Blue ind Si1V0P Depends on how we take it.' --Beck -,.,...1 -,,,..1-1 11.1.1 iil dass Hlkfo y Five members of the senior class started in the first grade at Houstonia. They are Ray Allen Shireman, Judy Blackburn, J. T. Smith, Doris Smith, and Duane Schelp. In the fall of 1950 nineteen very green freshmen started their high school life at H. H. S. They were: Lena Howard, Ray Allen Shireman, Betty Lou Hay- worth, Marion Gregory, Anna Mae Whitehead, Dean Hirst, Duane Schelp, Dorothy Rayl, Doris Smith, J. T. Smith, Anna Jane Butterwick, Betty Jane Walk, Mary Cat- herine Charles, Willis Charles, Lavina Cornine, Carl Odil, Dorothy Dillon, Judy Blackburn, and John Borchers. Of course we were initiated. How many freshmen ever forget that day when they become full fledged members of their high school? Some of the most vivid memories of initiation day were the eggs we carried to each class in a spoon, the gunny sack dresses the girls wore and the dresses and high healed shoes that the boys had to wear. It was lots of fun, and even though we hated to admit it, we enjoyed the day as much as the seniors did. By the time we started our sophomore year, Dean Hirst and Anna Mae White- head had moved away, but Ronald Collister joined us again after attending his freshman year in Sweet Springs. Ronald had graduated from grade school with us so he was no stranger to most of the class. That year our sophomore class put on the play, Gone With the Girls. The author of the play would never have re- cognized his own work, but I guess the audience liked it--they laughed. Betty Jane Walk was elected basketball queen and was crowned by Harold Charles, who was captain of our team. Betty Lou Hayworth and Anna Jane Butterwick attended the spelling contest at Smithton that year, and Anna Jane won third place. Our junior year, brought Wanda Phillips to join our class. She attended her freshman year at Smith Cotton and her sophomore year at Hughesville. Willis Charles was awarded the medal as the best boy school citizen. Lavina Cornine was crowned queen of the all-school carnival by Superintendent Guenther. Also in our junior year, we entertained the junior and senior classes to a three day trip to Lone Oak on the Lake of the Ozarks. There we fished, had boat rides, and watched it rain. Three members of our class made up the typing team which was taken to the contest at the Sedalia Business College. They were Anna Jane Butterwick, Mary Catherine Charles, and Doris Smith. They tied for first place with Cole Camp and Smithton. Some of our class mates, J. T. Smith, Willis Char- les, Ray Allen Shireman, Marion Gregory, and John Borchers were on the Houstonia team that played in the Regional tourney at warrensburg. And here we are, seniors, looking forward to graduation. Eleven of the 17 members of the senior class have earned letters this year. The girls and boys softball teams won first place in the PBCAA Tourney in the fall of our senior year. The basket ball boys won first place in the PBCAA tournament, and second in the Warsaw Invitational Tournament. It has been a busy year with work on The Houstonian and The Shamrock filling our regular schedule fuller. Anna Jane Butterwick and Lavina Cornine have been Houstonian editors, and Wanda Phillips and Betty Jane Walk served faithfully and diligently as annual editors. Several of the group entered the conference music contests. Ronald Collister sang a solo. In April, the seniors presented the only play of the year in the high school auditorium. Plans are being discussed for a short trip in the spring. Anna Jane Butterwick and Doris Smith are the honor students. Cla 17 We, the 195k Seniors of H. H. S., of the city of Houstonia, county of Pettis, and state of Missouri, being of sound mind and memory, do hereby make, publish, and declare this to be our last will and testament. Ray Allen Shireman wills his easy-going ways to Pepper Messer and his seat in stud hall to Jerry Edwards. Doris Smith wills her ability to write shorthand to the following short- hand class and her position as catcher on the softball team to Tiny Gerlt. John Borohers wills his ability to go to sleep during classes to Betty Stephens and his job at the Oasis to one who wants it any . Willis Charles wills his ability to play basketball to Jim Phillips and his flirty ways to Lloyd Hayslip. Anna Jane Butterwiok wills her eagerness to learn to the freshmen and her typing ability to the coming typing class. Wanda Phillips wills her ability of getting a letter a day to all the girls with guys in the service and her neatness to the students at H. H. S. J. T. Smith wills his height to Marlene Carver and his black hair to Bar- bara Reid. Lavina Cornine wills her dark eyebrows to David Harris and her quiet ways to Elma Jane Morris. Marion Gregory wills his sleepy ways to Mary Tuckwiller and his class ring to Norma Bechtel. Mary Catherine Charles wills her ability of arguing with the teachers to Jean Mitchell and her ability to catch a man to Goldie Welch. Betty Lou Hayworth wills her small feet to Lloyd Shlreman and her mischiev- ous ways to Virginia Schondelmeyer. Duane Schelp wills his ability to buy gum for the girls to Jimm Reid and his ability to clean the study hall to Dewayne Carver. Dorothy Rayl wills her volleyball suit to Joyce Charles and her pleasing personality to Vonnle Bratton. Betty Jane Walk wills her short hair to Betty Jo Reid and her old boy- friends to Tootsie Walk. Ronald Collister wills his singing ability to Charlie Walk and his Missouri history book to Mr. Sears. Lena Howard wills her pierced ears to Barbara Reid and her ability to sing to Frances Norfleet. Judy Blackburn wills her shorthand book to anyone who has 85 to pay for it and her ability to always get the car to any lucky fellow. Last, we leave to the juniors all the flying erasers, broken chalk, messy study halls, and torn-up books. We leave to the sophomores our good luck, they'll need it in their remain- ing years. We leave to the freshmen a map of the school building so that they will not get lost or roam about in everybody's way looking for their class rooms. The Class P o fzecy As we loek far into the future, it is now 1965. We see Wanda Phillips, a clerk in the Woolsworth Dime Store in New York City. Coming into the store is the former Mary Charles. She has come to buy something for little August. Just down the street we see the biggest night club in New York City. It is owned and operated by John Borchers. As we come out of John's place, we get into the speediest taxi cab in New York City. It is driven by Anna Jane Butterwick. She takes us, on three wheels, to Yankee Stadium where we see Willis Charles and Dorothy Rayl play- ing in the World Series. Each has hit 65 home runs this season. Now we take a long flight to Texas, on the T W A Airlines. Our steward- ess is Doris Smith. We land at the big Gregory Horse Ranch owned by Marion Gregory. There Lavina Cornine is starred in a rodeo. She is, nThe Lady Rodeo Star of the U. S. A.' While we are there, twenty-two of the Gregory horses get poisoned and are thought to be dead, but Veternarian, Ronald Collister comes to the res- cue. He gives them 'XZZJO8' discovered by the great scientist, Ray Allen Shireman, now working on the K Bomb. Now we get aboard Doris' flight to go to Chicago where we see the great nLady Wrestlern, Lena Howard, in action. Her manager, Speed Smith, tells us that she hasn't lost a fight in ten years. Maybe this is due to Speed's good management. But sltting next to the ring, just in case, is Lena's private physician, Dr. Duane Schelp, and assistant nurse, Judy Blackburn. After we all survive this exciting night, we are invited to attend the lecture given by Betty Hayworth, the ambassador to Zaroostrian. We are being entertained by Betty Jane walk, who has taken Margaret Truman's place, since the last election, as the greatest opera singer of the world. if M Ae?
