In 1951 it moved to its present location . The college continues to grow and expand . A new sign was added to the campus this year. A three-year landscaping program was begun . Construction on a new coliseum was begun in January . Student Life 4 Clubs 18 Sports 44 Favorites 74 Academics 88 Classes 110 Advertising 150 Index 158 HOWARD COLLEGE Howard College was founded in 1946 in a hospital . By 1952 it had grown into a college campus with an administration building , classroom building, auditorium, and gymnasium. Today Howard College has expanded even more and has a bright future of growth ahead of it . New landscaping has been planned to beautify the Howard College campus and to ease the parking problem . A new coliseum has been planned to aid the college as well as the community . A sign has also been donated to beautify and identify the campus. All of these new additions are just the beginning of all the improvements to come on the Howard College campus. Many more are planned for the future and these will also expand Howard College. Registration Starts a Busy Year Howard College starts the busy year with registration . During registration old friendships are renewed and new ones are made . Registration marks the starting of college and the beginning of a fruitful year for Howard College students. A) Registration in 1946 was not so complicated as it is today. B) Students line up to have their fees determined . C) Delma Gomez moves into the dormitory. D) Jerry Williams disregards a rule. E) Dormitory life has taken on a new look since 1946. O OO O OO O O O O r Dorm Life, Rules Often Difficult Moving into the dorm is another first for many Howard College students . Dorm life provides a unique atmosphere in which to study , to make friends, and to have fun. The girls ' dormitory has a wide variety of talented students. Musicians , artists , and athletes share their diverse talents. Group sing-songs and parties are some of their activities. Monday night football get- togethers , card tournaments , and a Christmas party are some of the activities planned by the boys ' dorm , comprised mostly of athletes. Fine Arts Dept. Expands The Fine Arts Depanment has grown from the Sour Notes into many different and respected organizations. The Hawk players , the art department and the choral department have all grown in number. A) Sour Notes display talem. B) Jan Cass shows her dramatic talent as a ghost. Howard College has fine men ' s and women ' s basketball teams, volleyball, golf, and rodeo teams. These teams bring unity and a spirit of competition to the campus. B) Pete Rhymes and Randy Schrecengost concentrate on making the score in foosball . C) Howard College students enjoy dance . Science, Technical Courses Offered The vocational programs at Howard College have a rapidly expanding curriculum to pursue several avenues of interest. One of the newest programs is a nine -month course in jewelry. Students as always show great interest in the sciences . Chemistry and biology labs intrigue students as they perform experiments. Executive Management Association Affiliated with the Junior Collegiate DEC A Association , this group is composed of students who hold managerial positions while attending school . The group participates in contests held on area , state , and national levels and raises money through various projects to finance these contest trips. Representatives from different fields of work come and give talks during the year. The future secretaries for a project sponsor the Dean Box Scholarship. Newman Club Sponsored by Mr. David King, a teacher in the social science depanment of Howard College , the Newman Club is designed primarily for Catholic students on campus . However, the club welcomes members of all denominations. The object of the club is to promote spiritual growth , religious responsibility , and the ecumenical spirit. Circle K Circle K , originally designed for the male students on campus, is now co-ed. Among its membership this year are three female students . Lasso Club Lasso Club is designed to bring girls together to have a good time . The Lasso Club jail proved to be the most profitable booth at the Halloween carnival . El Nido Staff members of El Nido prepare the newspaper semi- monthly . The goal of the staff is to prepare a publication which will keep students and faculty in touch with campus activities. The staff journeyed to several press activities during the year, including conventions in Nacogdoches and College Station. Press Club The Press Club is mainly composed of members of the El Nido and Hawk staffs , but it is also open to anyone interested in the field of journalism . The Press Club attends various journalism conventions throughout the year . Phi Theta Kappa The purpose of Phi Theta Kappa , the honorary scholastic society of HC , is to promote recognition of scholarship and to cultivate fellowship among the top ranking students of the junior colleges of the United States . Texas Students Education Association The Texas Student Education Association is composed of HC students preparing for leaching careers. Graduates of this program are eligible to take examinations to become Registered Nurses. Mrs. Lettie Acox serves as head of the Allied Health Division at HC. Several other faculty members are involved with the program. Dr. Coy Little and Mrs. Dorothy Woodard are fulltime instructors. Mrs. Ellen Taylor and Mrs. Gayle Baird serve in part- time positions. Thirty students were to have been admitted to the new program in the spring semester. A) Equipment from the old Malone- Hogan Hospital was moved to HC for use in the R.N. program. Students take 584 hours in academic subjects and have 1,252 hours of clinical experience. Student nurses gain this clinical experience at Cowper, Hall-Bennett, and Malone- Hogan hospitals. Instructors for the program are Johnnie Amos , Ramona Harris, and Annette Miller. The HC program is accredited by the State Board of Vocational Nurse Examiners, and is affiliated with the Texas Educational Agency. When students complete the HC program , they take out applications to take state examinations in Austin. The above pictured students graduate this spring. Hawkettes Go to Nationals In the final year of volleyball competition at Howard College , the Hawkettes completed their season by winning regional competition and advancing to the National meet. At the National competition in Cantonsville , Md . , the Hawkettes advanced from pool play but were defeated by San Antonio , who went on to win the tournament . Two HC players were honored at this competition. Paula Blount was named to the National Junior College Athletic Association ' s Women ' s Second Ail- American Team. Ruth Knight was selected to the first All-Tournament Team at the National Junior College Volleyball Championship tournament. Serving the team as student coach is Jack Himes. He is an active member of the Rodeo Cowboys Association. Himes won the National Intercollegiate Rodeo Association bull riding championship in 1974. The rodeo team members accumulate points for the college when they win, but also keep the money they earn during competition. Members of the team practice constantly. Team members built an arena located west of the Cosden Oil Refinery for their practice sessions and rodeo competition. The National Who ' s Who Foundation determines how many students from each college can be named to Who ' s Who. This is arrived at by the number of students enrolled. Administration members are then called on to nominate students for this honor. These lists are then sent to Dean Anna Smith, who checks for the qualifications of all students nominated. The final list is then sent to the National Foundation for final approval. Students named to Who ' s Who are then notified. They are sent a form from the National Foundation to complete. The form asks questions about the students , to be used for publication in the book the Foundation puts out every year containing students named to Who ' s Who in American Colleges and Universities.
