This challenging statement attracted my attention the other day and has been constantly in my mind since. As the students of Houlton High School, particularly the class of 1956, face the future, what a compliment they would pay to their parents, school, and community if they could adopt these words as their life motto. As principal and friend of each of you I would like to think that in your years at Houlton High School you had mastered more than subject matterg that you had learned the basic principles of lifeg that each of you will be able to say truthfully: The best is not too much for me to attain. I I To Mrs. Hazel Emery, our class advisor, we, the class of 1956, dedicate this issue of the North Star, as a token of appreciation for the unselfish way in which she has devoted her time and energy in helping to make our senior year a success. ' 7046045 ' I pledge myself to uphold the high purpose of this Society to which I have been elected, striving in every way, by word and deed to make its ideals the ideals of my school and of my life. No honor conferred by the school exceeds that represented by the National Honor Society, stated Principal Keith Thompson. H.H.S. members, chosen not for their scholas- tic ability alone, must exalt the objectives of scholarship, character, leadership, and service. To hold these traits high in their own minds and to induce their classmates to do the same is the purpose of this organization. Our aim shall be to hold before the school such motives as shall encourage others to inspire to scholarly habits, enlisting in worthy service, and leading forward in all things that will advance the welfare of the school, commented Miss Barbara Wilson, advisor. Mrs. Arbo. Ad- xisor. Second row: -I. Elliot. H. Dickinson. j. Bubar, E. Stinson. R. Morrison. This school year Houlton High School organized a debating society with Mrs. Evelyn Arbo as advisor. This organization debated the proposition which reads as follows: Re- solved that governmental subsidies should be granted, according to need, to high school graduates who qualify for additional training. During the year, it was the opportunity of the organization to attend and debate at the University of Maine and in the Bates Debating League. Practice debates were held to prepare the debators for thir initiative participation in these events. February tenth an assembly was held in which a practice debate took place before the entire school. The persons debating at that time were Jeanette Benn and Maralie Arbo, who debated the affirmative and Sandra Sylvester and Robley Morrison who represented the negative side. A Before the debate, each student had the chance to vote for either side of the proposition and after the debate voted again. This was done to determine how many opinions would be changed by the debater's arguments. Zi ,GMA my E 'Q' 1 , 'FMQX NC . 3. QQNW A 'K 5,3 sm sg ,Q Q E I 35 P f -Nr..
