The present crisis demands that youth assume adult responsibilities earlier than usual. Heretofore, we were able to rely on the confidences and advice of our parents and teachers. Now we are told that we must depend on our ingenuity in order to succeed. But indeed, we are quite fortunate in having been so thoroughly instructed by teachers of Houston-Woods High School, who in turn have prepared us for the new path we are about to tread. Such things we considered trivial under their care, we now realize are valuableg and we appreciate the guidance given us in order that we may attain success. The new path is by no means incidentalg it's a new venture. It is the main phase of life which determines the road we are able to take to greater heights. The outcome of maturity depends upon the advancement we make now. There are two questions we should ask ourselves at this time. The first is, Have we a purpose? ,' That is, do we have well-formulated objectives toward which we are arduously striving? The other is, Have we freedom? The second one is more easily misunderstood by young people of today. It merely means do we know the rules of the game of life, and do we abide by them? We cannot be free until we recognize the rights of others. Let us, therefore, rigidly examine ourselves and see if we are prepared for adult living. f - V ' Y-'MYW-F 'tLives of great men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time, Footprints, that perhaps another, Sailing o'er life's solemn main, A forlorn and shipwrecked brother, Seeing, shall take heart again. Longfellow, The Psalm of Life Memories may be valued and cherished as our most precious possessions. They may be sources of delight, fascination, and reflection. Memories may also serve as reminders of goals reached, ambitions realized, dreams fulfilled, and pitfalls to be avoided. More importantly, memories may help us chart our present courses, through the recollection of those efforts that have served us well in the past, and may lead us to greater accomplishments in the future. jAanLA for fLe I Onafelltd introduction . inspiring curriculum alma mater administration salute dedication faculty class adviser graduates sophomores trades advertising iff YY V VY gms, ......xn..,....,, --as H Q- - . ,mai -,.,4,,-.,,,,,. ,Q it ' x nrilairing urricu um Let us, then, be up and doing, With a heart for any fate, Still achieving, still pursuing, Learn to labor and to wait. S Longfellow, The Psalm of Lifei' Education is preparation for life. The degree to which an individual is prepared to meet the challenges of life depends upon the kind and quality of training he receives. At Houston-Woods, emphasis is placed on the development of students of character, intelligence, dignity, and purpose through a trade program that strives to meet their needs as individuals, thereby, enabling them to become active, alert, and progressive participants in the world in which they will live, work, and play Skilled fingers, mechanical aptitude, and academic ability are always in demandlby our society. Therefore, we have enhanced these ideals in our goals and end purposes of our trade training. Our efforts toward the realization of these goals and purposes, culminating in graduation, will become the sources of our more realistic and serious MEMORIES of Houston-Woods High School. glttfffg ,l ' T X c fc c L c t CCQC z Wafer We'll always love Dear 181, There are so many friends we have won. Retired-1970 I . WM. gwenclofgn asiioff QOIOQI' I After forty-four years of dedicated teaching, Mrs. Gwendolyn Scott Roper retired from the Baltimore Public School System, February 1, 1970. Every year has been full and rewarding, but my twenty-seven years in vocational education highlight all my experiences, she said enthusiastically. It was quite obvious that these memories brought her pure delight. I Mrs. Roper completed the Dunbar High School, Lynchburg, Virginia. Afterwards, she became a HAMPTONIAN, majoring in home economics. Hampton awarded her a diploma, the Bachelor of Science degree, and the Master 'of Science degree. Further studies were pursued at Mount Saint Agnes College and the University of Maryland. Before coming to Baltimore to teach, Mrs. Roper taught in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, Newport News, Virginia, Hampton Institute, Virginia, and Annapolis, Maryland. Of these assignments, she cherishes the fifteen memorable years she was at' Hampton Institute. Some of her assignments at Hampton were manager of the campus grill, supervisor of students' dining room, clerk and proof reader of the painting department, assistant to the dean of women, and teacher of nutrition in the college home economics department. These areas of her experiences offered opportunity for Mrs. Roper to work with junior and senior high school pupils, adult education classes, and varied community projects. Mrs. Roper came to Baltimore as one of two 'Gfirst full time Negro dietitians appointed in this city. Her assignment was that of dietitian and teacher of institutional cookery to a group of vocational school girls in the cafeteria of Douglass High School, now our Houston-Woods Junior-Senior High School. Personal and Family Living was first introduced into the Baltimore Public Schools, at School No. 453, by Mrs. Roper to girls, in 1958. Later, in 1959, the course was expanded to include boys, in 1960, the course was broadened to include both boys and girls together. Mrs. Roper was cited for this work and other of her contributions and talents during her career. The best rewards from life's experiences, declares Mrs. Roper, come from the best you give to each experience. Therefore, she has lived a full, rewarding life. She is a charter member of the CORNELIAS, a mothers group organized some thirty years ago, member of the Baltimore Chapter, GIRL FRIENDS, INCORPORATED, member of the REVELERS BRIDGE CLUB, charter member of HAMPTON PALS, member of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF FASHION ACCESSORIES AND DESIGNERS, and a soror of ALPHA KAPPA ALPHA SORORITY. I Mrs. Roper enjoys needlework, dress designing, experimental cookery, interior decorating, leather and metal work, as Well asnreading, writing, gardening, and the theater. In response to what she will do in retirement, Mrs. Roper smiled and said, I don't think Iwill have much time for the wheelchair. She plans to complete a cook book and to up-date her five years' study of her Family Life Education in Baltimore, entitled PERSONAL AND FAMILY LIVING: A 'Need in the Education of the Total Child Recognized through a Five Years' Pilot Program at the General,Vocational School, No. 453, l96ll.' The ability to make friends and please patrons are valuable assets. The barber who possesses these qualities has a good chalice for personal advancement. An attempt is made to offer the subject in clear, easily understood language, illustrated with photographs and drawings. The net results produce a better trained barber. use L , .Elf ,t Y, s ff his ssss gk r'VA -sf - f EM :ia ' V- -N V 1 si , r 11 , .',, K .., r,. , ,, 5 M r 5 sa 'A assi? :rife A f swiss Us . .. s. xgis., ,sfg.,g,.,f .r -'is WEE: , v i l, Q Q p 3 a i .
