BASKETBALL First Row-Peterson, Caspary, Schorgi. Hobba. VViitanen, XVisti, Ayoub, Lenz, Second Row-Chaput, LaBissonie1'e, Gaffney, Rourke. Short, VVright, Race, Trathen, Swenson. Third Row-Tredray, Young, Knight, Peterson, Lehti, Nancarrow, Tretheway, Donnelly, Hornick, Mr. Bugrni, C. Mattson, R. Mattson. Our cage team came through the 1939-40 basketball season very successfully. Out of fourteen games the team was victorious in twelve. The two defeats were handed to Houghton by the strong L'Anse quintet. Houghton shared Conference honors with L'AnSe. The team as a whole was well rounded, each player having plenty of scoring punch and ability in ball handling. Herbie Schorg was lost to the team when he completed his four-year course in February. Ayoub and Caspary alternately filled the Vacant position. The 1940 class B district tournament was held in the school gymnasium for the first time in the history of the Houshton High School. Hanc0ck's Crimson and Gold nosed out Houghtorfs Orange and Black by a 17-16 score to win the tournament. Melvin XYiitanen, one of Houghton's scoring' aces, was chosen as a guard and also as captain of the All-Tournament team. y Houghton placed one player on each of the three Conference All-Star teams. Co-Captain XViitanen was chosen on the Hrst team, Co-Captain Hobba was chosen as cap- tain of the second team, and NVisti was chosen on the third team. Seniors lost by graduation are: Hubba, Schorg, VVisti, Caspary, Ayoub, Lenz, and Peterson.

The notivealrle shortage of vivtories this season was due largely to a small squad and injuries to players whose presenee meant much to the team. Out of 1' total of nine games. the team encountered seven setlmac-ks. The remaining two games ended in a 7-7 tie with Haneoek and 1- lil-03 victory over the Ontonagon Polar Bears. During' the season. the team traveled to Marinette, XVisconsin. where they played a niprht game with the strong' Marinette Hiprh St-hool eleven. Although the Hougrhtonites were defeated lay a 32-tl sc-ore, the boys gave all they had. Houg:hton's team had the disad- vantage of being outweighed. Bill Peltier was selet-ted as right taelile on the Popper Country All-Star eleven. Hank Hohlra. an eo-vaptain ot' the Houghton eleven. was Chosen as a halflmaek and hon- orary captain on the All-Star second team. TRACK The 1940 trac-k team was lluilt around a small number of last year's veterans. Ilolmlva was the only letterman who returned. Three meets were held this year. On May 3, an inter-school meet was held be- tween two teams captained hy lVisti and Peterson respectively. May 18 was the date of the llistriet meet and on May 34 the season 1-losed with the Regional meet. Among' the members were: Holmha, Vt'iitanen, Swenson. Tretheway, Marver, Nan- carrow, Short, lluelle. Ilehti, Knight, C, Mattson, Donnelly, XV. Swenson, Montgomery, XVisti, Peterson, Vest, P. Lenz, Horniek. Smith, R. Mrs. George Swen- son read the second act of the play, The Klng's Henchmen, by Dorothy Canfield. Mrs. Melvin Jose of the Audrey Beauty Salon gave the girls an interesting talk on Personal Grooming. Mrs. W. G. Rice presented an interesting account of her trip to the Child Welfare Conference ln Washington, D. C. A large delegation of the club members attended the Older Girls' Conference at Hancock in April. The club sponsored Miss Hutzel of the State Department of Health. M ary Datson The highlights of the year's activities were as follows: Election of officers, indi- vidual group meetings at Miss Siewert's cottage, eleventh and twelfth grade basketball games, gymnasium party, home room programs in the auditorium, and the play, The Awful Letter. The girls had a very enjoyable year under the leadership of Miss Slewert and Miss Kennedy.
