WITH THE PASSAGE OF TIME, TRANSITIONS. THE WORLD WE 2 LIVE IN CHANGES SEASONS. 4 WE CHANGE PLACES, FACES, FRIENDS, DREAMS, GOALS. WITH EACH TRANSITION, OUR SELF AND REFINED AND THE BECOMES MORE CLEARLY DEFINED TRANSITIONS CONTINUE. 8 Fall Leaves Fall Fall leaves fall; die, flowers, away; Lengthen night and shorten day; Every leaf speaks bliss to me Fluttering from the autumn tree. I shall smile when wreaths of snow Blossom where the rose should grow; I shall sing when night's decay Ushers In a drearier day. Emily Bronte Not many people may recognize these faces, or even realize the important jobs they have. The bottom picture is of the school board. These fine people make all the great and powerful decisions in the school system. The members of the school board, clockwise, are; Larry Mill- er, Ron Wiggins, Jan Manley, John Walkley (supt.), El- don Outcher, Rene Crombez, Earl Harrison, Pat Deitrich (supt. sec.), and Norm Pike. Upper left is the superinten- dent, Mr. Walkley. His job isto call off school. He doesn't do that job often. Below Is Mr. Fockler, the assistant superintendent. He handles the school's money. His job is fun. 10 On this page are the people the high school student body comes In contact, and more often, in conflict with every school day. Our beloved principal Mr. Szewczyk is located at bottom left. Next to him is the assistant principal Mr. Zegunis. Above Mr. Szewczyk are the secretaries, Mrs. Cornell and Mrs. Bedell. To the right of the high school secre- taries are the Board Office secretaries, Mrs. Bow- man, Mrs. Goodsell, Mr. Hanneman, and Mrs. Dei- trich. Six of Houghton Lake's teachers are featured on the next two pages. Above left is Mr. Mainprize, a member of the English department. He has been teaching in the Houghton Lake school system for fifteen years, and is a published author of poems and books on education. Mrs. Sheeler, above right, is a teacher in the math department. She has taught at Houghton Lake for three years, and will be com- pleting her masters degree this summer. Below right is Mr. Rigling, the metal shop teacher. He has been teaching at Houghton Lake for fifteen years, and was once the ski coach. 12 Upper left is Mrs. Jansen, a member of the social studies department. She has taught at Houghton Lake High for four years, and is extremely prone to 11 Big Mac attacks.11 Upper right is one of our physical educa- tion teachers, Mrs. Gruenberg. She has taught at Houghton Lake for twelve years, and is often seen walking, since she tries to walk five miles every day. At bottom left is Mr. Drogt, the veteran teacher of Houghton Lake High's present staff. He has taught here for twenty-six years, and is the head of the math department. In past years he has served as football coach and assis- tant basketball coach. The crowning of the 'TS11 Homecoming Queen provided an exciting climax at halftime. Chris Wallington re- ceived the crown from former Queen Michelle Hutson, as her court shared in the momentous occasion. The mem- bers of the Queen's court were Lori Ireland, Lori Bon- jean, Toni Bradley, and Carrie Mott. The members of the court are pictured below, counterclockwise with their es- corts. Below left, members of the court congratulate the queen. 15 SHAKE YOUR GROOVE THING Nervousness comes easy when you're standing out in the middle of the football field In front of your Dad and Mom and all your friends. Penny Woolam is the freshman representative, and her escort is Dave Roberts. Cindy Wyman is the sophomore representative, and her escort Is Rich Blanchard. Denise Black, the junior representative, is escorted by Barney Miller. 16 17 SPIRIT WEEK FREAKS! Spirit Week, October 16-20, was a very enthusiastic week. The students began with their participation in the various dress-up days, including Slave Day, Grub Day, Security Day, and Disneyworld Day. Points were added up each day to determine the class with the most partici- pation. Spirit Week came to an end with the pep assembly on Friday. Representatives from each class competed in such events as the Bike Race and Basket Competition. When all the points were added up, the Seniors received the Spirit Week trophy. 19 Who ever said movies are a drag? From CLOSE EN- COUNTERS to JAWS, and KING KONG to SATRUDAY NIGHT FEVER, the memroies of movies were expressed in each float during the Homecoming parade around the football field. Float competition was judged during the parade, and the winner was announced at the game. The Junior class took fourth place with their float based on the movie CLOSE ENCOUNTERS. The Sophomore float took third place, with SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER as its theme. The Freshman class took second place for their float, using JAWS as their theme. The Senior class won the competition with their float centered around the movie KING KONG. They are helped in their struggle by Rod Martin, an English teacher here for his second year, and Delores Frever, our foreign language instructor. Mike Palm is treasurer and secretary is Robin Wood. Other members are Tricia Spicer, Sally Niwa, Wendy Wassemiller, Jenny Hern, Kevin Kingman, and Theresa Chila. THE BAND The Houghton Lake High School Concert Band has had a full and profitable year. The band performed at many concerts in the new