18 Classics Official Hostesses The rewards for being a Presidential Classic are well worth the stringent requirements and many duti es that each girl per- forms. The benefits include a scholarship for fees, books, room and $50 toward board for those who live in the dorm. For those not living in the dorm, the scholarship covers fees, books, and $100. The scholarship also includes two sets of clothes, one formal and one casual to wear when representing the district; local and state publicity; and the prestige and honor of being a member of this highly select group. This year’s Classics consist of eight young women, six from Big Spring High School and two from Coahoma. They are Sherri Blalack, Debbie Fulcher, Lori Phinney, Sharie Shaw, Jamie Sink, Brenda Trevino, Cathy Weeks, and Beverly Wheeler. Jamie Sink is the group’s only sophomore and returning Classic. Presidential Classics In 1977 Howard College established the Presidential Classics, a scholarship program for the college’s co-ed students. The college was one of the first to establish such a program, and each year between eight and ten young women are selected to represent the college as a Classic. The Classics act as official hostesses at college functions, represent the district at community events, conduct tours of the campus, assist with recruiting and registration for fall and spring semesters, and represent the college at selected out-of-town events. There are several requirements for becoming a member of this prestigious group. The selection is based on both academic and extra-curricular activities. The Classics must maintain at least a ““B’’ average and carry a load of at least 15 hours each semester. A high academic average indicates a strong student whose studies will not suffer as a result of missing a few days because of an out- of-town trip. Each of the young women must have the recommendation of her high school counselor or principal. Gas 8 €Sy a ee a fs “y p84 oe % Beverly Wheeler Sher Blalack
