Our faith in our homes and our school is the basis of the confidence with which we face the future. v r fv,wo, 4 w X 4 1 HOUSTON BOARD OF EDUCATION The Houston Board of Education consists of 5 sincere, hard working individuals. This group has carried many responsibilities and had fulfilled each to the best of its ability. The members function as a unit, always working in the school's behalf and con- sidering its best interests. The members of the Houston Board of Education are: Jerald Volger, Warren Holeton, presidentg Robert Calloway, Vice-President William Ginn, Clarence Mader, and Earl Helman, clerk. . - - 5 f 1: 3,5 5 - . 4, , if , 1 V :Ed 4 'N' ' L, ,. Muff 4 9, Jim.,-1-w:4+.l' +11 mmmllohll OPPORTUNITIES OF HIGH SCHOOL There is a growing appreciation of the opportunities of the modern high high school, not only on the part of the youth, but on the part of the parents and the older people of our state and nation. It has not been very many years ago, when only the parents who wanted their children to go to college were the ones who loyally supported the high school. Many people also thought that only the very bright pupils and those who expected to go to college or enter the professions should attend high school. In other words, high school was looked upon as a school for the special few or more fortunate who would occupy the higher stations of life. This attitude and point of view was changed within the memory and ex- perience of even the present day high school students. Many boys and girls of high school age have heard the values as well as the wrongs of high school dis- cussed, both pro and con, by the adults of their community. But today most of the adults in any community are strong supporters of their local high school and of the high schools throughout our nation. They are convinced that the oppor- tunities of the educational, vocational, social, and recreational development of the youth means much, not only to the boy and girl individually, but to society and to our nation at large. Boys and girls with a high school education today understand more fully than they otherwise would, their place in the social and economic life of to- day and the responsibility that it entails, The dignity of work and the respect for labor in whatever form that con- tributes to the needs and welfare of humanity are taught to the high school students in regular curriculum subjects which develop the realization of the brotherhood of man. In addition to the practical and vocational training that is offered, many fundamental subjects that prepare for the various professions, such as law, medicine, teaching. etc., are likewise given. Every first grade high school has within its curriculum a variety of courses that will prepare any pupil to enter the various colleges and univer- sities for advanced work, Well trained instructors of these high schools advise and counsel the pupils in the subjects offered and in those subjects which would be most profitable to the pupils. But above all these advantages and opportunities there are still greater ones than any named heretofore. They are the studies and instruction that prepare and train the youth for their place in society and their responibility as a citizen in a democracy. lt is this training that will perpetuate the American way of Life and our most cherished Bill of Rights. We are proud to have eight members of our class completing their entire twelve years here. They are as follows: Clyde Pitsenbarger, Dick Lang Sf01'l. Rdyrnond jess. Carl Moyer, Bill jones, Art Flinn, Dolores Ording, and Betty Copeland. Earl and Virgil Schmidtjoined us the first grade only to leave us eight years later. Paul Counts and john Shaner came when we were in the second grade. Bob Durnell moved into our group in the third year and left us during that summer. He and Lois Shawler joined us in the fifth grade. Mary Ann Forsythe became one of the care-free group in the sixth grade. Lois left in the seventh grade and returned in the eighth. The grades passed by, and finally in September of 1943, we found ourselves in high school. As Freshmen, we gained several pupils, Earl Schmidt, Virgil Schmidt, and Isabell Langston. That year we participated in a magazine contest to raise money for our treasury. Betty Copeland and Charles Phillis were chosen as guests to attend the junior-Senior Banquet. Two class parties were enjoyed by all, During our Sophomore year we were pleased to greet Virgil Kingrey and Ollie lvlumaw into our midst. Again we entered a magazine contest with the Freshrnen as our worthy opponets. That year the honor of being invited to the junior-Senior Banquet went to Shirley Younce and Bill jones. As usual, we enjoyed two class parties, one in the fall and one