We dedicate the nineteen forty-five Boulder. Whether studying the brain or dis- secting Rana. We found an ideal in your corn- plete, accurate scholarship sparkling with deft touches of humor. We may have failed some tests-most of us did-but the scientific attitude seems no longer a mere phrase. Having profited by the example shown us, We Want to keep the spirit of science as we become doctors, nurses, teachers, and min- isters. Your efficiency in the administrative posts of dean of men and now dean of the col- lege has been accompanied by quiet friend- liness. An unassuming greeting on the cam- pus helped many of us to see warmth be- hind the cold signature on grade reports. The work of professor of biology, chairman of the division of science and mathematics, and dean of the college has not been able to extinguish an humble, helpful spirit. To those who get up for Sunday School your spiritual talks and pointed illustrations have been a source of inspiration. ln a sin- cere life reflecting His Spirit, the rest of us have seen a challenge. A few remember a blessed prayer meeting in Zoology class a year ago, and that final prayer of a melted, concerned heart deepened our consecra- tions. Short, smiling expressions of confi- dence, understanding chats, and a deeply reverent attitude helped to transform Hough- ton from a catalog or campus into a living, personal institution, an embodiment of Christ. A wry smile lighting an illusively disin- terested face, an assisting hand at a micro- scope lens, a prayer addressed to God as an intimate Friend-these pictures of you are permanent, Dr. Moreland. Whether or not We remember the characteristics of the phy- lurn Plcrtyhelminthes, your life has been placed on the reference shelf of our minds. leaders I 7 emem erin? ougkfon A ami in eruice Once college meant Houghton, now, to our servicemen, college means memories of Houghton, and to us, Houghton has meant memories of our servicemen. We missed them wherever we went-to classes, clubs. or games. Sometimes we joked about Hough- ton's becoming a girls' school, but nobody really thought it was funny. Basketball, for instance, wasn't the same with our best play- ers gone. The seniors said they would have had the championship if they had only had a team, and maybe they were right. Classes were different, too, science was the last field to be invaded, but eventually that fell, too. Lab assistants were so rare they were almost non-existent. As for the humanities, they were manned by women from the start. Even some of the professors left. We were glad to be able to write, some of us practically lived by correspondence. We formed the Servicemens Letter Circle and sent the Star all over the world, because the men said they liked to get mail. When letters came back from anywhere and every- where, we wished we had learned more ge- ography and started poring over maps. Radio commentators helped us with the pro- nunciation of Burmese villages and German internment camps. Our interests were united into a real effort by war programs and banquets, everyone was grateful for the work that went into them. We vied to see which class could double its war bond quota first, but we knew that buying stamps and bonds meant more than any mere competition. Although dis- appointed that the equipment we bought never got to the campus, some of us are still looking forward to riding in a jeep. We wished we could do more for the war ef- fort, everything faded into insignificance be- side one gold star. Yes, We missed the servicemen, and we prayed for them, and some of us wept. in perilous times 1 1 X .L,f.,f,,, ,S . ,X fl? t X 4 rl - -.fiifi-L ' li . gg X sf- f' . .wl -gSX'2ir. t ix is .:.t,.-Qyf g 972 - . - ,ing ., N . 'Ti'-if Y., ff.,-,fly H. . ,, , . Tall, White pillars gleaming in the sun- these are symbols of Houghton College. Whether sleepily rambling to eight o'cloclc classes or strolling to the Pantry, We were impressed by the graceful lines of Luckey Memorial. The silent strength of the columns, set on age old stone, paid lasting tribute to those who had built a college Founded on the Rock. Registration lines, reserve books, and d e a n s' conferences incorporated Luckey in our daily lives. Yet even more than deference to the past or utility for the present, We found here a promise of Hough- ton yet to be. Having this building for a cen- ter, plans for the new campus quadrangle made us feel that We were part of a college With a challenging future. These stately pil- lars embody the spirit of Houghton, the spirit of building on the Rock. Pearl Harbor meant continued uncertainty and disruption, a change in the meaning of life at Houghton. Still, however altered they Were, the War years were our years. As our classmates left to serve the cause of America, We remained on campus to study and play and think. ln the spirit of Hough- ton We found hope for lite in the future. Classes and Chapels, professors and friends, church services and prayer meetings gave us a sense of values, an introduction to the Per- son upholding these values. He was the Rock on which We chose to found our lives, These years at Houghton we have built, sometimes unconsciously, upon that Founda- tion. To present the spirit of Houghton Col- lege in the persons and events of this year is the goal of the nineteen forty-five Boulder. Mental maturity, spiritual stature, athletic ability, and personal poise--these things We built last year. Paine, Ph.D. .izle poinfec! fAe 'Wag More than a shady campus Walk or pine trees jutting into blue skies, the personalities of Houghton have made college meaningful to us. Directing the building of the school and by his influence directing the building of our lives, Dr. Stephen W. Paine has for eight years been president of Houghton Col- lege. Many of us have been impressed by the spiritual depth and clarity of the simple, humble, but always challenging message he brought at summer conferences. Here on campus, the same spirit in conversational chapel talks and smiling greetings endeared him to us as Doc, lt was he who introduced many of the upperclassmen to the intricacies of Greek grammar. Perhaps future less vivid condi- tions are a bit hazy now, but Docs analytic mind and respect for thoroughness continues to command our profound respect. Possess- ing a critical and scholarly appreciation of the ancients, Dr. Paine made their Works liv- ing things. Whether or not we studied Greek, thought provoking chapel talks on Tuesday mornings were a source of spiritual chal- lenge. lndicting the movie industry or eluci- dating a verse of Scripture, Doc revealed clearness and depth of thought and intensi- ty of spirit. Many of us found in his analysis of truth and reality a basis for rethinking our own ideas of things. Stimulated, informed, inspired by his life, We as students felt that Dr. Paine was -in- separably linked to the concept of Hough- ton. We Were confident that the building of our school and of our lives would be lasting as he pointed the Way. jeg 0-orcbnafecl fLe gyforf Drawing plans, making rules, advising students, the administrative stail guided Houghton of today with a view toward Houghton yet to be. Vexed at times by a science requirement or an eight o'clock con- tlict, we went to the registrar's office to re- ceive personal interest and advice from Miss Davison. A merry grin from the dean of men or a friendly chat with Miss Beck built our confidence in them and in our- selves. As newly elected Business Manager, Prof. W. G. Smith cooperated with Dr. Paine and Dr. Moreland in completing a program for college improvement. The plans for the new dormitory were made concrete under the supervision of Mr. York. Widening its program oi music education, Houghton pre- pared to add the degree ot B. Mus. to the two degrees now offered. Under the leader- ship ol the administration Houghton Col- lege planned for a broader educational ministry, under their guidance college and students built upon the Rock. y First Row-Elizabeth Beck, Dean of Womenp Stephen W, Paine, President, LeRoy Pancher, Vice-Presidentg Rachel Davison, Registrar.
