Students Feel Great Loss The death of Miss Vivian Houghton brought grief to the hearts of students, faculty, alumni, family, and friends. She was a wonderful, considerate woman whom every - one admired and respected. She was known and beloved by school children for two generations. School and the education of children was her consuming interest in life and from September, 1936, until June, 1959, she served not only as the principal of the high school; but also as a teacher of commercial subjects, advisor to the staff of the Bob- cat, senior trip sponsor, and athletic director. During her 23-year principalship, she was honored by every departing class; the members presenting her with a gift which she treasured and accepted with appealing modesty. Perhaps the last formal honor to be conferred upon her was that of the 1962 Bobcat, which was dedicated to her. Students thought so highly of her that they always saved time on return visits to look her up and say hello. She was uncomfortable before audiences and about the only such appearance she made during her principalship was at commencement when she presented the class for graduation. But her friends recall that she did not hesitate to talk face to face with students when they had a problem or when correction was needed. Occasions have been cited when husky and rebellious high school boys departed from one of her counselling sessions moved by her sympathic kindness. The fact that Miss Houghton will not again pass this way is saddening. However, she left her mark on hundreds of young lives, the pupils she taught and counseled during 28 years spent in our school system. Thus, in a very real sense, she lives on in our midst. As a teacher and administrator, she was a member of one of the oldest and most honored professions and a credit to it. One of infinite worth, she felt and responded to the urge, all too rare in this self-seeking age, to give. So, in turn, we, the Senior Class of 1964, with great pride and respect, give the 1964 Bobcat to you, Miss Houghton, in your memory. MAY GOD BLESS AND KEEP YOU,
