Four teachers were employed and 42 pupils were enrolled. This year we have seven high school teachers and 80 pupils in the high school. Members of the Board of Education when the new building was built were: Wm. Ginn, Paul Heins, F. L. Gillespie, Arthur Thompson, and Earl Helman. In 1939 and 1940, a new addition was added to the east side of the high school building. This addition was to be used for music and farm shop. . In August 1951, the Houston School was granted a Smith Hughes Vocational Agricultural Department, and G. V. Donnel was employed as teacher. On May 25, 1928, and June 26, 1956, our school purchased more land for the campus, We now have a total of 15 acres and one of-the most beautiful school grounds in the state. I The Houston High School has graduated 255 pupils, a total of 140 girls and 115 boys. The largest graduating class was in 1940, with 12 girls and 12 boys. In 1929, the graduation class was composed of 6 students. There are 14 pupils graduating from Houston High School this year. From these facts it can be seen that the growth and development of the Houston High School has been truly remarkable. --Florence Ginn -2- 455 , I 552555: mi' -, f'- v dwgyww 6 T3 I ' .I fgzgztzspzgz . . We, of HOHSCOH High School, believe we have such a group. In order that the patrons of the Houston School district may voice their desires for the education of their children, they have chosen the following men to represent them: William Ginn,- Clarence Mader, Gerald Vogler, Robert Calloway and Warren HPF if E59 Holeton, who in turn have appointed Earl Helman to act as clerk. Two of these men have served the community as Board member and clerk since the school district was organized. NBilln Ginn has served for six- teen years, and during those years he has made many valuable contributions in ideas and labor toward the progress and betterment of the school. Earl Helman, as clerk, has proved to be a capable financier and recorder of the business of the Board of Education. Clarence Mader has served for eight years, and has proved himself worthy of the trust and confidence which the community has placed in him. Gerald Vogler and Robert Calloway, as new- comers to the Board, have filled their places with integrity and compet- ence. Warren Holeton, although a recent addition to the Board, has been elected to serve as Vice President, a position which he is filling well. In the hands of these Board members rest the administrative duties of the school, the selection of teachers, and together with Mr. Huston, the superintendent, the planning of courses and the many duties that a school this size requires. Houston erintendent, the hands of planning the School is also very fortunate in having Harold Huston, Sup- and Kathryn Griner, Principal, as members of its faculty. In these two capable persons are tasks of arranging the subjects I schedules, and directing the activities of the school. Nola Wehneman -4 - 'WaUk2NN5 9456500 O Q .Q.O gl gzsaiv c5V V . CLASS SONG This Friday morning we'll stroll through the door It'll seem so quiet we'll be here no more We will be leaving our dear friends behind And all the teachers so kind. There will be joys and sorrows As we go on our way You will hear all of us saying We're sorry to leave here today. This Friday morning we'll end our school days Each will be -going his own separate ways Things will be easy for someone like us For in our future we trust. Authors: Jean Gephart , Edith Moyer CLASS PROPHESY While spending a much deserved vacation in New York, after a busy session in my law firm, I was surprised to meet many of my old schoolmates. Upon .ar- riving in Grand Central Station whom should I meet but my old friend MSTY Harp, a telephone operator, who just returned from a vacation in California. As we talked, along came Florence Ginn, who had enrolled in a Fifth Avenue Beauticlous School and was soon to receive her diploma. Just as we were about to leave the station a well-dressed woman came walking toward us and it was, of all people, Jean Gephart, who owned a business firm and did all her own traveling. She related to us that durfng the past year she had traveled twice to Europe and once to Asia. During the next hour we listened to her tell of some experiences she had while abroad. Leaving the station, I boarded a bus for uptown New York. There sat Dick Meeker, who had married a very wealthy society woman.iOf course he Had married for love.J He asked if I had heard that his old pal, Luther Roeth, had been hired as a Professor of Psychology at Harvard University. After the bus arrived at my destination I started site-seeing, and to my amazement I saw Lawrence Rockwell standing in front of the Cocoanut Grove ad- miring a new sign. He told me that he owned and managed this exclusive night spot. I also discovered, to my surprise,,that Mrs. MurphyfPhyll1s Freeland Mrs. Clifford Phillis lLaura Davis! were in New York with their husbands, who had come there on imp rtant business. One evening for recreation I decided to go bowling, and Cecil Phillis, who always enjoyed bowling, owned the Phillls Bowling Alley and held top scor- ing record. While talking over old times Henrietta Huwer walked over and told us she had graduated from a Connecticut Nursing College, but was to supervise a private New York rest home. On the last day of my stay in New York I met Nola Wehneman, who had a few days off from her position in Hollywood as secretary to a famous movie produc- er. She accompanied me to Carnegie Hall and Marie Curl, our class musician, was making her debut as piano soloist. She had studied two years in New York and finally received her big chance. She proved to be a great success. Leaving the Hall we met Bill Mills, who was pitching for the Cincy NReds.n He said he had a few weeks before spring training started. The next morning I left New York feeling happy because I had seen many of my friends and they were all successful. The members of the School Board having charge of the four country schools, H0u5t0H. Dawson, East Jefferson, and West Jefferson met together to formulate the idea that the four districts could be centralized into thenHouston Central School.n Those School Board members were D. W. Williams, Andrew Ginn, William Akin, B. S. Cecil, and J. C. Royon, all of whom are deceased but Mr. Williams. Mr. Williams recalls some instances of the bitter controversy which arose over the idea of losing the country schools and centralizlng all those four districts into one. One aged father of the town remonstrated so veh mently with Mr. Williams about taking away the East Jefferson School which a joined Mr. Williams' side yard, that he one day jokingly replied to the old gentl m , nThe kids are so mean here that they tear the boards off my barnyard gate and cattle are always on the road, so I want the school taken far away.n This argument of course only aggravated the old gentleman's ire and he warned for years that a centralized school would be only NA White Elephant' on hands. The petition to centralize the four districts received sufficient signat- ures to have the new idea placed on the ballot, and at the next election the measure was voted on and passed. The present site was purchased from Mr. Fred Baumbarten and work was begun on a new,four-room school building. In September 1907, the regular session of school was held under the new title of 'Houston Special School.n Mr. W. E. Partington was superintendent and taught all subjects in the High School and the eighth grade. Mr. W. J. Flinn taught the fourth, fifth, and sixth grades. Miss Anna Pauline Lauterbur of Sidney taught the first, second, and third grades. The.first janitor was J. A. Johnston. The pupils were conveyed to school in horse-drawn buses. William Akins, who was the first treasurer of the Board of Education, claimed the distinction of throwing out the first shovel of dirt for the new building which was made according to the architectural plans of C. F. Bowdle. The contractor was H.L. Loudenback. Some interesting figures can be found in the records of T. C. Skillen, the second Treasurer of the Houston Special School District. The first class of the High.School was comprised of thirteen students, but only three graduatedin 19103 Theodore Gaines Flinn,Coilah Williams H1ldebrand,and Ethel Gish Skillen. Those to whom the Houston School has meant so much in life through all the past forty years, and those who have watched the school grow into the present first-class system, might wish to make this last request: Thou, too, sail on O ship of state, Sail on, O system Strong and great Thy followers with all their fears, With all their hopes of future years, Are watching, breathless, at thy fate.
