Luke 22:10 As dihierent men in the college's history helped it to enlarge, so his infiuence was there. As his vision grew, Houghton grew. As needs were presented, his drive helped meet them. No understanding is too great, no task too menial. We are inspired by Dr. Smith's zest for living, cheered by his sense of humor, encouraged by his vital interest in people, strengthened by his faith in God. And there is no rest for him, whether we observe him driving a tractor, teaching a class, working early in the morning, or directing singing in church. We are grateful for a man who, strengthened by God, is giving so much. To you, Dr. Willard Smith, Business Manager of Houghton College, we dedicate the I956 Boulder. 4 Jaw' Page 7 Page I6 Page 34 Page 84 Page 122 I believe in the might of design and the mystery of color. campus views administration students activities athletics shaw 'X iw n A 'R Wk? 1 3 f f f Q , 4 --., -wr ff li ,gia- K .y If-V J' X f J 'qu MN ' 3 . 2 'I iiw' 4 tv uv-4' Q-Q-wY1 ' ..-u E E .- -. nf' me 7, Aki 1-.fx M 4, 'JM f 'N, 3g H 12544, Q f 1 x,f if 4f ,f I P 5--.1 'Af '. l,g,s,:' ,I -Y 5533 'IF J' Gaoycsdeo Hczll Old Administration and Science Buildings Bedford Gymnasium Luckey Memorial Building IN- 1 x Wifi:- v ' East Hull Q5 Q H ? The big diesel locomotive is the life of a transcontinental streamliner. From that engine comes the heat and the light which make the train comfortable, convenient, and cheerful. From the engine comes the energy to move the thousands of tons of heavy cars with speed toward a desired destination. A train without a power unit is a dead train. Men have thought of the sun as the locomotive of the solar system, supplying us directly or indirectly with practically all of our heat, light, and power. With the intense storms of atomic combustion, causing flames which leap thousands of miles from its surface, it con- tinues to disperse heat which, even though decreasing tremendously in its effect as it travels out, is for us-at 93,000,000 miles remoteness-a factor without which we could not live. But who put the energy into the sun? And into the thousands of suns which we can ob- serve? Energy cannot come from nowhere. The Bible tells us that it was God in the person of the Son who did so with His creative word. And the reference in Hebrews adds the thought that God the Son also upholds and maintains them with His word of power and authority. This is a sobering thought for us all, and it brings ioy to those who are willingly aligning their 'lives and wills with that of our Savior. To us there is wonderful assurance in Christ's words, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Likewise there is tremendous compulsion in His accompanying command, Go ye into all the world. And there is won- derful exaltation in the coupled promise, And lo, I am with you alway. What the locomotive is to the train, what the sun is to its planets, all this and much more is Christ to His own. Stephen W. Paine l9 Arthur W. Lynip, A.M., Ph.D. Dean of the College Jean Seyler, A.B., Secretary Claude A. Ries, A.M., B.D., Th.D., Dear Seniors, Vice-President Somewhat awed by the enormous destructive pow- ers now in his hands, man has turned to a kind of rec- ognition of God. How long this will continue is not given to us to know, but both Scripture and common sense tell us that this intermediate period of awe will be short-lived. ln its place is likely to emerge a boastful self-confidence and an optimism: man is really getting better and finally learning how to manage himself. This is no doubt God's plan for him after all. The Scripture says that there will surely be a falling away as the end times approach. lt is in the power of the trained Christian leader to discern between the pseudo-Christian atmosphere: The modernist, the neo-orthodox, the extremist of any school-and the faith of the Lord Jesus Christ re- vealed clearly and unequivocally in His Word. We pray that you may have the ability to discern and that you will choose His Way and, choosing that, you will be willing even to die for that faith. For it is in the power of God that you will triumph even over death through our Lord Jesus Christ. Having fixed your position for the defense of the gospel we trust that you will remember us that this school continue to be a place where Christ is honored in all that we think, say or do. Yours, ni His Service Arthur W. Lynip 20 Robert O. Ferm, A.M., Th.M., Dean of Students Alice Allen, Secretary Viola Blake, A.b., Dean of Women Elizabeth l. Rennick, Assistant Dean of Women iq . i Dear Seniors, On the Houghton College seal are found the words, Fiat Lux . Often I sat in chapel as a student and lknowing no Latinl wondered what these words meant. Then one time while reading the scriptures, l found the words in the book of Genesis. The words meant Let there be light. Then l realized what the founders of Houghton had envisioned. They had built and dedi- cated a school that would cooperate with God. God desired light for the dark places that the ignorance and spiritual blindness of men might be done away with. The Bible is sometimes likened to light. Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my pathway tells us what the Psalmist discovered. So Houghton has discovered for herself and for all who pass through her halls and classrooms that the true light of life is to be found in the Word of God. To be trained intel- lectually alone is to be denied the full light. Only when the highest scholarship is joined to spiritual insight do we have light. The accumulation of information is not enough, for we must have understanding. At Houghton, the Word of God is upheld like a lamp to shed light on the perplexities of life. lf we walk in the light as He is in the light we have fellow- ship one with another, and the Blood of Jesus Christ cleanseth us from all sin. ln His Name, Robert O. H - - M- . knowledge is power bacon Marge Paine, oldest daughter of President Stephen Paine, would have graduated with the class of I956. This letter appeared anonymously in the March 25, l955 issue of the 'Star'. Marge passed away March I9, l955, following a prolonged illness. Dear Marge, It may seem strange that I am writing to you because I have never met you. However, in spite of this, I feel that I know you very well. I became acquainted with you, as did many of us here at Houghton, through your life. I first heard of you when I received my first assignment sheet from the Star. It said simply: Assignment: Marge Paine Comes Home Weekends. Marge has been a polio victim for almost a year and is now suffi- ciently recovered to visit her home on weekends. Word Limit: 75 words. The story I got from your father's secretary, whom I interviewed, was not one that could be limited to a mere seventy-five words. I read with dissatisfaction my finished story which contained a few hard, cold facts and which told nothing of the inch-by-inch struggle for recovery of a brave girl who was stricken with polio in the middle of her college career. I first saw you during homecoming weekend a few weeks later. It was the afternoon of the big ome- coming parade. Crowds were standing around everywhere waiting for the parade to begin, ut I was not watching the crowds or the fioats in the parade. My eyes were fastened on a girl in wheelchair sitting along the sidelines. She was thin, unbearably thin, but her large eyes peered ev ywhere, seeing everything, and her lips were parted in a warm, friendly smile as she spoke to gir who had been her classmates. My heart went out to you then, Marge, and I wanted to go over an alk to you, but I didn't because I thought you might feel that I was curious, or worse, that I pitied u. I didn't hear too much about you during the winter, but you were co antly in my prayers. About a month ago, I read with avid interest that you had been editor of the G per's Gazette, a newspaper pub- lished by polio victims. I also learned that you were taking severa courses in order to finish your college education although you could hardly turn the pages of a book f r yourself. These to me seemed to be sure signs that you were on the road to recovery. When you came home to stay shortly after that, I felt ertain my prayers had been answered and that in time you would be able to live a normal life a in. However, I was to discover that God had other plans for you. This morning in Sunday School I learned t t God had taken you home to be with Him last night. At first, I was shocked and could only won r, Why, Lord, why? Slowly, as I pondered the seeming in- iustice of your sudden death, I realize that it was His will-that now you were free from the pain which had been burdening you for over year, that you were with your Heavenly Father for whom you had lived so nobly on earth. I coul 't feel sad anymore, Marge, I could only envy you. I'm looking forward to eeting you in heaven, and I'm happy that I knew you on earth. Lovingly, 36 A friend in Christ FIB 90 In 4 rx 5 ni lf!!
