Commanding Cfficer W. P. Rothamel Commanding Officer Captain William P. Rothamel assumed command of USS HOWARD W. GILMORE AS:16 on 20 Aug- ust 1965. Captain Rothamel is a graduate of Fordham College, New York City, and was com- pp 1 missioned an Ensignein September, 1942. He Leadership immediately entered the Submarine Service and has served aboard the R-14, S-42, S-13, S-20, Marlin, Odax, Greenfish and Bumper. Captain Rothamel is married to the former Elsie V. Pappas, of New York City. They have four children, William, John, Margaret, and Richard. Captain Rothamel and Family reside at the U.S. Naval Station Charleston, South Carolina. Skill Sportsman

Thomas Executive Officer Commander Robert E. Thomas, Executive Of-2 fer of the USS Howard W. Gilmore KAS-165 has attended Central Missouri State College and the University of Notre Dame. He was commisioned an ensign on October 29, 1945. Commander Thomas has participated in mine- sweeping operations in Japan, Korea, China and Bikini. He has also made two United Nations Submarine patrols in 1951 and 1952 during the Korean War. Commander Thomas is a member of Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity and enjoys golf as a favorite hobby. Commander Thomas is married to the former Nancy Anne Deewall of Coronado, California. They have two children, Linda and Julia.
