' CLASS HISTORY Our freshman year started off with a Bang as we were the first class to be initiated in the new school. Dick Roberts, our president, led a class to be proud of as were well represented in sports with Fred Wareing on first team basketball, 3 boys on the second team and 5 girls active on the girls basketball team. Crashing into our Sophomore year, we put the Freshman on the receiving end of initiation. 'Stairway to the Stars was the theme for our very successful talent show. Again our class held high honors in sports. Jim Tyo acted as Sophomore president. We zoomed into our Junior year with Barbara Carrick as president. We chose for our class colors, blue and silver, our flower, red rose, and our motto Do not delay, for the golden moments fly. Our class play, Handle With Care, directed by Mr. Robbins, was a great success and helped our class treasury immensely. Also to help our treasury we sold socks and hose during the year. Mardi Gras was the theme for the spring J-Hop. Our last but not least activity for our Junior year was the Junior-Senior Banquet set to the theme of Starlight, We literally exploded into our Senior year electing Joe Keenan as president. Helen MacDonald did a really wonderful iob as the chairman of homecoming and carnival. Our next activity was the Senior play 'Finders Creepers under the direction of Mr. Herbert Rees. Trying to increase our treasury we sold magazines for six weeks with the girls defeating the boys in the amount of sub- scriptions sold. Our Senior to New York, Washington, and Niagara Falls was fun and interesting as well as educational. The Juniors bid aloha to our class with a delicious meal at the Junior- Senior Banquet. At last came the never-forgotten Baccalaureate, Class night and Commencement exercises. Though we were sorry to leave our high school days, we realized we must all enter our places in the outside world. Compliments of H. B. Junior Class Here we start a new year in school as Juniors, with only one more year of high school to go, not stopping to realize iust how fast the years have flown by. Well to get on, we started out the new school year by appointing our class officers. They are as follows: President- Bill Julian Vice-President - Cheri Rochon Secretary - Sandra Stuck Treasurer - Mary Fouty Student Council - Beverly Akin Next on the agenda for the year was to plan for our float which was to be in the Homecoming parade and to elect a candidate for Homecoming queen and king. For our float we displayed the before and after effects of a float, before and after the parade. The king candidate was Louis Bell and Pat Belill represented our class as the queen candidate. Then our class rings came and for days the first thing any Junior would say to you when they met you in the hall was, 'Hey you nub, take a gander at my class ring. This year one event has led to another and the next big affair was the Sno-Ball, a gala affair when Miss Houghton Lake was crowned for 1954. The queen candidates who represented the Junior class were Sandra Stuck and Ruth Bell. We also have the school paper this year, under the supervision of Mr. Drought. Now we come to the Junior play which was en- titled One Wild Night under the direction of Mrs. Wenig. At the closing of the year we sponsored the annual Junior and Senior Banquet and the Junior and Senior Prom. Summing the year up we have had a very successful year thanks to the supervision given us by our class advisers Mrs. Wenig and Mr. Deter. Sherry Rust was elected Secretary and Don Palm Treasurer. Vera Randall was elected to represent our class at Student Council meetings, Bevery Kapcin was chosen as our reporter for the school paper. Our first proiect of the year was initiating the poor Freshmen on October 9, l953. We can assure you that they didn't forget this for quite some time. Sandra Moore was Mistress of Ceremonies for the evening and Bob Woodward was Master of Ceremonies. Our class made quite a showing at the annual Homecoming by having our float, decorated in geen and white paper napkins, take first place. For this we chose Sheila Hadley as Queen and Jerry Miller for King to represent us at the carnival. We are proud to say the Jerry, our King, won the title 'King ofthe Carnival.' Money making projects for the year consisted of selling Bobcat cushions, a raffle, and of course class dues which were 52.25 for the year. Upon choosing our Sno-Queen candidate we all agreed Sandra Tift was a good choice. We welcomed eight new students this year. Sheila Hadley, Joan Calkins, Mary Jean Brewer, Ronald Bradley, Dick Greenwald, Carol Davey, and Sharon Reimer. 1. .P+ J...-Y 'MQ - W .-,-i +A .. .'