The ship was launched on September 16, 1943, christened and sponsored by Mrs. Howard W. Gilmore, widow of the late commander. The submarine tender was placed in commission on May 24, 1944 and in the 24 years since GIL.MORE's commissioning she has seen much and has provided many services. From the first submarine provided for in the Marshall Islands during World War Il, up to and including today, G1I..MORE's performance can best be described as service to the silent service . '
