SERRA ' ‘ : ‘ : It’s the low down on our one and only Mr. Newell from Betty Bobcat. If you hear a “whistle” or a “plinco” you know that Mr. Newell is very near. He’s our man! He has built us a great reputation in basketball and also in all other sports. Without him it would have been nearly impossible for us to have survived in our happy go-lucky way at H.L.H.S. the past 4 years. So our hat’s off to the best superintendent Hough- ton Lake has ever known. She’s no other than the “woman of her word”, our principal, Miss Houghton. Where Miss Houghton is concerned there’s nothing too accurate or nothing too strict. She applies our golden rules and checks to see that they are enforced. Anytime you'd like to see her just let yourself drift into the hallways when you should be elsewhere. You are sure to find her there. We don’t know what we’d do without her because she’s been here all of her teaching career, 13 years to be exact. a eee, tt el Ras ie ty A Pn wo ‘Zi —” LG ’ dy ex, Fins wy Dat “a es] i imag. ee we A eer . yt dogs ad wi le - ‘ i mo a fox , 4 ee 3 oes SteEaS Comoe: qe nt See chai + Mgnt. First we elected Eldon Ancel, Jennie Ross, Darleen Cornell and x Johnny Bowman as our officers. That year we gave a St. Patrick’s party and held = an auction sale of old clothes. In our Sophomore year we got the bright idea of initiating the Freshmen, which has been carried on ever since. The class officers that year were: Eldon Ancel, Janie Lantz, Dora Jean Patnode, and Joanne Barnes. This leads us into our Junior year, which was full of activities. The J-Hop, with =3 : its Arabian Desert theme, was a great success, as was our class play, “Almost Sum- = mer,” and our Junior-Senior Banquet in the spring. Our leaders that year were: : Rodney Smith, Johnny Bowman, Genevieve Lukasavage and Joanne Barnes. = And now we are Seniors with all the worries of the upper classmen. Our play, “Professor How Could You”, was even more successful than last year’s play. The offi- cers this vear are: President, Paul Shattuck; Vice President, Eleanor Preece; Secre- y tary, Genevieve Lukasavage; Treasurer, Joanne Barnes. Plans are now being made : for the traditional Senior trip, which will cover the territory around Washington D. C. = = June 3rd is the date of graduation. We're all looking forward to success but we are . = E also keeping in mind, “The door to Success is labeled ‘Push’ ”. Bill Bratcher, who gradu- ated at the end of the first semester, also received this high honor. The Conference leadership was shared with Lake City, each team having 6 victories and 2 defeats. These boys went on to win the District Championship, defeating Lake City easily in the finals. In the Regional Tournament at Mt. Pleasant, they drew Saginaw St. Peter and Paul, defending State Champions and undefeated in 46 straight games. The boys played hard, fast basketball but went down fighting by a score of 38 to 28, terminating an exciting, eventful, and successful year on the court. Novi 25... 44 H L. 43__22 Gladwin Jan, 16. H. FOOTBALL The Houghton Lake Bobcats opened their 1947 Football Season by taking, Marion 24 to 7. Jack Wareing paced the team that day. Then came powerful Frankfort, a team whose goal line had not been crossed in the past two seasons. The Green and White, that day, showed why they are called Bobeats. They soundly outplayed Frankfort, but lost, a real heart-breaker, 13 to 6. Big and powerful Evart was next. They had a little too much “Stuff” for the Houghton Lakers and won by a 24 to 6 score. The Bobcats showed amazing comeback the last half and fought Evart to a standstill. The Lakers were on the march just as the whistle blew that ended the game. Roscommon, traditional foe of Houghton Lake, played inside of Roscommon's 30 yard line just about the whole game, but held the Cats to a 0-0 tie. The Lakers traveled to Pinconning for their next game, which was played under the lights. (This was our school’s first football game under lights.) The “Cats” fought very