From Canaan Mountain came the Red Eye Infantry in the Revolutionary War, while Hessian soldiers were im- prisoned in the cellar of Douglas Tavern, built in 1762 . . . Today Canaan Mountain looms over a busy shop- ping district, a dusty magnesium plant, still active limestone quarries, and the lovely octagonal spire of East Canaan's Congregational Church . . .
