Reisdorph fEditorj THE PEBBLE STAFF On a cold, dreary day early this fall The Pebble Staff huddled together to have their first meeting. Upon them hung an important decision. But anyone who knew the class of 1950 would have known what the final outcome would be. In the year 1945 a courageous junior class had decided to publish a souvenir of their alma mater. The Pebbles from that year to this have continued with that same aim. However, we had to decide whether we would make the '49 Pebble just a souvenir or a real year book. If we did publish a year book, we realized also that much more time, work, and money would be involved. The policy of the class of 1950 has always been that of forgetting previous traditions and proceeding on our own.', With this spirit we could not help deciding to publish a real yearbook, the '49 Pebble. We trust that, in the years to come, other classes will also do their utmost to publish a yearbook worthy of this school. We have had a great deal of fun working on this yearbook. We only hope you, the reader, will enjoy reading it as much as we have enjoyed producing it. S I. No gas Clary 2. Fern lpotted or other wisel 3. Always some clog fwolfl followin' 1-er 4. Finney, Mrs. Castle FRESI-IMEN As we began our high school career, we felt like adventurers embarking on a ship of opportunity with Christ as our captain. We realized our privilege of making something of these next few years, and we determined to do our best though Christ, our strength. Although few in number, we have had much fun together. Our Christmas party was an especially festive event. We shall continue to trust in the Lord and claim this promise . . . In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths. -Proverbs 3:6 God certainly has given us an outstanding year of fun and study. Our aim and motto for the future is Conquerors through Christ. 7Tl-I AND 8TI-I GRADE September 8, 1949, thirteen rollicking sailors dropped anchor on Houghton's hill. In a few weeks the dizziness caused by new experiences had vanished, and we set out with real land legs to win the high school scholarship banner. At the end of the first marking period, the award was ours. Halloween offered the first opportunity for social activity. Our homeroom unanamously answered the call of the black cat invitations and merrily trooped into Mrs. Kilpatrick's home for a frolic of games and contests. The Christmas party at Kreckman's marked another highlight in our social life. In April we presented the Easter chapel program dramatizing The Case of the Easter Bunny and also the Easter story in scripture. 14 Mrs. Kilpatrick, L. Kreckman, R. Hamilton, G. Barker, S. ARMSTRONG FROM CDUR PASTOR Years ago a very dear friend wrote my name in the fly-leaf of a lovely new Bible of mine fat my requestj . Then this friend wrote that part of the quotation from the ninety-first Psalm, as heads this item, under my name. That has been a life motto for me ever since that time. He that dwelleth . . . shall abidef, What a Psalm is this! Many have felt that there is no poem in Latin or Greek comparable to this Hebrew Ode. We doubt that one can find anything in human language, anywhere, more solid, more beautiful, or more profound than this lovely Scripture. We have no means of dating it. Nor can we credit it to any human author with certainty. ln the entire collection of Psalms none stand out with such a sub- lime and sustained note of faith throughout. And so, in the high Alpine peaks of eternal verities its author begins: He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. The late Dr. G. Campbell Morgan said: This psalm is one of the greatest possessions of the saints. It is a great song of the safety of such as put their trust in Jehovah, and it contains the Divine assurance of such faith as fruitful. Very little of exposition is necessary. What is the Secret Place of the Most High? The idea of this secret placev is met with often in Scripture. Sometimes it tells of some secret hiding-place, such as David often resorted to when a fugitive from King Saul. There the sure pro- tection of God was likened to such a safe shelter. At other times the central tent of the commander of an army seems to be meant. Psalm 27:5- He shall hide me in His pavilion. There the thought is that an enemy would have to break through rank after rank of the encamped army ere he could reach the well-guarded 16 central tent of the commander, or leader. Such inaccesibility to the foe, is taken as an emblem of our security in God. Howeyer, in verse one of this ninety-first Psalm, we thinlc the allusion is here made to the most holy place of the tabernacle and the temple, that sacred chamber where no one but the High Priest went once each year, and that on the great Day of Atonement, bearing the blood of atone- ment for the sins of the people. That secret place was the earthly dwelling-place of God. There between the cherubims He was said to dwell. ln the name of the Lord jesus