V Boul -aswiiw f '+ii'2,. FOREWORD The seniors are racing down the final straightawayvmuscles tense, studies heavy, eyes straight toward the finish line. The nearest competitor, the junior class, is one year behind. Many friends are cheering alongside the track. Soon the seniors will break the tape and the class of '55 will be alumni of Houghton College. Four years ago these seniors decided to try out for college. Day after day the Coaches gave out training rulesg because these were followed, the seniors are vic- tors. Many of them felt the need of Conditioning in order to run a good race, while others depended somewhat on the Sidelines. In a few weeks the varsity squad will receive their letters. They would advise the other Contestants, so run that ye may obtainf, The race here at Houghton has been a practice race for the championship race of life. As the seniors follow the training rules of THE COACH, as set forth in His word, they will be also in life's race more than conquerorsf' To the CONQUERORS, we present the 1955 BOULDER. 4 NT Page Page Page Page Page ENT COACHES CONQUERORS CONTESTANTS SIDELINES CONDITIONING 5 s L fx, ,.. The Christian college is a fit place of training and performance for the Christian athlete. Training involves discipline willingly accepted, self mastery. Jesus, our great captain, denied Himself, He endured hardness. We His learners are to do the same. Paul said, I buffet my body and bring it into subjection. This implies carefulness and circumspection of life, a minding of the rules of the gamef' Ifa man also strive for masteries, yet is he not crowned except he strive lawfullyf, The Christian athlete majors on consistence and faithfulness rather than on brilliance and spurt He runs with patieneeu for the race of life is long. The Christian athlete runs with precision. Like the runners in an Olympic contest, each seeks the lane assigned specifically to him. We must run the race that is set before us.', And so in college days the Christian student, as he goes forward in preparation, looks to the Master of the race, Lord, what wilt thou have me to do?', The Christian athlete runs in the strength and in the faith of his Captain. Christ the beginning, Christ the goal, Looking unto Jesus, the author and the finisher of our faith. Stephen W. Paine, A.M., Ph.D., LL.D. President Helen Hubbard, A.B. Secretary 10 11 Dear Class of '55: The world challenges the Christian: Can you demonstrate that God has any par- ticular interest in you? Some have answered: We can safely assume that God is interested in good. VVe shall therefore occupy ourselves in doing good and leave the rest with Him. The evangelical answers: No one can really do good-at least not consistently nor long-without the personal and supernatural assistance of God. One begins with God, through Christ, and is led out to do goodf' Figuratively speaking, as you graduate, you enter a stadium where a great contest is to be presented. He who runs his race inspired only by his own spirit and stamina, though he may be strong and possess great determination, will come to the moment when he breaks stride, falters, and fails. But we are convinced of better things pertaining to you: That you have learned the meaning of His promise of renewed strength for those that wait on the Lord, that you are partakers of His training, of His disciplines, of His careg and that you have a proper confidence that the outcome of your race is certain victory, by His grace. Your righteous lives, the victory, will constitute irrefutable proof that God is with you. This proof will be an invitation of hope to those now without hope. And you will receive the end of your faith, everlasting life. Our prayers go with you. We have faith in you for you have faith in Him. Arthur VV. Lynip, A.M., Ph.D. Dean of the College 12 i H. A joint session is held weekly, after which various prayer groups assemble for the sole pur- pose of intercessory prayer on behalf of the needs of the various mission fields. One outstanding feature of their vital program this year was the Sixth Missionary Conquest. FELLOWSHIP Know Him . . . By All Ricans . . . hfake Him Knownf, was the stirring theme. Thirteen mis- sionaries from ten different boards were repre- sented on campus, giving clear pictures of mis- sionary life. Critics Applaud Vitalit of 'Messia The Houghton College Oratorio Society, the largest chorus to sing in Kleinhan's Music Hall in Buffalo, presented Handelfs Messiah under the direction of Eldon E. Basney on Friday evening, December l0. The chorus, composed of about 340 students and townspeople, was accom- panied by the Buffalo Philharmonic orchestra. The Buffalo Courier-Ex- press, which sponsored the concert, criticized the performance in this manner: An undemonstrative and unassuming baton was more than ad- equate to control the well-prepared singers. Their diction and tonal vi- tality made the festival choruses ring in welcome proportions throughout the auditorium. The write-up in the Buffalo Even- ing News stated that the performance was notable for the freshness and enthusiasm of the singing, its musical security and the clarity of the part- singing. The climaxes, too, were just- ly proportionedf, Mr. Eldon Basney received a it 71 f h h good response rom t e orc estra and except for some occasional too- bright playing from the violins, main- tained a dynamic balance that spoke volumnes for his musicianshipf, Margaret Snow Roy, alto and Her- bert Beattie, bass, were singing with the chorus for the second time. Mrs. Roy's interpretation was warmly feltf' but as a whole her singing was not as rich as last year's. Mr. Beat- tie was hampered by uthroatiness' which was a shame in uview of his ' ,,g,,.1- Performance good sense of style and flexibility? The soprano, Ardis Obermeyer, was especially expressive, her voice fresh and varied in color, with only an oc- casional forced tone marring the smoothness of her singing. Firm and substantial tones and musicanly-sing- ing were revealed by Jon Vicker, the tenor. There was a large audience who was moved by the oratorio and showed its apreciation through the hearty applause. Two performances of the Messiah were given in the Houghton church December 4th at 8:00 and on De- cember 5th at 7:30. The chorus was split in two to accommodate the out- of-rown guests who came in for the presentation. a ham Film: tries hou . bet' Tl ov sity visit Debt Platt One second ment ber 4 ivers F cl debar don and all Daniel Eastman, Prw.w'rlmf,' Eldon LeRoy, Vire- l'rf'sz'denf,' John Stewart, TI'l'IlSIH'lfI',' Dolores Downc Sccrvfa ry STUDENT SENATE The Student Senate endeavors to coordi- nate faculty and student interests in planning campus activities, solving dis- ciplinary problems, and determining poli- cies contributing to the well-being and development of the school.
