The conductor enters and talces his place on the potium. A few well-directed words, an expectant baton, and the strains of an un- familiar piece attack the ether. After some measures, there is a tapping of the baton: someone is out of tune or someone cannot follow the time. There is a fresh start and after many such experiences comes the finished product. Now it is Friday evening in the Houghton College Chapel. This time all is quiet until the conductor comes down the aisle and takes the stand as the audience applauds. The Houghton College Little Symphony Orchestra is about to present another concert. As the baton is lifted, anticipation becomes realization and the audience enioys Orpheus in der Unterwelt by Ottenbach or perhaps Egmont by Beethoven. The orchestra was organized by its conductor, Professor Alton Cronk. Since its inception with Professor John Andrews as Concertmeister, it has grown in size and quality of performance. This year's orchestra has had the services of Professor Homan, Mr. Hollenbach, Mr. Alger and other talented musicians. Following their schedule, the Orchestra gave two home concerts and a number of concerts abroad. ' I -, I I I I I I ' u - q - . , . , I Sophs Hand Sages Initial Setback Babbitt Rings Up Only Score On a rainswept field, last Friday afternoon, a stubborn sophomore ifootball squad eked out a Z-O win rover the senior sages. It was apparent from the opening kick-off that it would be a hard game for both teams. Neither of the two 'rain-soaked teams was a master over the other. There was only one mas. ter of the day-rain. The entire game ,was spotted with bad passes, fumbles and slipping feet. This fact proved to be fatal to the seniors. I Late in the first period a poor pass from center sent the ball rolling through Capt. Eyler's hands deep in his own territory. Babbitt, sopho- more guard, rushed speedily for Ey- ller. There was a desperate fight for the ball and it finally rolled over the seniors' goal line and was recovered by Eyler. Immediately Babbitt was upon him and touched him, execut- ing a safety. This gave the sophs their two point advantage and the only tally of the game. From that point on it was a see- saw affair with neither team threat- ening 'the other. In the last few minutes of play the seniors tried des- perately to score by throwing long passesg however, it was a useless fight. The backheld men of both teamsl had trouble with the slippery ball and many of their passes were intercepted. One factor, however, was very pre- dominant in the game. Both Capt. Eyler and Brown Boy Wells dis- played brilliant kicking performances. Another fact was noticed by those few drenched spectators and that was the fine blocking showed by both, reams. Rain is a bad enemy and both teams knew it. The seniors didn'tr try any of their swinging door plays which in the past games have proven a definite offensive weapon. The combination of Foster, Will, Mullin and Eyler seemed balked. The sophs had a two point lead and intended to keep it. They showed a slight edge over the seniors, but the difference was not great enough to be decisive. The sophs settled down to a purely conservative game and after the final whistle blew went to a friendly shower, overjoyed with a :wo point victory. I l l l 1 , i Sophomore Stalwarts Beat Acadamy in Gridiron Tussle Sporadic Gains and Costly Blunders Characterize Playg Stone, Walker Star The hard fighting high school team bowed to the superior squad to the tune of 13-0 the afternoon of Monday, October 7. drizzle soaked the field, ball and players alike making the game usually dependent upon the breaks. . Post bellum statistics reveal that the Stalwarts gained their by successfully running back kicksg for they returned boots a total one yards, while they made only eighty-one yards by passing, and thirty-two by running. The sophomore backfield quartet threw sixteen incompleted passes, fumbled once, intercepted three academy tosses and kicked twice, averaging thirty-tvvo yards. They failed to earn a first down. u Walker l-ligh Scorer With II Counters Driving hard to a 9 to 3 lead during the first quarter, the high school basketeers, last Friday evening, January 10, swept down on the theo- logs, but it proved costly in the final balance. For when their resources were needed most in the concluding quarter, they were unable to tide the deacon's offensive wave, and were defeated 26'to 18 on the last czpzzzt. Harry Walker, the nucleus of the seminary squad, exhibited clever ball handling, for which he was rewarded high scorer with 11 points. His adroit interceptions, lightning fakes, and skillful passes completely con- fused the theologs at times. Retriev- inglhis own incompleted shots and dexterously dribbling through deacon defense lines characterized his form of basketball. The theolog quintet showed a more equal balance of skill among its players, and when the mid-mark was sounded the high school's margin had diminished to a one point lead. In the third quarter the two teams played give and takf' on an equal basis. The theologs substituted a new regiment toward the end of the quarter, while the academic cagers shifted from a zone to a man for man defense, and the score was equalized points for each team. The last quarter predicted a hazy outcome as both teams prepared for the final whistle. Walker drib- bled through a free court for a basket for the high school, and Hill pre- sented the theologs with a two-point- er. Lamos and Walker each netted a foul shot, and with two more points credited to their tally, the theologs led 20 to 18 with three minutes to play. In three deciding shots the deacons rushed to the top to score 6 points, clinching their victory. i l l l sophomore A steady more than advantage of ninety- ft The academy lads gained a total of one hundred and fourteen yards by passing, forty-one yards by run- ning back kicks and six yards by run- ning. They intercepted Eve sopho- more passes, tossed sixteen incomplet- ed passes, made two costly fumbles and earned three first downs. Harry Walker starred in the punting of the afternoon, booting seven times aver- aging thirty-three yards. Except for one poor nearly blocked punt, his 'average would have been the highest Qof the current season. A Perusal of the statistics reveals that ithe two squads were fairly evenly matched despite the score. The first touchdown, scored after only a min- ute and forty seconds of play, was due to a lucky pass interception by Clark on