ine? mo rince l Al 'U' 5 Rose Mary Jennings CSecretaryl Glen Martin Grace Coats fPrincipalD .xgclminizifrafion Our greatest resource is our children. Yet we spend more on intoxicants and tobacco than we do improving the skills and minds of our children. Millions of children in the United States are denied a fair chance to get a basic education. Four million children of school age are not enrolled in any school. Nearly three million over fourteen years of age are illiterate. Over eight million fourteen years of age have less than a fifth grade education. If we believe in the principle that all children are entitled to an equal op- portunity, then it follows that educational opportunities must be improved in poorer states. If we are to indoctrinate our children in democracy and its beliefs, then educational benefits must be made available to all. - We need to build all possible bulwarks against the spread of Communism. We can guarantee equal educational opportunities only through Federal Aid to Education. We need Federal Aid to Education, now. In later years, when we look back on these four years, it will not be with the sadness that we feel now so soon after leaving. We still remember it as the happiest period of our lives, our school days. Remember when we entered High School? We were a promising group of students, even to a tion just Day. But if we were as green as grass and so awed by it all! Our patience was soon put test by the Sophomores when they smeared our faces up with lipstick on Initia- when we were Sophomores we got to do the same thing and it seemed as big a joke on the Freshmen. As Juniors we were in everything that went on, supplying students for the football, basketball, and track teams, the drum corps, cheerleaders, and every other activity. We took a big part in Homecoming and looked forward to just as enjoyable a Senior year. And it has been just that. The Senior candidate was crowned Homecoming Queen, we have had a champion basketball team, the drum corps has won a contest, and the Junior class gave us a wonderful prom and the alumni honored us with a dance at the last of school. And now we the faculty for gratitude for a class of '49 on come to the end of the trail. We wish to give our sincere thanks to their patience. To M . Collins, our class sponsor, we owe a debt of tempering judgment that we know has had much to do with keeping the what we think has been the right trail. 20 b so' 6' G w 3 l As zl A SOPH 5 I XX 'xx 9 x ,- J XV XX f x fQGfX . There's no joy in easy battle No glory in the game That is won without a struggle And in life it is just the same. fl,0fLCJ Houston is one of the few small high schools in South Missouri that is able to, and does, support a football team. Due to the large turn out of players this year and the necessity of adequate equipment, this is a diffi- cult task, as we compete with schools twice our number in enrollment. Nevertheless, the football team of Houston this year has met the enemy and played them so well that we feel we will have an excellent team next year. This was made possible only by the sterling character, courage, effort and noble spirit of our Houston bovs and girls. Brains, speed, guts and size, named in order of their importance, are attributed as the important elements of a truly good football player, and a combination of these is necessary for an excellent football team. Football is a great game, one that calls forth the best there is in every one who hopes for success. Our past season we should be proud of. We didn't win many games but we will have most of our boys left for next year. We showed a mark of pro- gress and development we have reached on the football field. Some of our best will have graduated at the opening of next season. Spencer, Coats, Connelly, Jones, Collins, and Sutton will be gone, but several lettermen will return and with the many others who will come out for spring practice, those who will don the football togs next fall, the next season promises to be one of our greatest in the history of football at Houston. Leading the parade was the Houston Drum Corps and following it were the foot- ball boys, the American Legion, the Senior Class float, the Freshman Class float, the Hobby Club float, the Willow Springs Drum Corps, the American Legion float, the Junior Class float, the Sophomore Class float, the Grade School float, the new Chrys- ler and Plymouth cars from Akins' garage, the F. The Music Club float, with their hill billy musicians and little brown jug, won the second prize of 35. The third prize of 33 went to the Grade School for their float, which was a WSHS Bear in a cage surrounded by HHS Tigers and bearing this inscription Keep 'em in the cage, Tigers! In the game that followed Willow Springs defeated Houston. Several of our regu- lar players were unable to participate in the game because of injuries sustained earlier in the season. At the half Gerald M , ene cKinney, representing the Senior Class, was crowned' Homecoming Queen by Roy Spencer and Don Coats t ' , co-cap ains. A dance was held that night for the students, alumni, and guests. Music was provided by Forest Wasson and his Orchestra. 38 gm.. 1 . C. A. crown to Houston since '42. At the end of the season the Tigers finished with an 18-6 record having won two other non-conference games from Salem and Mansfield and lost four tournament games. The team chose Clyde Evans and Dwaine Brown as their captains. Having a 7-O record Coach Eberhart's boys entered the Springfield Tourna- ment of Champions but lost a close 45-41 game to Noel. Next they entered the S. C. A. Invitational Tournament, and got off to a good start by downing Lick- ing 45-3l but lost an upset game to Mansfield 37-33. By defeating West. Plains 44-28 they wound up in third place. In the picking of the all star team Clyde Evans was made captain of the first team and Lloyd Elmore was chosen to the second one. In the Sub-Regional the Tigers defeated Licking 39-25 and revenged their earlier loss to Mansfield by downing the Lions 39-32. In the game for first place the team lost to Ava 39-35, in overtime, but were qualified to enter the Regional at Lebanon. Clyde Evans was again chosen to captain the all star team and Roy Spencer was chosen to the second team. In the first round of the Regional we drew the strong Buffalo team and lost by a score of 42-26. In the State Tournament at Springfield the Buffalo team was crowned state champion. Janie's death came as a great shook to those who knew her. Although she had been forced to her bed several times, no one believed her condition to be so serious that she should be taken to a hospital. Janie was the type of girl that was liked by everyone. In spite of her frailness she attended school most of the time and kept up with her studies. She was a junior in high school this year and an excellent student, ranking fourth in her class. She took an active part in band, orchestra, drum corps, and was secretary of her class both freshman and sophomore years. She was president of the newly organized Thespian Club her sophomore year, and was attendent to the sophomore homecoming candidate. Janie was a jolly, lovable girl, and willing to make the most of everything. She was greatly missed in Houston this year as she will be in the years to come. 2 in r 4m Janie Moberly Born: March 16, l933 Died: September 5, 1948 W.
