Some changes both in staff and school appearance were made. There were games and dances; voices were hoarse from team rooting and singing. There were brief moments of glory for some of us in sports, scholastic achievement, musical and dramatic productions. All shared the hopeless reality of examinations and deadlines, the semester grades, the noontime cafeteria rush. These impressions are only a few that were packed into this full year. Credit for the production of this book goes to the hard working BOBCAT STAFF and to our professional] photographer, Mr. Arthur Kenney. The Staff, how- ever, has furnished only the outlines of the story that we find when we turn these pages filled with warm smiles of friendship and many happy rec- ollections. The rest is up to the individual. Under- classmen who return to HLHS in the fall will continue to keep up the high standards of the school and strive for improvement. Graduates will go their separate ways using the knowledge they have gained here to reach their successes, It is not today that you will appreciate the BOBCAT Tomorrow, when it is not so easy to think back on 1965, we will treasure the memories this book has stored for us. The following statement will always hold true: Tis pleasant, sure, to see one's name in print. The Superintendent The time has come when, after thirteen : years of school, the Seniors of 1965 have reached a milestone. This milestone is not the same one reached twenty-five years ago. This graduation milestone has re- duced to no more than a ripple. It now is just a slight jolt as a reminder that, for you, there are many more years of edu- cation to come. In fact, it is now be- lieved you will have to re-educate your- self three times during your lifetime. Your future is extremely interesting. Some of the things you will witness and be a part of were considered miracles twenty-five years ago. 1965 Seniors, may I offer you my congratulations, and wish you many, many successes, Donald P. Meyer, Superintendent, The Meyers L. to R.--Dan, Mrs. Meyer, Judy, Karen, Sarah, Mr. Meyer, Eric and Jeanie. The Saxtons | L. to R.--Mr. and Mrs. Saxton, Steven and Brad. NE ee and Principal Speak Time waits on no one. It seems like only yesterday the 1964 Bobcat put in its appearance. Yet here it is one year later and the 1965 yearbook is being distributed as the 1964-65 school year draws rapidly to a close. To be sure time will affect a change and Houghton Lake High School will en- deavor to keep abreast of the changing educational scene. New educational plans will be formulated and carried out, cur- riculum changes will undoubtedly take place, new buildings and new facilities will be added as the need arises, and new faces will replace the familiar ones but nothing will change the content of your '65 Bobcat. May the '65 Bobcat forever serve as a memento of the 1964-65 school year, and here's hoping that school year has been as enjoyable to each of you as it has for anes In closing, I would like to congratulate Mr. Donald Fockler, yearbook advisor; Mardel Vincent, its editor; Mr. Arthur Kenney, professional photographer, and the entire annual staff on a job well done. Something Old to Something New | An improvement that added space as well as good looks was made to the high school library this year. What once was the superintendent's and his secretaries! office space was used to en- large the library. This provides for a more convenient display of books, more room for readers and pleasanter surroundings. Space is an important thing to have in a school. to have the storage space needed for the various sports equipment another change has been made. There is now a direct entrance to the gym from the east and west halls. You can see that the space which was used as a hall- way is now in use as storage room. It is designed to develop basic occupational competencies for subsequent full-time employment in business and industrial occu- pations. As a work-study plan, it combines classroom instruction in school with supervised part-time employment on jobs of a type requiring training. A trainee enrolled in a cooperative program divides this time between school and a part-time paid job, spending approximately half his time in each. His in-school schedule includes a balanced combination of subjects required for graduation and subjects directly related to his job activities. His job time is devoted to performing tasks normally assigned to new workers in the occupation. The trainee's job activities are organized in advance on a written program basis, and his performance and prog- ress on the job are supervised by his employer in cooperation with school co- ordinator. Cooperative training organized in line with the work-study plan described above, Should not be confused with old fashioned, nonsupervised work experience programs. Cooperative training correlates work experiences and school instruction and thus makes the greatest possible use of the school and the community in the development of a sound educational program. STUDENTS IN THE PROGRAM Mardel Vincent--Houghton Lake Resorter Carol Holland--Roscommon State Bank Jere Fourney--Hunt's Rexall Drug Store Carolyn Breyer --Prudenville Br., Rosc. Bk. Claire Keene--First National Bank AIMS AND PURPOSES OF COOPERATIVE TRAINING Cooperative training has as its primary purpose the training of in-school youth for basic competency in specific occupations which fit their abilities, aptitudes, and in- terests. It is an integral part of the regular instructional program which more effectively enables them to bridge the gap between school and full-time employment. Through enrollment in a cooperative training program, a boy or girl is able to con- tinue in high school while at the same time receive training and supervised work ex- perience under actual paid employment conditions. Upon graduation, the trainee is qualified to assume a full-time job with a back- ground of training which will aid and encourage him to advance in his chosen field of work, The aims and purposes of this program may be summarized in terms of potential benefits derived by youth, the local School, the cooperating employer, and the com- munity at large. This Page Is a Memortonv to James Forumer ond) Joluv Good Who Lost Their Lives by Accidental, Drowning JAMES FARMER James Farmer, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lawerence Lynk. He came to Houghton Lake High School, April of 1964 from Emerson High School, Flint. He was born in Sasebo, Japan and came to the United States when he was a year and a half old. He was boating with companions, Tuesday, July 28, when a boat ladder fell over- board and he went down to get it. His companions said they saw him reach the lad- der, but he appeared in trouble so they jumped into the water to help him. The long search prevailed nothing and he was reported drowned on Tuesday, July 28. Rough water impeded the search Wednesday. His body was found Thursday morning. JOHN GOOD John Good, was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Good, of Nester Township, Roscommon County. He was born in Roscommon County January 28, 1947. He entered Houghton Lake High School last fall. John and a brother, LaVerne, were swimming from a boat an estimated 75 feet from shore when the boat drifted away and the victim began struggling in the water. LaVerne tried to rescue the youth, but was unsuccessful. He drowned May 24, 1964. He would have been a senior this year.
