X' DEDICATION An education which teaches an individual to think for himself is the foundation of democracy. Democracy in action can be seen in each of your classes, Mr. Mitchell. You have worked hard and long to make us think for ourselves. Your opinions and ours often differed, causing the lively discussions which typified history and economics classes. Your profound understanding and broad outlook made learning a pleasure. This we'll remember. To our advisor who guided us through this senior year -to our master of democracy - to our cootie farmer from room 208 - to you, Mr. Mitchell, we dedicate this 1958 Equestrian. , W V 0 I , . , , M4,,, , ,ly g I .,,', .L , - ff-ff. -'aff ,- ' .. , . ,,,,,,,, , - 6. . f - Mr. Harold Merry High School Principal Thank you, Mr. Merry, for the wholesome atmos- phere of learning you have helped develop in our school. We appreciate your tempering justice with mercy, your balanced judgment which discerns the best good for all concerned, your interest in each one of us as we have developed in these years of transition. Mr. C. J. Wheater Supervising Principal We cannot comprehend the devious details of your direction ofthe whole Horseheads Central School com- plex. Buildings, buses, staff and students, all are your responsibility. Your huge family of four thousand students do appreciate the smooth operation of this massive machine. Thank you, Mr. Wheater. You do have the satisfaction of seeing your job well done. We deeply appre- ciate your part in our transition. For president, Colin Chvanyp vice- president, Bill Hurd: secretary, Evelyn Woodruffp and for treasurer, Mike Grigo- riou. We were guided in our activities by Mr. John Stuart and Mrs. Dorothy Page. The dreamy music drew a large crowd to the Two Bit Hop held on February 28th. The dance was sponsored by the freshman class for the benefit of the score- board fund. Several of the prominent students experienced the formation and the first concert of an All-County Band in April. Participants from the county-over pooled their talents to make this one of the finest musical groups in the Southern Tier. The band was the result of careful planning by our director, Mr. James Wilson, and other music instructors of the county. ln May the entire band and also individual soloists performed music in anticipation of top ratings at the NYSSMA Music Festival. Incidentally, the band re- ceived an A rating in grade lV music at the annual Ithaca event last year. The Class of 1958 graduation exercises were aided and animated by the processional and recessional music performed by this fine musical organization. The leadership of our director, Mr. Wilson, and the band officers: David Peck, president, John Impert, vice-president, Colleen Howland, Secretary-Treasurer, Arthur Brown, librarian plus the general cooperation of the members combined to achieve excellent musi- cianship and one of the finest years of band music at Horseheads High. LIBRARY CLUB Through the keyhole we see the meeting place of the science fiction enthusiasts, nature lovers, vicarious travelers, bookworms, and bopsters - the library. Under the guidance of Mrs. Boggs, girls selected from the iunior and senior classes share the responsibility of running our library. Let's watch them at work. Books are being piled around, magazines have to be checked, shelves need to be straightened and, of course, order must be maintained. These problems are handled with tact and dispatch. There are, however, those inevitable questions such as What book do you suggest for me? that are bound to put them in a quandary. Library activities require strict attention, but 'tis said, There is an exception to every rule and this holds true in the library. Today there is a picnic at noon. Just the thought ofthe tantalizing aromas excites the appetite. Ah - the bell, the period is over. They have one and I've heard tell it's a pretty handy little gadget. One ofthe most important service organizations that our school can boast of is this one. Their time is devoted wholly to the interest and enjoyment of the students and faculty. Noon movies and visual aids in the classroom are only a small part ot the activities of this ambitious little group. Their number provides the operator of the PA system at assemblies, plays and various other activities. A trip to the WSYE studio proved an opportunity to develop new interests and advance old ones. Perhaps from this organization will develop interested scientists of tomorrow, capable ofthe answer to stepped-up scientific output. It was the first time in Horseheads history that a basketball team has gone undefeated C8-OJ in the SCL. Also, Horseheads fin- ished second behind EFA in Section IV. It was Coach Gushue's second championship in six years, a great record for a great guy. Bruce Norton scored 988 points for his three-year total, the highest Raider scorer in Horseheads history. His average of 22.4 was highest in the area this year. Features ofthe season: Two squeakers with TAE. Ruger's two seconds to go jump that defeated Homer. Moore's steady board work. Janne's rebounds against Chenango Valley. Norton's consistent scoring all year. Ashley's tremendous final game against E. Davis 8. Co. Well balanced playing and scoring was the feature ofthe CHAMPS. To the general public, it is remembered as a com- plex comedy of the tribulations of Harry and Grace Graves, parents of teen age daughters. The eldest, Lois is a sophisticated sixteen with endless numbers of boy friends. Judy appears as a lively, overimag- inative thirteen. Uncle Willis Reynolds, Grace's brother, helped by Judy, promptly falls in love with Ellen Curtis, daughter of J. B. Curtis, Harry's overbearing boss. J. B., believing that Willis is a criminal, obiects and pandemonium, punctuated by the antics of Judy and her pal Fufty Adams, breaks loose. J. B. sees the truth, Ellen marries Willis, and Judy, emerges a Junior Miss. So your graduation only starts another iourney. Our gifts to you may not be wrapped with gay tinsel flaunting, But you'll find them good companions for the rough and stormy way. Through hard work and ample fortune, you may win to fame, When this occurs be sure to wear your laurel branches lightly. The greatness you have finally savored perhaps is only by your claim, So recognize the helping hands that share this prize held tightly. Each hour will come with new needs for decision. The right too late is no better than the wrong on time. Make your choices with all the wisdom of your dominion, For the sum of these must dwell in your soul sublime. The wide and bounteous earth is each day born anew, So may your days be numberless that you love and are loved Open your eyes to the here and now and ever renew Your gratitude for your divine ability to be moved The swirling shifting currents of the mighty fiood of life Only may to you reveal a great wrong or evil small Now speak you out and never shun the strife For righteous indignation can make heroes of you all Have you emptied out the heartful of gifts we brought?
