditional H. P. C. spirit of get out there and fight! JACKETS DROP GAME Two touchdown plays, one a crazily completed pass from Bill Reed to Alvin Kayes that was good for 53 yards, and a delayed line buck that sent Jimmie Williams for 80 yards, gave the Hardin College Indians a 12 to 0 victory over the Yellow Jackets. With the exception of those two plays, Howard Payne kept the edge the rest of the game, with the Jackets doing everything in the book but getting the ball across the last chalk line. It was just one of those ball games! Along with B. Williams came Peller, Barnett, Buxkemper, Meeks, and Weeks turning in good performances. The back- field spotlight rested on Olson, Dozier, Algood, Rice, and Cot- tle. The kicking of Rice and Cottle was particularly good. touchdown parade to thor- Scoring in the final three periods, the Yellow Jackets put on a oughly thump the Brooke Medical eleven 38 to 0. Six Jackets shared in the scoring spree, with Olson gathering two TD's. Stewart, leading Jacket ground-gainer, galloped 60 yards for his 6 pointer. Dozier scored on a 20-yard pass play. Gonzales scored in the first of the last period. Scoggins pulled in 30 yards to pay dirt. Buxkemper converted after two touchdowns. Outstanding play by three freshmen gridders, Curbo, Valdez, and Stewart, highlighted the play of the Blue and Gold. Jackets Thump Brooke Medical Howard Payne made their exit from the Texas Conference race when the McMurry Indians war-whooped a 13 to 6 triumph over ihe Yellow Jackets. In the first period quarterback Langford sneaked over from the 2-yard line for the Jackets first and only counter. Bux- kemper's try for an extra point was blocked leaving the score 6-0. Commendations to Dozier, who turned in a brilliant performance; Hamrick and Browning, who played the main comer stones of that forward wall; and to Langford and B. Williams for a wonderful defensive game. JACKETS OVER-POWERED BY INDIANS In one of the most astounding upsets in Texas Conference his- tory, an inspired Howard Payne Yellow Jacket eleven blasted the Abilene Christian College Wildcats from all hopes of shar- ing in the Conference title and the Kickapoo Bowl by dishing out a convincing 35 to 7 drub- The Jackets third period score saw the afternoon's most sensational piece of ground work, when Dozier broke through a hole over his left guard and raced 83 yards to score untouched. The passing from Langford to Byler clicked twice for touchdowns. In the final quarter, the Jackets put on an exhibition of field goal kicking as guard Buxkemper dropped back and booted a 35-yard field goal. With never more than two or three points difference during the entire 40 minutes of play, both teams displayed a determined battle to chase the other off the hardwood. While Moore and Langford were gaining most of the scoring honors, Meeks and Dozier turned in a top performance with some outstanding defensive work. Clark continued his stellar play by hustling the ball off the backboards, but had some difficulties during the first half that bothered him. GOING JACKETS NICE 1948 BOXING SEASON WOMEN'S SPORTS This year Howard Payne, under the capable leadership of the Stu- dent Council, has set up activities in which all students may par- ticipate. Volley Ball, Ping Pong, and Bowling were carried on in the Physical Education Building. Everyone who made use of these opportunities had a good time. MINOR SPORTS AT The purposes of the Girls' Physical Education Department is to offer to each student the opportunity to participate in wholesome, vigorous activities suited to individual needs and interests; to further better social relationships; and to help produce more abundant health. It also offers the opportunity for acquiring knowledge and skills that may be used in recreational pursuits or for the use of leisure time. Activity courses are required for all freshman and sophomore girls. Team activities include sports such as basketball, volley ball, and soft ball. The spring semester brought the advent of such sports as archery, badminton, table tennis, and bowling. This past semester plans were made for different types of intramural activities. In the future the Physical Education Department, under the direction of Miss Agnes Gamer, will sponsor various clubs for physical education students. HOWARD PAYNE SO WELL Greetings, chum . . .
