Girls' State The week long session of Arkansas Girls' State opened on May 27, 1979. Among the 1200 delegates were five girls from Hot Springs High School. Arkansas Girls' State was the second largest in the nation. Ouachita Baptist Univer- sity at Arkadelphia became a model government center for the week. Elections, lectures, and general sessions provided the delegates with on hand experiences in government. Vis- its and lectures by Governor Clinton, Senator Bumpers, and Secretary of State Paul Reviere enriched the week long experiences. The highlight of the week was when the dele- gates assumed control of the Capitol in Little Rock on Friday. 1. Girls' State Delegates: 1st Row: Shelly Whitt, Kathy Stark, Lisa Wilson. 2nd Row: Pam Dunn. Julie Johnson. 2. Bill Clinton addresses the 1200 girls at Girls' State. 3. Dale Bumpers is interviewed by KATV before entering the General Ses- sion. 4. The delegates give a speaker a standing ovation. 5. Bill Clinton fights his way through the crowd.

v 5 Boys State Eleven .lunior boys, elected hy the faculty, represented Hot Springs High School at 1979 Boys' State. On June 2 they arrived at U.C.A. in Conway. Upon arrival each boy was placed in an imagi- nary city and county in order to learn the workings ol government. Elections and lectures occupied much of the time for the rest ol the week. Physical fitness in the form of ealisthenics helped the future leaders pass the time. l. Boys' State Delegates: Ist Row: Stephen Puck- ett. Mike Sloan, Louis Hoyt, Wallace Snowden, Clay Cook. 2nd Row: Lewis Sanders, Lance Robin- son. Tommy Daniel, Rick Holt. Bobby Angell, Greg Spurlin. 2. Wallace Snowden serving as Attorney General at Boys' State. 3. Delegates lis- ten to an important speaker, 4. The boys gather to go inside lor a General Session.

Harding Seminar During the week of June 11-17, Lester Brown, Audri- anna Grisham, Mason Hayes, Ethel Knight, Richard Morrow, and Lea Mullins had the pleasure of attending the Harding Youth Citizenship Seminar which was held in Searcy, Arkansas. The six H.S.H.S. students attended morning and eve- ning classes, but also had time for extracurricular activi- ties such as swimming, basketball, tennis, football, and frisbee. The trip was sponsored by the Civitan Club, who also sponsored a banquet. The six students were presented with citizenship plaques, but most importantly, they acquired memories and friendships that will last a life- time. l 4 l 1.
