embr fflf5'f0fy Well, here it is 1955 and the last year for the seniors, and are we glad! But we will miss some of the school fun that we have enjoyed and the classes that we had to Houstonia High. Only three of the senior class started together in l9h3 in the first grade and are completing their twelve years at Houstonia. They are: Lula Belle Baker, Norma Bechtel, and Frank Charles. At the beginning of our freshman year there were fourteen very green freshmen who started at H.H.S. They were Lloyd Shireman, Barbara Reid, Judy Dennis, Joyce Hedgpeth, Lula Belle Baker, Mary Sue Lockney, Mary Tuckwiller, Frank Russell Charles, Tiny Gerlt, Norma Bechtel, Charles Walk, Junior Hedgpeth, DeWayne Carver, and Jimmie Reid. We en- joyed our initiation and the party given by the seniors. During the the first part of the year Barbara Welch returned from California to finish her schooling at Houstonia. This brought the class enrollment te fifteen. The freshman class had a one-act play directed by Mrs. Lee Blackburn called nlt Always Works.u Mr. William Guenther was superin- tendent: Jean Slankard, coach, and Miss Virginia Smith, music and English teacher. In the sophomore year, we gained Jerry Edwards which made our class enrollment 16. During this year we lost Judy Dennis and Junior Hedgpeth. The boys helped win first place in PBCAA softball. The volleyball girls won second place in PBCAA play. Robert Shearer was the coach of the boys team which won second place in the Sub-Regional at Concordia and entered the Regional Tourney at Warrensburg. Lloyd Shireman and Frank Charles were on this squad. Mrs. S, E. Schilb was added to the faculty. In the fall of 1953 we started our junior year with Supt. J. E. Sears, Mrs. Sears, Mrs. Walter Fricke, Jesse Tevis and Mrs. Lee Black- burn as teachers. Dewayne Carver quit school and Mary Sue Lockney left to get married. We won both boys and girls first-place trophies in softball in PBCAA. The girls won second in volleyball at the Warsaw Tournament. The boys followed by winning second at Warsaw and first in the conference tournament at Green Ridge. We had a pie supper to raise money for the junior-senior trip with the aid of our sponsor, Mrs. Sears. On the trip we went to St. Louis to see the Cardinals play Milwaukee. We also saw a show and visited Forest Park. In March we attended the N A I A tournament in Kassas City at the Municipal Audi- toriumo . Our final year started out with thirteen members. During this year we lost one member, Lee Ann Edwards. We elected Jerry Edwards as presidentg Charles Walk as vice-presidentg Tiny Gerlt as secretary: and Barbara Welch as treasurer. Again we won both firsts in softball in the conference. The girls won first place in volleyball at Warsaw while the boys won consolation honors at Nelson Tournament. One of the big thrills was defeating Hughesville on the night Janice Walk was crown Shamrock queen. The basketball boys won second in the PBCAA Tourney, second in the Sub-Regional at Malta Bend, and have entered the Regional at Warrensburg. Mr. Frederick Lovercamp was the coach of both teams and replaced Jesse Tevis as teacher. We have sold greeting cards, candy and cookies, and paid class dues to raise money for a trip which we are looking forward to in the spring. Plans are made for a trip to Kansas City next week to the big basketball tournament. The P. T. A. are planning to give a banquet in honor of the teams on April 1. We have chosen white gowns for the girls and blue gowns for the boys for graduation. Now that our high school career is nearly over, some are looking forward to college, some to homemaking, and some are undecided. Best Wishes.
