center: Stephen W. Paine, A.M., Ph.D., LL D., President. left: Edward T. Burton, Assistant to the President. right: Helen Hubbard, A.B., Secretary. ALL POWER The writer of Hebrews refers to Christ as Upholding all things by the word of his power. The big diesel locomotive is the life of a transcontinental streamliner. From that engine comes the heat and the light which make the train comfortable, convenient, and cheerful. From the engine comes the energy to move the thousands of tons of heavy cars with speed toward a desired destination. A train without a power unit is a dead train. Men have thought of the sun as the locomotive of the solar system, supplying us directly or indirectly with practically all of our heat, light, and power. With the intense storms of atomic combustion, causing flames which leap thousands of miles from its surface, it con- tinues to disperse heat which, even though decreasing tremendously in its effect as it travels out, is for us-at 93,000,000 miles remoteness-a factor without which we could not live. But who put the energy into the sun? And into the thousands of suns which we can ob- serve? Energy cannot come from nowhere. The Bible tells us that it was God in the person of the Son who did so with His creative word. And the reference in Hebrews adds the thought that God the Son also upholds and maintains them with His word of power and authority. This is a sobering thought for us all, and it brings ioy to those who are willingly aligning their 'lives and wills with that of our Savior. To us there is wonderful assurance in Christ's words, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Likewise there is tremendous compulsion in His accompanying command, Go ye into all the world. And there is won- derful exaltation in the coupled promise, And lo, I am with you alway. What the locomotive is to the train, what the sun is to its planets, all this and much more is Christ to His own. Stephen W. Paine l9