auditorium, and participated in district band festival where it received good ratings. Band members, with the help of the BandAids, launched many fund raising activities and earned enough money to buy recording equipment and take an overnight trip to Grand Valley State College where they par- ticipated in Bandarray 79. The band ended its year by marching in the Memorial Day parade. Members of the band are: Steve Akin, Bryan Cady, Michelle Calkins, Renae Carter, Maryanne Chila, Tammy Chila, Joe Chudzinski, Marilee Cole, Ann Cook, Scott Eckstorm, Jim Ellsworth, Mark Fisk, Renae Folrath, Lori Gardner, Parish Geers, Carl Hallett, LaDonna Hart, Les Helou, Lora Helou, Jim Hose, Kim Kobman, Nancy Kuzimski, Gene LaForge, Ann LaRocque, Laura LaRocque, Jim Leedy, Tom Leedy, Kim Lewis, Janet Marra, Pam Metzler, Mike Milburn, Diane Moore, Eric Moore, Julie Neely, Darla Nelson, Lisa Nielson, Sally Niwa, Neldea Randall, Joanna Reich, Mike Rigling, Don Roth, Gail Schultz, Diane Souder, Dan Span, Bonnie Swan- son, Bryan Thompson, David Thompson, Kelly White, Sandi Wiggins, Penny Woolam, Marlene Woodworth, and Carolyn Wrobel. 58 This has been a good year for the High School choir. Sophomores acted this way during Homecoming. Whenever there is a chance to do something different, they are the first ones to start. They work together the best during pep assemblies when the noise they make is constructive. Their col- lective noise has won them the yelling contest more than any other class. So, although they may seem a little strange, they do have spirit. Sophomore class officers are Patti Wahl, president; Cur- tis Miller, vice president; Mike Nasser, secretary; Sue Samuels, treasurer. The adviso for the sophomores are Mr. Bischoff, Mr. Johnson, and Mr. Mer cer. These men are also the science department. Mr. Johnson and Mr. Bischoff have been here longer than anyone can remem- ber, and Mr. Mercer came a couple years after that. 60 61 More Sophomores Lori Fewless Bill Fick Cindy Fiebig Dan Finn Mark Fisk Karen Gardner Chris Buda Brian Cady Renae Carter Mary Anne Chila Tom Chrispell Steve Christensen Joy Christenson Andy Chudzinski Ann Cook Donna Davis Joe Dove Chris Dornan Jan Drake Terry Dunkel Scott Eckstorm Dan Ellsworth Bill Ensing Jane Fareback ... And More Sophomores The sophomores may be a bit bizarre, but they are the best money makers around. Their dance at Skateland in November was the most successful this year. At Easter they raffled off a human-sized rabbit. By the time they are seniors, they'll be rich. DISCOTHEQUE ONE MORE YEAR JUNIORS The junior class spent the year getting ready to take up where the seniors left off. They did this by egging houses, coming in last in float compe- tition, giving a dance where they lost $3, and other outstanding triumphs. They do have en- thusiasm at whatever they attempt but some- times it is short lived. The juniors are led in their attempts by president Penny Reich. Or as it is more commonly known, the journalism room, is where all the newspaper and yearbook work gets done. It is a place of creativity, hard work, method, and maybe a little madness. But like all zoos it has its oddities. Take for instance Mrs. Warner, pictured opposite. Lynn Warner is our zookeeper. She is also the head of the English department and has taught at Houghton Lake High for three years. The two battling beasts at lower right are our editors. Dawn Roberts and Bryan (Quincy Magoo) Thompson. Dawn concen- trates on yearbook, while Bryan heads our paper, the BOBCAT BALLYHOO. The editors are usually kept inseperate cages, for obvious reasons. Below left is the most dangerous of predatory animals, the photographer. We named ours Eric Moore. 102 Inmates of the zoo are: Bill Fischer, Sheri Hager, Launa Jobin, Kim Kobman, Eric Moore, Lori Mosher, Annette Nasser, Erin O'Connell, Sherry Palm, Lori Phillips, Dawn Roberts, Bryan Thompson, Sandi Wiggins, and Dave Williams. Those are just a few of the many things that the members of the Spanish Club experienced on an otherwise pleasant trip to Mexico. The members of the Spanish Club — Lori Garden- er, Janice Fraelich, Lori Mosher, Stephanie Lipka, Ted Shipp, Kevin Kronner, Roger Raven, Laurie Lowe, Connie Wyckoff, Michelle Guest, Lynne Jagielo, Jack Tyo, Don Reich, and Neldea Randall — accompanied by their chaperones — Mr. and Mrs. Frever and Mr. and Mrs. Niebrzy- dowski — went to Mexico City, Taxco, and Aca- pulco during Easter vacation, April 17-24. To earn money for their trip the Spanish Club spon- sored a paper drive, they sold flowers, and candy canes, and they held the donut sales every morning in the cafeteria. Even though the work was hard and often very time consuming, when the trip was over everyone agreed — IT WAS WORTH IT!!!!!!! 105 The varsity club is advised by Dan Boals, seen above right in his pajamas which double as a baseball coach's uni- form. Valedictorian Jan Hendershott and salutatorian Tom Kuhn spoke briefly before everyone left for parties and celebrations. We that are left behind wish you happiness. 159 June, come and take us out of doors. Out into your world of sunshine, and sandy beaches, golden days and warm evenings. Out into your world, guided by a gentle breeze to your doorstep of flowers and wine. For September shall claim us no more.
