Since Working on the first yearbook in 1923, she has served Hough- ton With no thought of self in the capacity of teach- er, advisor, and administrator. More than this, her quiet smile of assurance and her patience in the most trying situations have been a living witness to our theme that in all things He might have the preeminencef' I1 if 1 1 1 I 1 r, 1' 1 1 11: 1- 11 1 1 1 J . 1 1 J3' 5 1 F 'Q' I U 71-751.-,, vf Ni .1 .. 11,1: f55111.5fWvf1 1 .. A T' 'EZQ1'-551.1 f 1: ,Q 1 Cl-IRIST PREEMINENT The most important requirement for success in life is to be lined up with the will of Cod. The cardinal force of Cod's will is that Christ Jesus, who abased himself to taste death for every man, should be exalted to first place -'athat in all things he might have the preeminencei' fColossians 1:16-181. ' Too many Christians are not willing that this should be true in their lives. Yes, they avcw allegiance to Jesus. He is perhaps even prominent in their living and planning, but not preeminent. Preeminence means abdica- tion-taking the Cod-given power of choice and casting it down at Jesus' feet. Preeminence means actually dying to self and letting the Spirit of Christ occupy the Whole man-UTO know nothing save Christ and Him cru- cifiedf,-to experience 'fthe fellowship of His suffering, being made con- formable to His deathf, But only as we abdicate our own will, as we thus 'Edie the deathf' can we be sure that our central objectives are those of God himself, that our will is His. Then when we pray, it will truly be 'Gin His nameu and the Father is pledged to grant our request. The bearing of fruit begins only after the corn of wheat has died. A Cod wants not our efforts, our money, our things. He wants us-emptied of self, filled with the Holy Spirit-to will through us, to work through us fPhilippians 2:1231 , to be through us f1:21j. D O For Q5 Editions . Just a quarter of a century ago, our yearbook made its debut. Since it was a monument to college days, symbolic of perman- ence ancl spiritual strength, it was given the name Boulder. The Boulder has played a variety of roles. In its fifth year it assumed the semblance of a riverboat, and the following year it caught the pioneer spirit. Two years later it sallied back to the days of castles and kings in Europe, and then it managed to step into the colonial, era in America for the next edition. In a more recent year it was Written like a letter to Johnny, and again as a diary. The themes change, but the goal is the same-to recapture the spirit of campus life and to preserve it for days of reflection. ff n All the things that go to make up college life-the simple greetings exchanged on the campus, the pause for prayer be- fore each class, the keen sportsmanship on the gym Hoor, the personal interest of professor in student-yes, in all the things that make up life in Houghton that . . . Gallaqlner 3, PNPP5 Zhu af 7749 The Class of '49, with a membership of 154, is the largest Junior Class in the history of the College. Typical of the American Hmelting pot, five nationalities are represented in the class-Colombian, Brazilian, Puerto Rican, Swiss, and Canadian. The class boasts members from nineteen of the forty-eight states, as well as twenty-two different Christian denominations. Fully half of the men in the class did a tour of duty with the Armed Forces. The social ardor and capability of the class was to be seen early in its life at the Frosh-Junior Party held in the gymna- sium. Produced after the manner of a three-ring circus, that party proved to be the largest ever attempted at Houghton. The Class of '49 has been three-time winners of the class basketball series, placing it high in the athletic bracket. Con- tinual progress and high scholastic honors have consistently characterized the class. Almost one hundred per cent of the Juniors have partici- pated in active Christian extension work at Houghton, purl posing to lead lost souls to a saving knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ. Twenty members of the class are training for foreign mission' work, forty-eight students are preparing for Christian education work on the Hhome Heldfi and nineteen are preparing for the Christian ministry. Truly this class has determined to give Christ the preeminence in all things. 