CLUB eiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii OFFICERS OF THE ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION Athletic Association consists of all the students and members of the faculty of Howard Payne College who are willing to pay an annual fee of fifty cents. This Association has complete control of all athletic activities connected with the College. It performs this duty either as an association or through its executive committee, the Athletic Council. Thus our athletics are conducted on democratic principles, being of the students, for the students, and by the students. All serious or doubtful questions that concern the members of the Associa- tion are settled by the organization as a whole, and the Council is responsible for its actions to the Association. With our athletic affairs in the hands of the students and the faculty, and with the executive power vested in a good, strong Council, we have no fear of failure. FOOT BALL 1912 FOOT BALL Leslie Sansom BIG” SANSOM united good head work with about two hundred pounds of avoirdupois, and made one of the best Guards on Howard Payne’s 1906-’07 team. Two season’s loss of practice did not keep him from coming back this year stronger than ever. He was elected Captain, and his wise super- vision, together with his good work at tackle and Guard, made him a valuable IF Robert Fielder was noted for one thing more than another it was his earnest, conscientious work. This won for him the honor of being one of the strongest men on the team. He was fast, strong and used his head, and the result was that he held down the position of Full-back with credit. FOOT BALL—Continued H. G. Livingston ACCORDING to Coach Glaze of Baylor University, the best first year man in Texas this year was H. G. Livingston, the fast Right End on the Howard Payne squad. His specialty was catching forward passes and making a long run for a touchdown. He was awarded the Sturdivant Sweater for the most successful work on this year’s team, and was also given a sweater by Prof. Gantt for special work in one of the THE man to succeed Sansom as Cap- tain is one of the best Tackles that Howard Payne has ever had. Ivy Ward, a good all-round athlete, played his first foot ball this season, and starred in every game. His success lay in his ability to hit the line hard and at the proper time. No one doubts the wisdom of those who elected him to lead next year’s team to victory. FOOT BALL — Continued Alonzo Bauchman Alonzo bauch man played just enough football on the R. R. Lee High School Team of Burnet to get the spirit of the game into his system. He played Center, and made this one of the strongest positions on the Howard Payne team. He is not only noted for the way in which he covered the ball, but also for the systematic way in which he encouraged the team by his talk. Tom King ONR of the fastest Half-backs on the 1909 team was Tom King. After losing one season of practice he came back this year stronger and faster than ever. He played both Right and Left Half-back, and could be depended on at all times to carry the ball just as far as grit, fast running, and scientific work would go. In all his work for Howard Payne, King has never been subbed. FOOT BALL — Continued IT is not often that you find a man who can punt the ball seventy yards, but this is the record of Ernest Mims. This boy’s toe can win him a place on most any college team in the country. He averaged about fifty yards during the last season. Besides being a good punter he was strong on the line, where he played Left Guard. Bob Green Right Tackle IT is an admitted fact that the men on the line often play the best ball and take the hardest knocks, and still receive the least credit for their work. However this did not keep Bob Green, a 1906-’07 star, from giving the best that he had in every game. Green played Guard dur- ing the entire season, and if he had a “yellow streak” no one was able to find it. FOOT BALL — Continued A man deserves much credit for preaching on Sunday and then putting on foot ball togs and making himself a gridiron hero on Monday. This is B. B. Crimm, who realizes that he can do be'ter work as a leader of men, if he builds up his physique, than he could if he should neglect his exercise through fear of hurting his ministerial dignity. Crimm won his letter by his good work at Guard. Lee Giddings Led End THE old expression “little but loud” would certainly be applicable to Lee Giddings, who starred at Quarter and Left End. He was acknowledged to be one of the best players ever to wear a Howard Payne uniform. His strongest points were in bringing up punts, and in good tackling. He was given a sweater by Prof. Humphreys for his meritorious work. BASKET BALL BOYS’ BASKET BALL SQUAD BASKET BALL Robert Wagnon T OB WAGNON, a Foot Ball star, -L' who came in too late to win his letter in that game, made good this loss in Basket Ball. Bob played Guard, but if he got his hands on the ball in the vicinity of our goal, he had no scruples whatever in tossing it through the ring. Clyde Woods WE never know a man’s strength until he is tested, and that is the reason that we now know Clyde Woods' ability as a Forward. His strength had never been really tested until the last game with Daniel Baker, when Weedon was sick and Woods was told to put a few through. Previous to this game Clyde had been given orders to play far down the field to strengthen the Guards. He obeyed these instructions like a true soldier, and in the last game he made seven field goals under the most difficult conditions. BASKET BALL Continued ONE of the best things that can be said about H. G. Purl, who has been playing Guard, is that he could always be depended upon. He was never “in the air,” and was always on hand to rob his opponent of a goal. Purl will be on our team next year, and if any man thinks he can beat him out of his position, he will find a hard task to perform. TN spite of the fact that this was Weedon’s first year in Basket Ball, he was considered by many the star of the team. Not only his brilliant playing but his consistent work throughout the entire season, won for him a reputation in Basket Ball history, and we can al- ready foresee victory for Howard Payne next season that will be due to his good work. BASKET B AL L—C o n t i n u e d Fred Alexander “ A LEX” stands six feet two inches, in his socks or out of them, and this, coupled with his three feet of vertical jump, makes it somewhat difficult to get the ball over him. He played Center on last season’s team and had no difficulty in coming in after Foot Ball season had closed and taking his old position against strong opposition. Alexander will be on our team next year, and if you want to know who will be the All-State Center, just look on page 109 of The Lasso. BASKET BALL FIRST TEAM Winners of “H” in Girls’ Basket Ball, popularly called the Hoodoos. GIRLS’ BASKET BALL SQUAD A PAGE OF HOWARD PAYNE YELLS BASE BALL BASEBALL SQUAD BASE BALL BASE BALL BASE BALL C( TRACK V vOWARD PAYNE holds one of the most brilliant records J—X in Track and Field work held by any college in Texas. Last year we took second place in the State Meet at San Antonio, with only four men, when we were against teams from the best institu- tions in the State, some of which were represented by teams of fourteen men. Our record in the Southwest Texas League is unequaled. We now have the honor of having an ex-member of our team to represent the United States at the Olympian games. Guinn Henry held the State records on the one hundred and the two hundred and twenty yard dashes, while he was in Howard Payne. It is still too early in the season to speak with certainty about this year’s team. We still have King, who can vault ten feet six inches, and is also a good runner, making the hurdles his specialty. We also have Livingston, who has defeated some of the fastest sprinters in the State. For the weights we have Brooks, Sansom, Alexander and Bodenhamer. There are several new men, all of whom are making good, and there is no reason why our team should not be up to its usual standard.
