i THE FUTURE Glad pddphncq In the spring of 1962, I landed at LaGuardia Field from an assignment in Europe with the New York Times. I had been out of the coun- try for several years and was so happy to be back again. There is no rest for the weary is cer- tainly true of newspaper people, for soon I was whisked out to California to cover a premiere. As I alighted from my plane, whom should I see waving good-bye to her attractive producer hus- band than Bobbie Large. We staged an old- fashioned reunion right there at the airport and Bobbie insisted that I make her home my head- quarters while out on the coast. Soon we were speeding out Wilshire Boule- vard in Bobbie's swank convertible. She was full of conversation and news about our old classmates back in Nashville, for Bobbie realized I had been completely out of touch with them for so long. I was delighted to hear her say that Harriett Pugh, Maxine Durham, and Loretta Gunter had been attendants at her wedding, and that the best man had been Frank Hazelwood, a very successful radio actor, better known as Luigi It seems that Bobbie's husband and Frank are the very closest of friends.- We were passing a theater now and I hap- pened to notice the following sign: See Beverly Whitsett and Gene Pinegar starring in Paradise. There was a huge picture of the two on a tropi- cal island. We sped around the curves in Beverly Hills and soon came to Bobbie's home. Upon enter- ing the living room, I saw a portrait of Mary Newbern. Bobbie told me Mary was now an in- terior decorator in New York. We sat down for a chat in the den before a beautiful log fire. On the table beside me, I spied a book entitled 'How to Be a Successful Pharmacistj by Shirley Todd. The illustrations had been done by Ruby Cooke. Believe it or not, they were outstanding. As I was still enjoying single blessedness, I was naturally interested in the marital adventures of our classmates and said, Do tell me about who married whom. lN7ell, Marjorie Grantham is married, I un- derstand, and is proving to be the perfect house- wife. You remember, of course, that Bernice Bacigalupo and Rowena Rothman were married in their senior year? I hear that both are quite active in Parent-Teacher work at Howard and good reason they have for being. Each has dar- ling children in school there. Lois Anderson and Jean Croney are also married and are as good friends as ever, I hear. Hold your breath. I hear Bobby Dixon is in big-time construction work and part of his crew consists of Billy Stewart, Bobby Eakes and Mar- garet Fullerf' V . What on earth does Margaret 5'9 F Oh, she's the foreman. You krtow, ways did love to give ordc.s.
