i So run, that ye may obtainv I con. 9:24 College is generally associated with athletics, but after all, while bodily exercise profiteth a little, godliness is profitable unto all things. The Christian college is a fit place of training and performance for the Christian athlete. Training involves discipline willingly accepted, self mastery. Jesus, our great captain, denied Himself, He endured hardness. We His learners are to do the same. Paul said, I buffet my body and bring it into subjection. This implies carefulness and circumspection of life, a minding of the rules of the gamef' Ifa man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned except he strive lawfullyf, The Christian athlete majors on consistence and faithfulness rather than on brilliance and spurt He runs with patieneeu for the race of life is long. The Christian athlete runs with precision. Like the runners in an Olympic contest, each seeks the lane assigned specifically to him. We must run the race that is set before us.', And so in college days the Christian student, as he goes forward in preparation, looks to the Master of the race, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?', The Christian athlete runs in the strength and in the faith of his Captain. Christ the beginning, Christ the goal, Looking unto Jesus, the author and the finisher of our faith. Stephen W. Paine, A.M., Ph.D., LL.D. President Helen Hubbard, A.B. Secretary 10

Dear Class of '55: The world challenges the Christian: Can you demonstrate that God has any par- ticular interest in you? Some have answered: We can safely assume that God is interested in good. VVe shall therefore occupy ourselves in doing good and leave the rest with Him. The evangelical answers: No one can really do good-at least not consistently nor long-without the personal and supernatural assistance of God. One begins with God, through Christ, and is led out to do goodf' Figuratively speaking, as you graduate, you enter a stadium where a great contest is to be presented. He who runs his race inspired only by his own spirit and stamina, though he may be strong and possess great determination, will come to the moment when he breaks stride, falters, and fails. But we are convinced of better things pertaining to you: That you have learned the meaning of His promise of renewed strength for those that wait on the Lord, that you are partakers of His training, of His disciplines, of His careg and that you have a proper confidence that the outcome of your race is certain victory, by His grace. Your righteous lives, the victory, will constitute irrefutable proof that God is with you. This proof will be an invitation of hope to those now without hope. And you will receive the end of your faith, everlasting life. Our prayers go with you. We have faith in you for you have faith in Him. Arthur VV. Lynip, A.M., Ph.D. Dean of the College 12
