Q - I N I X 1 S gr I 5 X .fs bf THE scuool. Q e x - X? 11 X The Houston School .District is the second largest school district in area ,F sg Srixtg of the Shelby County Schools. It has an area of a little over 45 square miles. sgpav 6 ffi is It ranks among the four largest county school districts in enrollment. 5 In 1928, the Houston School was granted a High School Charter by the R State Department of Education. Inl928, a charter for a First Grade High School 5 was granted, which high scholatic rank has been maintained to date. Due to the NS Q well trained and efficient instructors, all of whom have either Bachelor or ig gk I Q X3 Master's Degrees, the High School has received due credit and recognition at g , X ga different times by the State Department of Education. Much credit should be is 1 X given to the local Board of Education and County Board of Education for secur- NS f . E ing the high type of instructors now teaching in the Houston High School. gf 1.63 4' ' Aa' s SS gk h d Since She Houston High School was organized in 1907, it has had sgveral Xi S N un re gra uates. During their school terms they have not only learne more S g 5 - than the three Ria but have participated in other school activities. Many of X i s ig tgem are now occupied as farmers, schoolteachers, housewives, college studmda, 'Q e c. No matter what they desire to be, Houston High has somei S Eg X thing helpful to give them. They must know how to give sound thought and judg- ax . ment to future problems. They must learn not to be misled by shining doors N. S NSS - that lead to darkness. In all, they must prepare today for tomorrow. lxssgpa at 'M ' X One of the things of interest when approaching Houston High School is the SES xx: buildings and school grounds. Even though the High School building is quite m 5 S -, Q few years old, it compares with the best in other counties. E Q The school grounds are among the finest and most beautiful high school 5 gs grounds in the state. In fact, few college grounds have greater possibilities X i s is for beautification, general health, recreational, and athletic activities. The sys Q ge S contour of the grounds makes a natural amphitheater with a running track and , i s S baseball field in the center. Ample playgrounds for the elementary grades are X Q v 5 s I near this athletic field. S X Xf' S - Tix X The high school gymnasium is of average size and meets the minimum re- X X quirements for basketball. The bleachers and stage will accomodate an aud--' S SE S1 g ience of several hundred people. at eb X S When the gymnasium is not in use for health education, physical educatkn, and athletic games, it is often used for visual education, dramatics, or for assemblies and other educational programs. The further possibilities of Houston Schools seem most promising. Due to the large area of dn school district and an increase in the school enrollment it will be very necessary to add additional school facilities in the near fut: SSS ? ure. It is hoped that the architectural plans o thepresent high school build-- SSS ing will be carried out when additional rooms are added, s EES It is well known that the student body and school faculty are endeavoring ,gig more every day to make Houston School one of the outstanding schoglg in the X tate. .eve S --Charles McCorkle, Jr, .
