The climax of all our high school life came on June ll, 1954, when we received our diplomas from Mr. Edwards, exchanged con- gratulations, and thank-yous, left the corridors of the Houghton High School, and became alumni. 19 .41 'qi' p 5 u. yi' 'J ' 'gal 'a 'T W..-1 .r 'A S .9 5 :ga x . - f -- JB I ,Q R bra ' A- 'x ' i Y- Vw 7? 1. Their excellent Work gives them top rating. Only by constant practice, involving many hours, can such precision be reached. Every morning at eight these girls could be seen in the corridor of the second floor swinging their batons to their fancy steps, perfecting the old and trying the new. Under the direction of Mr. Gaffney the cast successfully carried the audience back to the St. Louis of 1904, at the time of the World's Fair. The authentic costumes and fur- nishings added color to the warm family story. Humorous situations resulted when Papa came home and announced to his four daughters that they were moving to New York. The girls were determined not to go and then the fun began. Be- fore the play the cast was introduced to the audience through the use of an old family album by Laura Lindstrom. Salutatory by Janet Morln Mothers and Dads members of the School Board teachers and frlends Welcome to our Class N1ght exerc1ses of l954 Progress IS always hard and slow Over the past twelve years or so we have found how true that statement 1S And progress 15 even harder 1f people have to go ahead on thelr own We are deeply grateful to our teachers and parents for llghtenmg our burdens and clearlng our paths of all obstruct1ons to our edu catlon and happmess In our f1rst years of school we came to class because we had to We d1d not care 1f we could not read or wr1te and could not understand our parents anx1ety for us It was later when we thought of careers that we really apprec1ated our educat1on and worked harder at the subjects wh1ch would help us most In the lower grades our teachers had a hard task mn gett1ng us to do our work 1n school Our parents had an equally d1ff1cult t1me to persuade us to do ou home work and get to school on t1me Later we may have g1ven them a l1ttle co operat1on but the f1rst few years were anx1ous and annoymg ones for every one As we grew older our problems grew School subjects were harder Our relatlonshlps wlth others became more stralned and d1ff1cult Cornpetltlon was keen and we all strove to out do each other But we d1d learn how to get along w1th one another We learned to take cr1t1c1srn although often we felt hum1l1ated We learned to accept other people's 1deas and contr1bute some of our own In other words we learned to work together and we progressed How d1d we do 1t'? How d1d we get th1s far? ' we asked ourselves as we p proached graduatmn It never occurred to us that the parents who pun1shed and w1th homework gave us more help than all of our own efforts to help ourselves We real1ze now that those t1mes we were annoyed at our parents and teachers we should have been deeply grateful By help1ng us they taught us to help ourselves One of the greatest g1fts our parents gave us was our c1t1zensh1p Only 1n a free country l1ke Arner1ca could we get the broad and unblased educat1onwe have Only 1n afree country are one 1nd1v1dual's 1deas as good as another s Amer1ca g1ves us 1n1t1at1ve We could not carry out our var1ed plans for the future 1f we knew all our efforts would be IH vaxn and all our prof1ts would go to the State It was our government that gave us the rlght to learn our government that gave us laws for our protect1on our government that gave us the freedom to ask for help and guldance from God And God? What could we have done w1thout HITU7 Who gulded our parents 1n guxdmg us? To Whom d1d we turn for sp1r1tual help when no one else would ad v1se us'7 Who gave us courage when we were dlscouraged fa1th and 1deals'? Certalnly among those who have a1ded us we must acknowledge and thank God Th1nk1ng on all of these thlngs fllls us w1th hum1l1ty There 15 no way we can fully repay our parents and teachers unless It 1S by graduat1ng from th1s school and by bemg good c1t1zens of our commumty From th1s day forward may we progress as we have done 1n the past On behalf of the Sen1or Class of 1954 I want to say 'Thank you to all of y and 'Welcorne to our program 77 'I . 1 l . . .
