As We reminisce about dances, games, Homecoming, plays, and never-to-he-forgotten friendships, we re- alize that this, our last year, is teeming with the stuff that dreams are made of-a wealth of memories to last a lifetime. With the help of Leo, the school mascot, we shall again wander through HoWard's fa- miliar halls and spend a typical day with old buddies and pals-in class, in club, on the field, in the gym, for work and for fun. Jones usual- ly ends morning announcements over the intercom with these familiar words. The regular school day consists of six fifty-six minute class periods. The number of major subjects that a student carries depends upon his course of study. At Howard High, there are five types of diplomas awarded: Academic, Com- mercial Stenography, Commercial Cen- eral Business, General, and Vocational Agriculture. English The direct object always takes a straight line, says Rachel Sykes to Robert Peters. Madge O'Donnell is striving to find which goes where and when with another sentence. Connie Ben- nett points out the Missis- sippi River to Cecil Per- kins, Francis Johns, and Richard Larrick. xr 9 i Problems of Democracy Help is what criminals need, says Doris Greger. Donald Wessel and David Anderson agree that it is the best possible solution. In P.O.D., political, social, and economic problems are discussed. Physics Shirley Somerville, Sue Young, and John King take notes as Jimmy Quinlan demonstrates a principle in physics. Biology Bill Hesson explains the func- tion of the liver to Barbara Dorsey while Linda Phillips points it out to Allan Sosslau. JOSEPH MCNEII, DONALD HlLBERT Pllysivs anll fllfielnistry Biology Mevhanival Drawing Algebra Future mathematicians and scientists need a good back- ground in mathematics and algebra. Charles lager and David Munro are working some problems. Checking their work are Ruth Phillips and Kay Romoser. Psychology It's always interesting to talk about one's self. Jerry O'lVlara, Vivian Boswell, Louis Hobson, and Betty Young discuss problems brought up for discussion in psychology. Bookkeeping Why keep books? Stu- dents at Howard High find the answer through con- stant practice. Kay Maisel, Pat Daniels, and Lonnie Bishop work steadily to complete their entries for the day. Elementary Business Training Eulletin boards help to how the progress of a lass. Brenda Rice, Jack Iraft, and Brenda Weh- lnd are fixing one to show he advantages of keeping budget in Elementary lusiness Training. Typing s'No fair looking at the keys. This is Mr. Fisher's primary comment to his first year typing students. These pupils are struggling through a speed test. Stenography Secretaries of tomorrow get their training through ex- perience. ,lcrry Harrison dictates a letter to Judy Gould as Rose Marie Trip- lett, Rosa Lee Mauck, Pat King, and Charlotte Mer- son transcribe their notes. School Secretary Being Mr. Jones' secretary is not an easy joh. Mrs. Anna Peddicord, who serves in this capacity, knows this only too well. Facing all sorts of questions and problems during the day, Mrs. Peddi- cord is always smiling and willing to help everyone. 'Wm-4. School Bookkeeper Rose Marie Triplett, the student hook- keeper, does an efficient job of keeping the school hooks. Few people realize the time she spends and the work she does. She takes an entire period every day to organize the accounts and keep them up to date. Student Secretary Each day two students serve as secre- taries in the offices. One works in the General Office with Mrs. Peddicordg while the other works for Miss Anna- belle Ferguson in the Guidance Office. These pupils assume the regular respon- sibilities of a secretary and learn through their experiences. Rosa Lee Mauek is shown operating the ditto machine. Fourth Period Bring' The competent members of the staff that furnish our lunches are Cosette Harding, Betty Heber, Thelma Heber and Dora Deavers. They serve an aver- age of 285 lunches daily. Please take only one straw,', says Rose Mane Trlplet Mllk is available for all those who brxng lunches as well as for tho e who buy lunch. Welcomecl Break Not only do the students enjoy lunch, but the teachers look forward to this break also. Although the boys and girls seem to enjoy going to classes together, they welcome the separation from the oppo- site sex at lunch. All's quiet on the front. Roger and Jim clean up the refuse after the hungry horde returns to class. ,1?2f?!1z-.filers?,hifi-ia.t4i? A 5.waaW 1: Q... ,W M . ,,. Chorus The Chorus is made up of juniors and seniors numbering about one hundred fifty this year. They practice during their regular class periods on both sacred and secular music. Some are in an all-girls' class while others are in the mixed class. However, all members receive the same amount of credit. Five seniors from the Chorus were chosen to represent How- ard High in the All-Maryland Chorus. They entertained teach- ers at the Maryland State Teachers, Convention in Octo- ber. The members are: Gail Lang, Rosa Lee Mauck, Brent Kaiser, Lonnie Bishop, and Mary Atwell. The Boyls Chorus is something new that was added to the curriculum only last year. The boys are actually a separate organization from that of the Girls' or Mixed Choruses. The number of boys participating in this organization has grown from a few to over thirty-five members. 2-FST?
