But they soon gained confidence that math could be as interesting a mystery as a jig-saw or a crossword puzzle. When Miss Cox added her deep purple outfits and rich humor to each and every algebra problem. the numbers seemed to fit into place automatically. Coach Brooks did just as well with his plane geometry, solid geometry, and trigonometry. His oddly shaped geometric figures fthe Uparallela- gramic outhouse, etc.J almost explained them- selves. The same sort of procedures gave Colonel Lawes good results. He injected practical ways of solving difficult math questions into the minds of his business mathematicians. Pczqe Z4 Bu! V wr , . ?: f3 Z5 Distributive Education M S University of Arkansas B G STEPHENS Director of Vocational Education B S East Texas State Teachers College A very popular program in school was the Co-operative Part- time or Vocational Program. The more than seventy-five high-school students Who were enrolled in dis- tributive education and diversified occupations classes attended school in the morning and a job in the af- ternoon. This arrangement offered students the opportunity to obtain work experience and on-the-job training along with assistance in the choice of a suitable occupation. After the students had received suf- ficient advice, Mrs. Mosier and Mr. Stephens, their directors, then found jobs for them - the acid test of the pr'ogram's success. Many students not interested in straight academic work or high-school life were thus encouraged to remain in school. While working, the students could see the need for organized vocational training and could develop new attitudes toward responsibilities. This system also helped establish correct work habits and co-oper- ation with other Workers. The Vocational Program was organized with the counsel of advisory committees composed of employers, labor, and school representatives. Participating students were required to have completed the tenth grade and to be at least sixteen years old. Page 29 Ada Lou Anderson and Evelyn Rogers add to an attractive dis- play at S.H. The highlight of the term was that fabulous trip to Oklahoma City, where falong with numer- ous other adventuresb the Trojans played under 4 s the Greek baton of Dr. Revelli, famous Ior ms Michigan State wonder-band. A new feature this year was the open-air con- cert given in Pine Bluff by the Little Rock, Hot Springs, and Pine Bluff bands acting as one unit. Playing host to nearly 4,000 band students at the spring State Music Festival held in Hot Springs was no small job. Neither were the formal concerts presented in assemblies and the imagina- tive half-time shows which spiced the football games. Interest was also kept high by the Band Banquet in the Christmas season and the annual Band Variety Show in the spring. So goes an old proverb, and the 185-voice Trojan Chorus was a shining example. Director D, J fl Ledgerwood guided her song- sters to top honors in the annual State Music Festi- val. Hot Springs was host to the festival this year, with over 3,000 students from all over Ark- ansas participating. With all of their projects one would think the chorus had no time for any extra ones, but they contributed their time and musical talents to the Lion Club's minstrel, the proceeds of which were given to charity. Yes, the chorus had fun, and there was no better example than the sun- shiny brightness that sparkled in every song. Highlighting the team s season were the North Little Rock Fort Smith and Tex- arkana games. Their first conference victory was over the North Little Rock Wildcats 50-41. A truly pulse-quickening Trojan vic- tory was over Fort Smith 38-36' the score was tied repeatedly but fouls in the overtime cost Fort Smith the game. The Trojans' loss against the Texarkana Razorbacks, 54-53, was a heartrending de- feat. During the last quarter, when the score was deadlocked five times, a fatal Hot Spring shot falling short of the basket and a dis- tressing foul gave the Razorbacks their chance to gain a point. Then playing time ran out before the Trojans could even the score. Every girl placed those eye-catching marks on the most enticing parts of her face. And the white bucks. How we fretted to keep our new shoe favorites spic and span! I Beauteous homecomings in all their regal plendor were the most elaborate ever Well never forget the sparkling rad1ant faces of the Ladies of the Court and their proud escorts Christmas and New Year spirits soared high as December came to a close and blossomed forth into January But our holiday spirits were slightly deflated when mid term exams beckoned us back to school The state music festival paved the way for our class activities What events they were too' The unforgettable performances of the senior play What a Lxfe were pre sented in early May In fast succession the Junior senlor prom and receptlon wlll day the senior silver tea our class picruc and the senior banquet followed. Remarked one girl Was I ever surprised during enrollment! It was so easy! Before all of us were lost and scurrying around - just like the sophs this year! Excitement rippled through the air when the election of class officers took place. After it was all over some were a little disappointed because their candidates weren t elected to office but soon everyone agreed that the junior officers were doing the very best job pos- sible. Next came the organization of home rooms elections for Student Council repre- sentatives Thespian try-outs and the or- ganization of the various school clubs Now everybody had a place to fill The school year slipped away and in no time the Juniors discovered there was a big undertaking facing them the Junior Senior Prom To raise money they laid plans to present Fog Island These were both tremendous tasks but those Juniors didn t avoid work We got a big kick out of our paint-smeared faces and dirty hands they assured everyone. Prestige surrounded their group when each of these events scored a popular success. Then the big moment came when one- fifth of the juniors having the required grade average were chosen for the National Honor Society. Here at last was recog- nition of their hard work. May soon budded and blo somed and a few sad faces were found because their senior friends would not return next year. But the happy and profitable year behind them determined the juniors to look for- ward to another even more memorable one. - Page 110 - WB' 4' Chrlstlne Adam 'QU ki Wil Bllly Allen Patsy Ayexs Carl Baxley 'QQ F if Sandra Baxl 1 Daxla Sue Bayless Darlene Bearden Robelt Bearden 'E' 4'-2 Lax an Be l -np.
