1969 BOBCAT Houghton Lake High School Houghton Lake, Michigan A time to live . . . I A time to live . . . To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven: A time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted; A time to kill, and a time to heal; a time to break down, and a time to build up; A time to weep, and a time to laugh; a time to mourn, and a time to dance; A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together; a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing; A time to gain, and a time to lose; a time to keep, and a time to cast away; A time to rend, and a time to sew; a time to keep silence, and a time to speak; A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war, and a time of peace. --Ecclesiates 3:1-8 TABLE OF CONTENTS Opening----------------------------------------------1 Administration and Faculty--------------------------10 Organizations---------------------------------------20 Underclassmen-------------------------------------- 34 Sports--------------------------------------------- 48 Activities------------------------------------------68 Seniors---------------------------------------------86 Advertising----------------------------------------106 3 Fall: A time to find new things . . . These members have given up many hours of their own time to make this book the best ever presented to the student body. The band is lead by Mr. Milburn. THE SKI CLUB - The action and excite- ment of skiing has become extremely pop- ular at HLHS. Consequently, the Ski Club includes about half the student body. These pictures and the one on the division page represent a typical ski trip. These trips were taken on Thursday nights throughout the winter months. Getting ready for the slopes. Luanne and Nancy take time for a break. 30 VARSITY CLUB - In order THE VARSITY CLUB to become a member of the Varsity Club, a boy must earn a varsity letter in athletics. Every year the members give a tre- mendous amount of their free time to work projects in the community, such as raking leaves, putting in docks, and an annual Fun Night. Proceeds go toward their spring trip, which this year took them to the Smoky Mountains and Gatlinburg, Tennessee. The task of organization is done by their advisor, Mr. Barry Johnson. Do I look like Mr. Rachilla yet?? Hallelujah!! Praise be!! THE WEIGHT-LIFTING CLUB - See John lift. John lifts high. John grunts. See John's muscles. How they grow! John is happy. These students work hard preparing for their future by visiting various hospitals and nurses training schools. FUTURE HOMEMEKERS OF AMERICA - Becoming a house- wife can be quite a chore, especially if you don't know what you're doing. These girls learn the fundamentals of cooking, sewing, cleaning, and other jobs performed by the average housewife by undertaking various jobs at the school, such as providing refreshments for social activities and caring for the concession stand during football season. Giving up much of her time during and after school is Mrs. Pruden, advisor for both clubs. L. to R. - 1 - P. Baker, R. Apps, P. Dutcher, 2 - S. Hamp, L. Hughes, N. Marra, G. -Churchill. 3 - L. Great variety of talent was displayed. First on the program was Linda VonSee, who modeled a ward- robe of her own creation. Next was Debie DeLano, setting a musical mood by playing Softly as I Leave You and Wonderland by Night on the organ. She was followed by Alice in Wonderland, portrayed by Viki Leedy, with charcoal illustrations. Then Cherrie Alton used her years of experience as a cheerleader to present a pom-pom dance routine to the music of The Horse. The fifth contestant was Sue Greenwald, playing a clarinet solo with her own prerecorded accompaniment. Last but not least was Corrine Dove, with her guitar, playing and singing an orginal composition. Each of the girls appeared for a final time in the evening gown competition. The climax of the evening was reached as the judges' decision was announced. The last step toward the beginning of the future ... A time for appreciation ... This page is lovingly dedicated to the Bobcat staff of 1969 at the request of their advisor, Mrs. Gaukel. Many hours of planning and actual work goes into each page of your annual. Your editors, staff members, business manager, and photographer have worked hard to make this one of the finest books I’ve supervised. The Bobcat has increased in size as well as value. Our business manager has done an excellent job of keeping our finances straight. I, personally, would like to thank each mem- ber who has given so generously of his or her time, and to express the appreciation and pride the student body must feel as they receive this publication. We also thank the teachers and administration for their patience and cooperation while we were taking pictures. Last, but not least, our sincere appreciation to Mr. Kenney who gave unselfishly of his time. - Mrs. Gaukel, advisor . . . a time to keep silence, and a time to speak . . . Life is measured by inches. By steps taken one at a time, Not by the height of the peak we seek, But each little rise we ciimb. The span of our life is measured Minute by minute - not years; We live in a very small world of our own In a vast universe of spheres ... 136
