Robert O. Ferm, A.M., Th.M., Dean of Students Alice Allen, Secretary Viola Blake, A.b., Dean of Women Elizabeth l. Rennick, Assistant Dean of Women iq . i Dear Seniors, On the Houghton College seal are found the words, Fiat Lux . Often I sat in chapel as a student and lknowing no Latinl wondered what these words meant. Then one time while reading the scriptures, l found the words in the book of Genesis. The words meant Let there be light. Then l realized what the founders of Houghton had envisioned. They had built and dedi- cated a school that would cooperate with God. God desired light for the dark places that the ignorance and spiritual blindness of men might be done away with. The Bible is sometimes likened to light. Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my pathway tells us what the Psalmist discovered. So Houghton has discovered for herself and for all who pass through her halls and classrooms that the true light of life is to be found in the Word of God. To be trained intel- lectually alone is to be denied the full light. Only when the highest scholarship is joined to spiritual insight do we have light. The accumulation of information is not enough, for we must have understanding. At Houghton, the Word of God is upheld like a lamp to shed light on the perplexities of life. lf we walk in the light as He is in the light we have fellow- ship one with another, and the Blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sin. ln His Name, Robert O. Ferm 21

Arthur W. Lynip, A.M., Ph.D. Dean of the College Jean Seyler, A.B., Secretary Claude A. Ries, A.M., B.D., Th.D., Dear Seniors, Vice-President Somewhat awed by the enormous destructive pow- ers now in his hands, man has turned to a kind of rec- ognition of God. How long this will continue is not given to us to know, but both Scripture and common sense tell us that this intermediate period of awe will be short-lived. ln its place is likely to emerge a boastful self-confidence and an optimism: man is really getting better and finally learning how to manage himself. This is no doubt God's plan for him after all. The Scripture says that there will surely be a falling away as the end times approach. lt is in the power of the trained Christian leader to discern between the pseudo-Christian atmosphere: The modernist, the neo-orthodox, the extremist of any school-and the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ re- vealed clearly and unequivocally in His Word. We pray that you may have the ability to discern and that you will choose His Way and, choosing that, you will be willing even to die for that faith. For it is in the power of God that you will triumph even over death through our Lord Jesus Christ. Having fixed your position for the defense of the gospel we trust that you will remember us that this school continue to be a place where Christ is honored in all that we think, say or do. Yours, ni His Service Arthur W. Lynip 20