the academy 25 yard line. The touchdown was effected by a pass from Hall to Stone. The attempted place kick for the extra point went wide of the mark. The second touchdown came mid- way in the last quarter when Stone intercepted on the 20 and scamperecl across the goal line unchallenged. Sheffer whipped Clark a bullet pass for the extra point. The defeat of the academy lads may be laid to their lack of material. Their bag of tricks is necessarily lim- ited principally to the ability of two or three players. When they are in scoring position, they lack that final drive they need. Principal factor con- tributing to their splendid, if score- less, showing is versatile I-Iarry Wal- ker, elusive as smoke backfield ace. Monday afternoon Frosh Ring Up lnitial Win ln Encounter t r death periodn spirit enacted. Long shooting was popular but very inacc- urate. Al Russell was tossed out on fouls, the only player to get the :'hcave. Witli five minutes left to play, the seniors snatched a lead of one point on an Eyler-directed basket. Their lead was short-lived, however, since Walker retaliated with a two- point heave to rake again a lead which the frosh never relinquished. Near the end, to protect the slim lead, Harry Walker put on an exhibition of dribbling and one-man play, the like of which has never been seen in these parts. The final score read 22-21. The contest was hard fought all the way. Both teams played bang- up ball, even though their shooting was off form. High scorer for the With Seniors l Waaser Makes V - Athletic Debut On Friday evening at the Bedford Gymnasium, a strong frosh five downed an equally strong and senior aggregation 22-21. It was an illegal contest as the frosh played six men all the way, for'.Wilbur Waa- ser played the roles of two players to perfection. Wlieii the seniors got a rebound from the baclcboard, Waa- ser was attached to the opposite sur- face and wouldn't let go. Two-point Waaser went up to five points while the senior forward who recently was high scorer in a game took Waaser's place as Two-pointy Russell. After a unique publicity stunt which went astray because no one realized its significance, the game got under way in the typical minor league style-rough and tumble football. It was not long until it was evident that both teams were definitely off , but as the contest proceeded, the players slowly regained some of their stuff.:' Waaser began his defensive and offensive tactics early in the game and to him a large part of the credit sport fans of Houghton with in numerable thrills as the frosh and SOpl1 football teams came together in a genuine classic culminating in a 6-6 tie. Both teams started the hrst quarter off with a rather pathetic passing attackg however, as time pro grossed the lines began to hold bet fer, giving the backlielcl time to improve its marksmanship. Hairy Walker's long pass to Arland Rec over the goal line was the play tha made the hrst quarter outstanding in the minds of all, for not only did it bring a fighting spirit into the frosh, but it gave a moral uplift to to the underratedsoph team. The kick for the extra point was blocked by Hertel, giving the sophs a 6-0 edge. Theifrosh, after receiving Wal- lcer's kick, ended the first quarter with a twenty yard gain -Powell running around left end for 10 yards, and then on the second play passing to Cole for another 10-yard gain, The second and third quarters were spent SCE-Sawing back and forth across the held, with neither team coming into a scoring position. S I Revitalized Frosh The fourth quarter saw a revital- ization of the freshman team, as Powell and Cole began to make their' passes count, in an effort to at least contest was Harry Walker with 11 points to his credit. Next came Eyler with six and a three-way tie-Wake- field, Lord, and Waaser with five rallies apiece. l The junior Jaguars took the aca- lllerny lads to the tune of 42-18 Clie llfrernoon of Monday, November 18, ,-ut the score tells only part of the lltory, for it hardly seems rash to say Nhat the bantams won a moral ory. The sloppy brand of basket- lvall exhibited by the juniors may have lieen only the anti-climax after their narrow extra-period defeat at the rands of the frosh the previous Sat- irday night, but they certainly didn't ook like the same team. i Mike Holloway was high-scorer hith seventeen points and Harry lVahsity Walker was runner-up ,yith nine. Both teams employed a :hree-two zone defenseg their offense .vas non-descript. Fire department style was the order of the day with wild passing, erratic shooting and headlong dribbling. vic- for the victory is due inasmuch as he bolstered both the team's defense and spirit. Armstrong, Wallter, and Wfaaser scored offensively' to give the frosh the lead at the quarter time During the second period, the sen- ior offensive awakened as Lord, Wakefield, and Eyler filtered through the .frosh defense to put their team back in the running. Wil- bur Waaser continued his brilliant defense and time and time again tied up the senior offensive when they were on a scoring spree. At the half the frosh led 10-9. Coming out after the half, both teams relapsed into a spell of ragged playing. On every play the ball was thrown away before any attempt to set up a scoring opportunity could be made. Finally the two opposing aggregations settled down. The scoring was about even, the frosh up five to the seniors' fOUf tie the score. Towards the end of the quarter Powell heaved a long pass to Cole which bounced off the hands of l larry Xvall-:er img the waiting arms of Cole for the touch- down that tied the game. The final effort for the extra point was blocked by the soph line. The hnal whistle blew soon after, bringing to an end a smoothly played game, for with the exception of the first quarter, when both teams were far from clicking, the game found each team capable of executing a formidable passing attack as well as good kicking. U According to the statistics of the game both teams played very evenly -especially the kicking between Wal- ker ancl Creque which averaged about 35 yards, Walker- raking a slight edge. The frosh made the only first clown of the game although the sophs more than once came extremely close. Passing on both teams showed rather poor marksmanship on the passers' part, for the number of inter- ception came very close to rivaling the number of completions, however. aside from this, both teams should be complimented on the smooth way they handled the hall.
