OPPORTUNITIES OF HIGH SCHOOL There is a growing appreciation of the opportunities of the modern high high school, not only on the part of the youth, but on the part of the parents and the older people of our state and nation. It has not been very many years ago, when only the parents who wanted their children to go to college were the ones who loyally supported the high school. Many people also thought that only the very bright pupils and those who expected to go to college or enter the professions should attend high school. In other words, high school was looked upon as a school for the special few or more fortunate who would occupy the higher stations of life. This attitude and point of view was changed within the memory and ex- perience of even the present day high school students. Many boys and girls of high school age have heard the values as well as the wrongs of high school dis- cussed, both pro and con, by the adults of their community. But today most of the adults in any community are strong supporters of their local high school and of the high schools throughout our nation. They are convinced that the oppor- tunities of the educational, vocational, social, and recreational development of the youth means much, not only to the boy and girl individually, but to society and to our nation at large. Boys and girls with a high school education today understand more fully than they otherwise would, their place in the social and economic life of to- day and the responsibility that it entails, The dignity of work and the respect for labor in whatever form that con- tributes to the needs and welfare of humanity are taught to the high school students in regular curriculum subjects which develop the realization of the brotherhood of man. In addition to the practical and vocational training that is offered, many fundamental subjects that prepare for the various professions, such as law, medicine, teaching. etc., are likewise given. Every first grade high school has within its curriculum a variety of courses that will prepare any pupil to enter the various colleges and univer- sities for advanced work, Well trained instructors of these high schools advise and counsel the pupils in the subjects offered and in those subjects which would be most profitable to the pupils. But above all these advantages and opportunities there are still greater ones than any named heretofore. They are the studies and instruction that prepare and train the youth for their place in society and their responibility as a citizen in a democracy. lt is this training that will perpetuate the American way of Life and our most cherished Bill of Rights. By Charles E. McCorkle jr.