hard, and came home victorious with a 19 to 13 victory. A very gallant goal line stand in the last quarter by the Lakers enabled them to win the ball game. Bill Guern- sey’s kick from behind our own goal line to their 45 yard line put the game in the bag. Lake City was Houghton Lake’s next foe and soundly beat us 32 to 6. The Bob- cats defense and offense were not clicking that day. (Continued on next page.) 1p pA@ AO ASASGIABIE itt FOOTBALL LINE UP Bratcher, Smith, Hengy, Sanderson, Bosley, Guernsey, Langthorn Williams, Knapp, Bratcher, Wareing FOOTBALL (Continued from previous page) It was a cold, rainy, and muddy day when we played West Branch on their field. The West Branch team proved themselves mud horses by trouncing a seemingly spirit- less Green and White team 31 to 0. The last game of the season was played on Armistice day between Houghton Lake and Roscommon. A parade was held prior to the game. Both High School bands showed their “wares”, and looked very nice doing it. The game was played in snow and ice water! Brr! Brr! It started as an easy win for the Bucks as they took an early lead of 18 to 0. The Bobcats fought back and punched a touch-down over to make it 18 to 7. Then with about one minute left to play Tex Bratcher intercepted a short flat pass and ran about 30 yards for a touch- down. The extra point failed, so the game ended in 13 to 13 tie. The team this year didn’t do so well as they were expected to do, but they played their best, and we should all feel very proud of them. 1947 SCHEDULE Houghton Lake 24 Marion 7 Houghton Lake 6 Farnkfort 13 Houghton Lake 6 Evart 24 Houghton Lake 0 Roscommon 0 Houghton Lake 19 Pinconning 13 Houghton Lake 6 Lake City 32 Houghton Lake 0 West Branch 31 Houghton Lake 13 Roscommon 13 Hi He 1 | lit Tea Se 6 Te Pee meme baw eee ew ees 8 ee ee Se se el aie a Se 5 am GIRLS’ BASKETBALL TEAM Ist. row Miss Staebler, Rhodes, Bowman, Pringle, Hildreth, Jackson, Baxter. 2nd. row Howe, Preece, Vaughn, Clark, Gossard, Zollman, Allen ae ‘i - i. ee et NE ee ee a sora lagers ee Pee CHEER LEADERS Sharrow, Bowman, Orum, Kepler, Briggs mos ee ee “ r — 2 en a ae Seas yee ern rn a ere eee ene eon my - — rms eer retro oea Saino a LE a er ee ee Pee gael pe Cheering Section Watch that form! ANNUAL STAFF Through worry, finance, and pages of copy, the Bobcat Staff worked their way, and managed to meet the deadline date in March. In spite of the many trials, produc- tion ran smoothly. This is Houghton Lake High school’s third annual. The Staff has attempted to accurately portray life at Houghton Lake School and make a yearbook of which every- one interested should be proud. It is composed of twenty-seven members, who rep- resent the opinion of the students. It is under the sponsorship of Mr. Newell. Officers were elected at the first meeting. They are: President, Paul Shattuck; Vice President, Joanne Barnes; Secretary and Treasurer; Liz Crunk; and Reporter, Eleanor Preece. Projects of the Council the past year have been the Fall Festival, the Sno-Ball, and selection of cheerleaders. We have also taken charge of the dancing on the stage in the morning and after- noons. The play revolved around a young college professor, Keats Perry, who could be- oe come dean, if he found a wife in three days. Grandpa Perry, John Appleby, Vicky Randolph, and Boggins selected candidates for him and held a contest to see which 4 i lidate would win. Everything got mixed up and Keats found himself engaged to Cane three girls at once. Vicky, the spoiled brat he really loved, was angry with him. All methods were tried to patch up this affair. John appeared as Keats’ wife and Butcher Boy Bean was brought in to protect the interest of his little sister, Tootsie Q At last everything was explained and the final curtain found three marriages in Mrs. Wenig was the director and we believe it was her determination that made this the best play of the year. We also wish to thank the prompters and set managers for arranging the stage for us.