Christ, our merciful and faithful high priest , wc come to God, pleading His all-sufficient sacrifice and atonement. The law's condemnation, sin's powcr, all earthly care, yea, even death and the cold grave can do us no harm as long as we ABIDE. We too shall be able to testify to others as the writer of this text, if we dwell in the secret-place: fverse Zl I will say of the Lordf, Yes, if we abide we shall Say! We shall confess a good con- fession before men everywhere, because we dwell and abide. I will say of the Lord, He is my God . . . Yea, He has become the confidence, the delight, the supreme joy of our souls. Oh, young people, begin early to practice the DWELLING in the secret- place! He will be to you, not a refuge, but My Refuge! Then in your life as in the rest of the Psalm. there will be one prolonged testimony to the blessedness of thus dwelling in God. No matter the place, no matter the test. And so the nromise is declarrd in this sacred writ: I will be with him in troublez I will deliver himf, Make it vovvr first business in life to DWELL,,-tlien you shall ABIDE.,' And keep on abiding. 17 Linda lVIclVIillen, Barbara Stedman, Ruth Ryerse PRAYER MEETING COMMITTEE He who lives without prayer, he who lives with little prayer, he who seldom reads the word, he who seldom looks up to Heaven for a fresh influence from on high - he will be the man whose heart will become dry and barren. But he who calls in secret on his God, who spends much time in holy retirement, who delights to meditate on the words of the Most High, whose soul is given up to Christ - such a man must have an overflowing heart, and as his heart is, such will his life be. These words spoken by C. H. Spurgeon help us to realize more and more, the great need for much prayer in the life of a Christian, if he is really going to accomplish anything for his Lord. Our prayer meetings this year have brought inspiration and blessing to many. We realize that the thin s that we have accom lished have come to ass onl be- g P P v Y cause we have waited before God in prayer. Trul the ra er meetin is the ower house of the church. As we think of u Y P V g P this past year, we know that we can make a similar statement. We sincerely believe our prayer meetings have been a great help in making our high school count for God. 18 a l Hack Row: R. Knowlton. M. Russell, G. Kehrein, H. Webb, C. Wriglit, Clarlc, M. The purpose is to instruct them in the effects of alcoholic liquor and narcotics, and to show them the injury to both their body and their morals through its use. One purpose is to make them aware of the subtlety of brewers' propaganda and teach them vital facts concerning prohibition. All members of the high school are eligible for membership, and about twenty-five of our members attend regularly. Mrs. Cecil Russell is director. The meetings are held monthly in different homes. Each year a poster contest is held, and prizes in money are given for the best one. Speaking contests are also held each year in which it is possible for a person to earn silver, gold, pearl, or diamond awards. Bill Twaddell was the winner of the silver medal award this year. Nichols, T. Lazarides, S. Fergusson, R. Knowlton ATHLETIC ASSOCIATION This year the high school was represented in athletics by tfie girls as well as the boys. The girls not only resumed the basketball team after a two years, lapse, but also began a field hockey team, which shows much promise. After being thor- oughly defeated twice, the hockey team lost the last two games by only one point each. The girls showed great improvement, and next year might well put a team to challenge the best the college can offer. The girls were not quite so successful in basketball, but it must be remembered that they play comparatively better teams. Here again, a very marked improve- ment showed that better teams are coming in succeeding years. Though playing in a different league, the boys were much more successful. Though they got off to a bad start by losing two out of the first three games, they came back to win the next six and ended by tying for second place in the first round. ln the second round, a double elimination tournament, they ended in first place, with only one defeat. A playoff game with the Houseletts, winners of the first round, ended with the High School on the best end of a 33-27 score, clinching the championship of the House League. In touch football it can only be said that the boys tried and succeeded in making a touchdown, something that was not done by last yearis team. Much of the credit for our successes this year belongs to Mr. Harr, our coach. He not only showed us how to play hockey and football, but also demonstarted by his life that a real athlete can serve the God we honor. His little talk followed by our time of prayer before each game will be something each of us will keep as a treasured memory. 23 G. Kclmrcin, l.. Knowlton, S. Fcrgusson, Mr. Harr, Baker, S. Shea, C.