62 Harvey Alford Maria Alvarado Elaine Andrews Mary Lou Armsfrong Elaine Backlund Warren Ball Jeane'He Balzer Joyce Bardwell Beverly Barneff Elva Jean Barr Leslie Beach Roberi Benedici' Sarah Benfon Andrew Berger Carol Bliss Luke Boughfer Rufh Boughfer Marfha Bowers Rurh Bredenberg Carroll Brenflinge William Bruce Janice Burr Nancy Buffers Joyce Clifford Rufh Coldiron ohn Conners Mildred Corfrighf ane Crosby arol Davis Dorofhy Davis F 1 i -ml l l I I 63 Evere'H' Davis Francis Davis Hazel Dermonf Charles DeSan+o Dorofhy Dickens Carl Disbrow George Doepp Florine Donelson Henri Dubois Dorofhy Ellenberger Barbara Ellis Ramona Elmer Roberl' Ernsi' Laura Fancher Maurice Farr John Farrell Sidney Fenfon Horace Fischer Roberf File Miriam Fosfer Alvin French Douglas Gallagher John Garber Mary Anna Gerhard? Ullson A 1 L. Luii ga. JQYWSOTZA D- Qillilan s. Wfqan J. handler Haw af 7750 As a bewildered group of 343 freshmen we came to Hough- ton College in September, 1946. Our sole distinction was that of numbers-the largest class in the schoolis history. Although we now number only 216 according to the Septem- ber, 1947 enrollment, we are still a large class. Our members come from eighteen states of the United States and Canada of the British Empire. A majority, how- ever, come from Houghton's own state, New York. In addi- tion, we represent sixteen denominational backgrounds, more than one-third of the total number of denominations in the Houghton student body. We organized early in our freshman year. Class spirit has become increasingly important in each of our lives. Our mot- to is CHRIST PREEMINENT. Following lively discussion we chose green and white as the colors to represent us in our athletic uniforms and class jackets. The class as a body meets regularly twice a week. The Monday meetings at chapel time are devoted to business, prayer, and testimony. Our Thursday evening prayer meet- ings are sources of great spiritual blessing and uplift under vital Christian chaplains. A survey of the class shows definitely our desire to serve Christ. Of the sixteen occupations into which the Lord has called us, the majority of sophomore students are preparing for the Christian ministry in eight different fields. Already half of our number have participated in extension Work in preparation for full-time Christian service. Truly our desire is HChrist Preeminent -in all things. 68 arion Anderson , oberf Ashfon .lohn Bachman doseplw Barber rances Basseff frederick Bedford illiam Bell aymond Benneff afhleen Benson ufh Bezanson 'hilip Birclwall arold Blah' oberf Bifner arilyn Bourne eHy Boyd ames Boyd arle Brown ary Brunner abella Buchanan onald Budensielc an Bumford mes Burford is Buififanf illiam Calhoun elly Carvaial ul Cauvel rofhy Coddingion illicenf Comn xford Cole an Combs 1' IX William Cook Somers Corson Barbara Coianche Joyce Cowan Aylmer Craffs Charles Cronlc Nelson Crowell Roberf Cummings William Currie Geneva Daniels Henry Davie Arfhur Davis Jesse Deardorff Amalia DeFisl1er Alice Diidine Roberf Dingman Roberi' Doepp Oliver Dongell June Dulreshire Miriam Edwards Paul Ellenberger Jerold Ellison Edward Elveiord Edna Elvidge Roberi England Elwa nda Evans Howard Eva ns Joanna Fancher Maxwell Fancher Donald Flinf ig P298 4 FN X I Z ' U' 1 V M l H 1 U , ,Q fl l , E l . Before we came to Houghton we knew that here was a school founded on the rock, yet we couldn't help but be impressed by the Christ-honoring atmosphere in every activi- ty from the first day when we bowed our heads for prayer before the English test to the inspiring devotions that closed the grand day at Letchworth. 5 With more than half of our class preparing for full-time service, we set our eyes once more on the goal before us. There is yet a great work to be done and we realize it. Principal Houghton is indeed fortunate to have connected with the college, as a vital part of it, our own preparatory school. Under the capable direction of Professor Wesley Moon, assisted by a staff of competent instructors, a scholastically high secondary education is of- fered. Every year finds several foreign students enrolled, as well as many missionaries' children. Here is made possible a high school education in a Christian atmosphere with the opportunity for continuation on into the college. Sitting, lst Row: T. Lazarides, S. Buchalter, P. Benton, J. G 1,. ZA, x '. nut:-v: e REV 4 Q i n MSTRONG ' D .0- THE PREEMINENT CHRIST Writing to the Colossian brethren in Chapter l, verse 15, St. Paul exhorts them to a consideration of the preeminent Christ. He shows Christ,s relation to God, the created universe, and the Church. He is the 'cimage of the invisible Godf' Such a revelation enables us to know the God of this universe who can be trusted, loved, and obeyed. His being lathe firstborn of all creation gives Him priority in time, and su- premacy in place and position. He is the SOURCE, the AGENT, and the GOAL of all creation. Toward Him all movements converge! He is the Alpha and Omega of the Father's creative purpose. Today He still upholds all things by the Word of His power. He is also the 'cfirstborn from the deadlw He has risen, never to die again, and the fact that He is the firstborn implies that others follow. Because of this we can join in words of adoration with the hymn writer: All hail the power of