Vernon Sullivan has been selected for the dedica- tion of the 1953 Bobcat. Vernon, or “Vernie” as he was called by everyone, was born on Houghton Lake and attended school here until his untimely call to the Great Beyond, July 2, 1950. Friendly, not an enemy in the world, beloved by all, he will graduate with us in spirit if not in person, no doubt wishing us the best of everything - as such was his nature while attending school. oe The Faculty r, LESTER E. CLASS HISTORY The largest Senior Class to graduate from Houghton Lake began its high school career as Freshies not so long ago as everyone remembers. Miss Sco.t and Miss Johnson acted as sponsors. Mary Ellen Bowman led the class as President. Paula Weber was candidate for Sno-Queen (and runner-up for that honor). With “Club 53” we entertained the student body in one of the most unique and candid parties. In our sophomore and junior years we occupied the study hall under the direction of President Rich Carman and faculty advisor Mrs. Wenig. At this time we began “Bobcat” cushion sales. Myrna Wunschel was chosen Sno-Ball Queen over nine other contestants (five of whom were sophomores.) And as juniors we saw Phyllis Sharrow ’52 Sno-Queen (three out of five candidates were from the junior class). Rich Carman and Myrna Wunschel, co-chairmen, headed the fall carnival two years in succession and did a marvelous job. “Clementine,” the class play went over real big (this light comedy starred Paula Weber). A large sum from ticket sales and advertisements helped the treasury. The Junior-Senior Prom, set to the theme of “April in Paris’ was indeed the best ever. Our banquet in honor of the seniors provided one swell turkey dinner. Our choice of class colors was navy blue and white; flower, white rose; motto; “Tonight We Launch, Where Shall We Anchor.” We began our Senior Year (never-to-be-forgotten) with vitality—sold over $1300 in magazine subscriptions (a new record). Ed Netzloff, our class president and Mr. Howe and Miss Houghton, led an all-around class, active in extra-curriculars—sports especially. é “One Mad Night,” our Senior play directed by Mrs. Wenig, was the best comedy mystery in the history of Houghton Lake High School. Joan Britten was chosen ’53 Sno-Queen at the annual Sno-Ball (the large attend- ance approved of the judges decision and Jo was runner-up at the Grayling Winter Festival). A W.P.A. dance was sponsored and additional funds were added to the treasury. The Senior trip to Washington and New York was most exciting and enjoyed immensely by all. The last formal dance in the high school career of our seniors, was the annual J-Hop set to the theme of “The Mardi Gras’ which was enjoyed by all. The Juniors sponsored this dance and also honored us by feeding us a wonderful meal at the Junior- Senior banquet. But best of all were the long awaited Baccalaureate and Commence- ment exercises. The “Class of ’53” wishes the future senior classes of Houghton Lake High School all the success and happiness that we have had. Imogene Lowe was our Sno- Queen candidate. Every Wednesday night that was available the class held dances in the gym. The best dance was the Sophomore Sock Hop. FOOTBALL The 1952 fighting football varsity which finished the season with a won and lost record of 3 and 5 and finished in second place in the Confer- ence, was the smallest team in the history of the school. This light and spirited squad, superbly coached by ‘‘Mike” Bowerman and Assistant Coach “Joe” Johansen, became a serious gridiron threat in this area. The squad was never up to full strength because of frequent injuries. Season’s scores: Opponent H.L. GIRLS BASKETBALL December 3, 1952 started off the Girls Basketball Team with a boom as they rallied over the Marion girls to what was to become an undefeated season. They played eight games, all of which gave the girls much competi- tion. But with the fighting spirit, fine coordination, and support of the stu- dent body, the Lakers came out on top with eight straight victories. The girls wish to express their gratitude to Mrs. Weber for her time, patience, and excellent coaching without which we could not have done so well. May Kemp, Shirley Detmer, Pat Kelly. Six years ago when our Director, Donald L. Foust, came to Houghton Lake, we had a band of 12 pieces. Since then it has grown into a fine 65-piece concert band. It is a source of pride to the school and has done much to put Houghton Lake on the map. The Band Parents Association has done much to boost it, and the community in general is behind the Band and proud of it. At the football games, the Band marches out on the field and gives more zip to the players and creates enthusiasm among the spectators. They play several concerts during the winter and take part in festivals and con- tests. This Spring the Band won I Division rating in the Class C District 9 Contest held at Houghton Lake. This entitled the band to compete in the Class C State Contest held at East Lansing. There were forty-two contesting bands. We came through with a II rating which is excellent for a young band. For this high achievement, the Houghton Lake School received a fine bronze plaque. We are proud of our band.
