He approved the plans and then began to build his house of brick on a solid foundation. We are all building houses. Whether we build a shack or a brick house depends on us. After examining our capacities and making our plans, we, too, begin to build. Each piece of material we add to our house will strengthen or weaken it. Each habit we add to our character is part of our house. An unregulated, harmful habit is the same as mixin t h - g oo muc sand in the foun- dation. To replace the sanu in the weakened foundation after several years, requ res tremendous effort. The same is true of bad habits that must be changed. Our inate capacities are due to heredity. This we cannot change. The material we use in our building represents our environment. In our schools we have assembled large amounts of equipment and material to be used in build- ing human houses. The type of materials we use is of our choosing. Each lesson mastered is a solid brick. Each unlearned lesson is a blank or weakened spot in the wall. To cover our house, we need a roof that will repell the winds and rains of economic adversities. Vocational training will help to weather the storms of depression. For our capacities, we should be grateful to our parents. For the mate- rial with which we build, we should give the credit to our environment. For the material we use and the type of house we build, we must thank ourselves. ,J45Z2fi9Lfi25?QL4XZ2Zlf Wanda Jean Davis, Secertary goappl of glclucafion Reading from left to right: Duke Hiett, Bill Christie, Dr. Virgil Skaggs, James Brown, C. O. Bennett, C. W. Burk- head, and Mr. Martin. The six men on the left are our Board of Education. Their unselfish service has brought about improvements in all of the school departments. Al- ways acting with the interests of Houston foremost in their minds, these officials deserve much credit. They choose the members of the faculty and administrative officers and give approval to all bills and requisitions. Highest praise is to be given to these public spirited citizens who devote time and talent to the service of the school with- out any thought of remuneration. ix .W fy ,MX RUTH MOBEHLY DONALD SHEEPARD OSCAR COLLINS EFFIE BLICKEN5DER14'1vLR FRANCES NOFBZINGER OPAL MCKINNEY MEREDITH LINAM LELAND SMITH ELLEN MCVAY DOROTHY AKINS GORDON NEV-'MAN gwze 5400! Zi.,,x.x After a lapse of 12 years, Houston again resumed football activities A total of 25 boys came out for the first week of scrim age. The only experienced member of the team was Keith Hibbs, having played on a team in Nevada. Although Houston was inexperienced and having a light line- up they seemed to show up very well in most of their conference games. In their first outing the Tigers journeyed to Thayer. In the first half the team seemed to be clicking because of the way their defense was holding the Thayer team, besides making a touchdown for themselves. The touchdown came after s series of ground plays and finally Bishop snaring a pass from Newman for our initial touchdown for the year. The final score being 19-6. In their second game the Tigers encountered the West Plains Zizzers, the S.C.A. runner-ups. In this game the Tigers defense showed up very well. The final score: 20-0. West Plains was rated 6 T.D. favorite. Houston's worst defeat came when they clashed with ltn. Grove's Panthers, S.C.A. Champions and Ozark Bowl Champions. The score: Mtn. Grove-39. Houston-0. The Tigers were next matched with their traditional rivals, the Cabool Bulldogs. This game was played on a muddy field. Cabool scored two touchdowns in the first half. Houston rallied in the second half with two touchdowns, the first being scored on the 'Statue of Liberty' play, Ross carrying the ball, the next coming after Connolly blocked a Cabool punt and Bullock charged over in the 'pay dirt' on the next play. Cabool overcame the Tigers by the score of 28-13. The best showing of the Tigers came when they played the Willow Springs Bears on our home field. Willow threw Houston to a bad start on the first play of the game by pulling a 'sleeper' which was good for a T.D. Houston then began to click and a series of ground plays and a pass from Newman to Bishop brought the Tigers deep into the Bears' territory. This set Houston up for their initial touchdown, with Ross carrying the ball. Half-time score: 19-6, W.S. favor. The second half was a show of defensive skill on the part of both teams, no score being made. In their last game the Tigers journeyed to Rolla. Houston was favored to win but were defeated by a score of 20-6. The majority of the first team will graduate this year. 10 in all. I ,J f' f49 744 , 4 X29 138 V-V g .Wg I di Z?aaLef6a! Again, the Houston Tigers have accomplished a successful season of Basketball, carrying the Red and Black high. The teams in the conference were closely matched accounting for many tight games witnessed this season. The Tigers, under the leadership of Coach Newman, came through the season winning their share of conference games, participating in three tournaments, winning one, placing third in another. Houston played host to the S.C.A. Tournament this year. The Tigers easily won their first game with Plato, 60-28. Their next tussle showed the Tigers in good form by knocking off Rolla 53-30. Houston then lost to west Plains, tournament champions, 45-26, in the semi-finals. Playing Cabool for third place, Houston streaked to win by a score of 38-22. In the Sub-Regional held at Willow Springs, Houston a showed up brilliantly by winning the first place trophy. During this tournament several of the first string members were unable to play because of sickness. The Tigers first defeated Thayer, 42-20, then the strong Mtn. View team, 47-45. In the championship game, Houston brought defeat to West Plains, who were seeded first place. Both Houston and West Plains were entitled to compete in the Regional held at Lebanon. The Tigers were defeated in the first round at Lebanon by St. James, 28-26. The 'B' Team, under the leadership of student coach, Jim Ross, is also to be commended highly for its showing this season. Second Team players are composed of Freshmen and Sophomore boys. The 'B' Team won a majority of their games and we will be looking for them to really 'bring home the bacon' in the future 5 I X 1 CAV., 'i. NON-CONFERENCE Houston 31 Plato 29 30 Mtn. At the beginning of school, a survey is taken of the home farm by way of questionnaires containing about 50 questions about the home farm and surroundings. Then as soon as possible a visitation program is carried out. In the first year course they are started on a program of economics which is extended through all four years. By the time a student reaches his Junior or senior year, he is carefully considering and planning costs of production. A trip was taken last year to Missouri Un1versity's Agricultural College. This year a trip was planned, as an educational tour, to the Purina Experimental Farm. Ranking first in the projects the students carry out is milk production. Last year's average income of the students was 8llL.37 This years production income is expected to step up at least 501. The F. F. A. carries on a school improvement program of landscaping and gardening, by planting trees and shrubs on the school grounds. A flower bed is being planned extending along the outside of the entire length of the school house lawn. Also being planned is a new cannery behind the farm shop building. Some plans are being considered to convert the old cannery into a hot lunch room.