.., . ff . fm- Qs., . I Freshmen fl rn. The i953 football season was far from a ioyful season for Coach Johansen or the players, due to the iniuries to key men the team was never up to full strength in the last five games. The team played without the services of Fred Wareing and Joe Keenan the last four games and these stand out Seniors were sorely missed. The squad was made up of mostly underclassmen and hopes for the future seem brighter. The squad will miss the efforts of Fred Wareing, Joe Keenan, Dick Roberts, Jim Tyo, Ken Dees, Devere Hose, Earl Ursal, and Ben Webb. l953 Football Schedule Opponents Houghton Lake West Branch l3 l2 Harrison 6 l8 Roscommon l3 7 Arenac Eastern 0 31 Lake City I8 O Grayling I2 0 Marion l2 0 Varsity Basketball -'TTJJ Left to Right: Jerry Miller, Ronald Binegar, Jim Tyo, Elwood Smith, Robert Lee, Lewis Bell, Earl Ursul, John Malone, Harold Benecke, Rex Carlson, Earl Burley, Tom Akin, Fred Wareing, Dick Hoak, Couch Joe Johansen. North Eastern Michigan Conference Champs All-State - Fred Wareing All-Conference - Fred Wareing, Jim Tyo Captain - Fred Wareing Most Valuable Player - Fred Wareing The l953-54 edition of the Houghton Lake varsity was thought by many to be one of the best if not the best team ever produced by Houghton Lake. ln their first year in the tough North Eastern Michigan Conference they swept through l6 games with only one loss. Fred Wareing left his mark on the record book. His ability and hard work brought him these honors. The first All-Stater to come from this school, All-Conference 3 straight years set a new scoring record of 308 points for the year. The squad will lose 4 Seniors off the squad. They are: Fred Wareing, .lim Tyo, Harold Benecke, and Earl Ursal. ' The Houghton Lake lady Bobcats started out the season this year with six straight victories only to lose their last two games and their chances for a trophy. The teams defeated by the Bobcats this year were Pinconning 4l - 275 Beaverton 40 - ll, Gladwin 37 - 32, Standish 36 - 32, West Branch 34 - 255 and Harrison 33 - 3l. The two losses were to Sterl- ing 39 - 375 and Arenac Eastem 24 - 20. ln six victories the lady Bobcats played two exciting overtimes, one against Gladwin and the other against Harrison. Helen MacDonald led the lady Bobcats with a remarkably good sixteen point average for the year, followed by Barbara Smith with a nine point average. The average number of points scored for game was 35. Coach Lucille Weber was unanimously elected most valuable player while Helen MacDonald was elected Captain for the year. Although Coach Weber was elected 'most valuable player , this year, we had many 'very valuable players. Among these are the five seniors who will, much to our regret, be leaving us this year. These seniors are: Captain Helen MacDonald, the only forward leaving, but as you can tell by her average above the most valuable forward. Guards Barbara Carrick, Margaret Buxton, Phyllis Williams and Francene Beck, who although they have no sixteen point average to show their skill, can share the title of 'very valuable players' with Helen. Barbara, Helen, Margaret, and Phyllis have all been on the team four years, Francene two. Even though we are losing some of our best players, we are sure some more will be coming up to fill the vacancies. We are hoping for and will be trying our best to get another undefeated season ' ' h ood chance!! next year. And with our 'most valuable player Coach Weber behind us we ave a very g ,sf Band The Houghton Lake High School Band, one of the largest organizations in our school, has been under the direction of Donald L. Foust for the past seven years. lt boasts of a fine well balanced 65 piece organization with members eligable from the 7th grade through the l2th. New members trained to fill vacancies in the band start in the 5th grade as beginners. From there they move into the 6th grade band, and then into the Jr. band in the 7th grade. From this Jr. band members are picked to fill vacancies in the High School band. ln all, the instrumental music pro- gram involves nearly l30 school students each year. Our band is a very busy group. The first of the school year is the football games at which the band always puts on a half time show and plays for all pep meetings. During this time also they do much marching and parade work. Following the football season is our Fall Band Concert and shortly after, a Christmas Concert. During basketball season they play for the home games and furnish several half time shows. Then comes the Winter Concert, the solo and ensemble district contest and the band and orchestra district contest. Winners in the district get to take part in State com- petition. To finish out the school year a fine spring concert is presented. To help in the success of the band, our Houghton Lake Bend Parents Association has contributed a great deal, financially and otherwise. The entire community is proud of our band. .lfozi Band '43 Left to Right: Jerry Foust, Eldon Frantz, Pat DuVall, John Malone, Jim Knight, Larry Sutherland ilk? 5'C dif191 Allen Costley, Vera Randall, Eldon Frantz, Larry Sutherland, John Zimmerman.
