SHIP ' S ORGANIZATION Under the Commanding Officer and the Executive Officer, the ship is divid- ed into nine departments. Six of these are Command Departments. Three are Staff Departments. The Command Departments are: Operations, Navigation, Deck, Engineering, Repair, and Ordnance Repair. These Departments are normally headed by line officers eligible to exercise command at sea. The Repair Department and the Engineering Department may be headed by officers designated as Engineering Duty Only. The Staff Departments are Supply, Medical and Dental and are headed by officers in the appropriate specialty. The Departments of the ship include within their organizations nineteen divisions. The divisions are headed by Division Officers. These units work to- gether to carry out the assigned mission of the ship. The mission of the ship is to service, repair and furnish supplies for the sub- marines and other units attached to Submarine Squadron FOUR and to other Navy Units as need and opportunity arise. To say that the GILMORE is carrying out its mission isn ' t putting it em- phatically enough, rather it is carrying out its mission in an outstanding manner as is evidenced by the numerous times the efficiency pennant has been flown.