in the spring. The pupils who represented us in the State Scholorship Tests at Oxford were: Carl Moyer, Lois Shawler, Earl Schmidt, and Betty Copeland. Another school year begun and we were Proud to be jolly juniors. It was then our turn to have a banquet for the Seniors. We honored them on April 24, 1947. We presented our annual class play, One Wild Night, on October 25. As in the two previous years we had two class parties. Those representing us at Oxford were: Lois Shawler, Isabell Langston, Ollie Mumaw, and- Shirley Younce. Now we are nineteen Sophisticated Seniors las the saying goesl. We gave Miriam Meyer our heartiest welcome as she joined us in our last year. Shirley Yohnce left our midst and entered Greenville High School. Our class p1ay, Gnngway for Ghosts, was presented in March, 1948. The Junior- Senior Banquet was given in our honor on April ZZ, l948. Our class has been very well represented in various clubs, organization, and sports. Baccalaureate Services were held on May 16, 1948, and on May 19, 1948, 19 happy, yet sad seniors, graduated from the Houston High School Auditorium. Betty Copeland Art Flinn Y -.sw CLASS POEM Four high school years have passed away, As I write a poem, on this lovely day. Years of work and years of play, Years we greeted our clasrnates each day. It makes us rather sad and blue To think that we must say adieu To the happy times we all recall And to our classmates, one and all, Dolores and Miriam are planning college They'll study hard and acquire much knowledge At playing basketball, Art is fineg With Betty Copeland, he spends his spare time. Mary Ann is a very small lass Her interest is a boy in the Junior Class. Raymond jess is the classroom pest. It's a mystery how he passed his drivers test. Bill, the capable president of our class, Is admired by many a fine young lass. Earl and Virgil S., in their Dodge you see With Paul, Dick, and john for company, Carl Moyer, whose name is stated Goes with a junior, who is often dated. Clyde's motorcycle, to him is best, And at sports, he'll pass any test. Ollie and Isabell, are always together Raining or shining, no matter the weather. Virgil Kingrey is handsome and fair He and Opal make a nice looking pair. Lois has her future completely planned out To be a housewife, without a doubt. Bob, too, has plans for after graduation day, When to the altar, he will wend his way. We have each worked in our quiet way, With the goal in mind--Commencement Day. Our fond memories will not be left behind, But will be kept forever, locked in our minds. F.. we were given a short leave of absence so we decided to go back to Houston and vicinity and try to look up our classmates of class of 1948. We stopped at a farm near Houston where we were met at the door by Art Flinn and Betty Copeland Flinn who were surprised to see us. They told us they had been happily married for nearly eight years. We asked them to help us locate some of our other classmates. Art said Red Durnell was married and working at The French Oil Mill in Piqua. Going out to jones's farm we found Bill working in the field. He was surprised to see us and told us he had be- come an American Farmer three years after he was graduated from Houston. Near HOuSf0n we saw a sign: Pitsenbarger's Repair Shop. Motorcycles Bought and Sold. Stopping at Ording's Service Station we were told that Dolores was a nurse at a Dayton Hospital. We continued our journey to Oran and stoppped at Schmidts. Virgil said he and Dick Langston were running a garage at New Port, and Earl was raising registered Jersey cattle. That evening we paid a visit to Isabell's home. She said she had a job as secretary for a firm in Piqua. While watching lsabell's television set. we saw Paul Counts win the World's Championship Wrestling Match. We read in the local daily paper that Raymond jess had won the 500 mile speedway classic at Indianapolis. Another article surprised us almost as much by stating john Shaner had taken over the management of the Farmers Elevator at Houston. Going on the next day, we stopped in Sidney to see Miriam Meyer, who was teaching dancing lessons. She told us that she had been married for several years. Lois, having heard we were on leave, invited us to a modern type dinner at her home in Dayton. On our way there we stopped at Lockington to see Mary Ann. She told us she was an old maid and was running her dad's dairy. Arriving in Dayton we found that Ollie Mumaw had been invited too. We spent a pleasant evening chatting about old times. We spent the night with our rela- tives in Dayton. The next morning we left in a Strato-Crusiser for our camp in Texas. With us went fond memories and recollections of days spent with our old school- mates at Houston High School.