Jesus' name, Let angels prostrate fall, Bring forth the royal cliaclem, And crown Him Lord of all. Thus at Houghton College We seek to make Him, who is the center of the universe, preeminent in our lives. It is our purpose to worship Him, serve Him, adore Him, and eventually reign with Him. C.I.A. n W Foreign lVlissions fellowship 5984, ncT - - so - -' 0 know Him-to make Him known is the de- sire of the members of the F.lVl.F. Because an ex- : ' periential knowledge of Him is a vital prerequisite to making Him known, the meets each Tuesday to pray for the needs of the students on the campus and for the specific needs of the missionaries in the field. Several former members of the group are now serving Christ in Africa and China. Speakers from various mission boards present the challenge of their own field, giving the students an opportunity for an intelligent prayer approach regard- ing their decisions to making Him known in these fields. The group has candidates for China, Japan, India, South America, Africa, South Seas, Europe, Puerto Rico-in fact, for all parts of the globe in the capa- city of evangelists, teachers, translators, doctors, child evangelists and of the many other trained workers needed on the field. Outside speakers and faculty mem- bers have brought inspirational mes- REV- JAMES DE WEERD sages to the group. These messages present different methods of approach- ing various phases of Christian work 0 , and of meeting and solving problems 662 which are inevitable to one who is in Christian service. The outlet for Christian service on HOl1ght0l1,S campus is found in the TORCH BEARERS organization. On the first and third Sunday afternoon of each month members deeply aware of the need for Godis guidance, meet at the college church for a time of prayer. Members of the faculty, pastors, and laymen, trained in the practical problems of personal work, give advice and inspiration to the group. This meeting is the driving force of the religious extension work of the college. A brief survey of what is being accomplished reveals that each week groups visit the Fillmore Hospital, Lamont Nursing Home, Angelica County Home, and the Rocky Crest Sanitarium at Olean. These students represent the spirit of Houghton as they seek to demonstrate the love of Christ in personal conversation and testimo ny. Also, the students are able to show the reality of Christ in their own lives as they hold meetings or visit with the men in the county jails and the Attica State Prison. On Saturday evenings two or three carloads of workers hold street meet ings in nearby towns, proclaiming theneed of a personal knowledge of Christ as supreme Lord and Savior. On week-ends, teams of live or six members present evangelistic services, radio programs, and cooperate with '4Youth for Christi' ef forts in cities within a one hundred-mile radius of Houghton. The TORCHBEARERS realize they have na charge to keepv in carrying the torch of the Gospel through personal work on our campus and through extension work to the neighboring towns and villages. de 6eZd Q0 Q , 4 if Q l A 1oRCH5EARE M. 'i -I-hot the Mon of God Together with meeting spiritual and intellectual needs, Houghton provides a full program of athletics to help its students develop physically. These include Football, Basketball, Tennis, Field Hockey, Track, and Baseball. All competition is intramural, for we believe that student participation can there- by be at a maximum. Upon registration each student is classified Purple or Cold, and the result gives everyone a chance to represent his color in any particular sport. Each class also forms a team for Football, Basketball, and Field Hockey to enter in the series which is held for each of these. The class and Purple-Gold teams were very evenly matched this year and were characterized by clean play and good sportsmanship. Football ended in a surprising three-way tie after the favored sophomores were humbled in the final game, while the Frosh girls snatched the Field Hockey crown. The Juniors triumphed over strong opposition in Basketball for their third con- secutive championship after a series that will be remembered for its thrills. All in all, athletics at Houghton in 194-8 were of a high quality and Christ was given the preeminence from the word of prayer before each game to the silent thanks afterward. Absolute fidelity to God's written word and the highest type of Christian scholarship brought to hear upon it, here unite with an earnest emphasis upon vital spiritual living, and a personal witness to that living Word without Whom we can do nothing. The teaching is accordingly true at every point to the great Christian fundamentals, including the pre- millennial return of Christ. Since the Bible is true, it will endure the severest tests, honestly applied.
