Ill TIIRY On the twenty ninth of August, nineteen hundred forty three, one of the greatest aggrega txons of future geniuses ever to assemble in one place convened in room 201 of Howard City High School The high mtellectual status of each of us was immediately recognized as our pre dominating characteristic, the fact that most of us gave our birth dates as 1943 was soon over looked On that eventful morning, forty one shming faces looked up into the vahant eyes of the teacher who had been appointed to be our class advlsor Miss Pendleton greeted the entire group with all the geniality for which she is noted. At our first meeting we elected our class officers President, Jim Peck, Vice President, Max1ne Hanson, Secretary, Gretchen Gaffleld Treasurer, Betty Korcal We had just begun to feel partially at ease m our new l1fe, when the Sophomores decld ed we needed imtiating If making fools out of the class as a whole is the purpose, the init 18tl0Il was a complete success In the evening we enjoyed our first social event, the Freshmen Sophomore Hop Fear prevalled throughout the tremblmg Freshman, but we managed to survive After careful conslderatxon we came to the conclusion that there must be a closer con tact between our class and our parents We decided that the best way to strengthen th1s bond was to feed them In February we held our first Famlly Dinner, most parents went home very happy and Jun1or used the car three times the next week! In our Sophomore year, 1944, President Roosevelt and I both ran for re election, we both won through the strength of our political machine Other officers for that year were Gretchen Gaffxeld, V1ce President, Marilyn Crittenden, Secretary., Shirley Motyer, Treasurer Our Sophomore year began with the m1t1atlon of Freshman, followed by the momentous Freshman Sophomore banquet which we gave m their honor C M Scott was our speaker The words wh1ch fell upon the ears of those attendlng w1ll long be remembered The theme of the occas1on was school days of yore in Howard High Later 1n the year we called upon Charhe again QI call him Charlie as he stxll owes us 109 on raffle tickets we have sold so many tlmesj As I was saying we called on Charlie to be Chef at our second annual Famxly Dinner, a.n Ir1sh affair featuring a dish for wh1ch was furn1shed by many famous artists of the entertaxnment world The great dancing quartet composed of George and Margaret Gaffield, Georgena Feller and Chester Crxmmins danced the Irish Jig and brought a tremendous ovation from the audience The Christmas Dance was our next social event The theme for the occasion was Star Dust The song Star Dust has since been selected as our Class song We rounded out a successful year by capturing the intramural basketball championship under the able coaching of Leo Ole Shupe Each year seemmg nearer the end than the last, we set out to make our Junior year a memorable one Fred Jennings was elected president, Jim Shupe, Vice Preszdent, Shirley Motyer, Secret tary, and Maxine Hanson, Treasurer Our second annual Christmas Dance topped the social Calendar for the year Being a httle light hearted at completing our Sophomore year we decorated with all the light heartedness we could afford Candy canes were prevalent, for the more juvenile, you know Our tradxtional Family Dumer came next This time we traveled to Scotland The eve ning's entertainment featured the singing of Harry Lauder MacNaughton and such favorites I L ve A Lassie and A Wee Deoch and Dons Our great potentxal dramat1c abilities became suddenly and violently kinetic in the pro ductlon of 'June Mad starring none other than Frederlck Baxter Jennings and Wava Denton with Anton B Wedal, dubbed Lwerhps, taking on the romantic responsibilities Later m the season the talents of tlus great class were again brought out on the stage through the production of H M S Pxnafore with the Class of '47 represented in many lead1ng roles The cast was headed by Miss Gretchen Gaffield. H M S Pinafore was said to be the most lmpresswe performance ever to appear on the stage of Howard City High School Agam Ole Shupe's basketball team went to the crown in the intramural tourney We rounded off the year with the Jumor Senior Banquet, the like of wh1ch has never been seen The Gay Ninetxes were portrayed, and Bill Falmer as the man on the flying trapeze along with Johnie 'Casey at the Bat Hoyt topped the evening's performance We set sa1l on our final year 1n high school la fact I will be sure of as soon as I get hold of my diplomaj under the command of Maxine Hanson our very able skipper for the ll l . , . 3 ' I . 2 n . u , n Monsieur Le Scott is famous- ------- --- ---------- - stew.
