XJ Teamwork in the best tradition is exemplified by Mrs. Baldwin helping john Melichar just as she has guided two generations of Horseheads students. n lt is not good that the man should be alone. -Genesis 2:18 TEAMWVORK has been essential to man- kind since the beginning of time. The Chinese symbol for it is pictured here. Yang and Yin, dark and light, are locked in a cirele, each shaped to the other. Thus is represented the C0- operation of opposing factors, man and woman, spiritual and material, Heaven and Earth. Man cannot live alone. God did not intend for him to live alone. Todav that same elusive spirit of getting along spells the dillierence between survival and destruction. This teamwork, cooperation-it means the same however you phrase it-is so vital that civilization is doomed if nations fail to co-exist. In our school life we prepare for our roles as citizens, both national and international, by learning to work together. Here we find coaches and teams pulling together, advisors and oflicers planning together, teachers and students learn- i p together, to acquire the fundamentals and to seek tljuth. XVhen people work together any- thing can be accomplished. And so we should like to picture some of the excellent examples we have found here in our school of this spirit of give and take called TEAMWVORK dication YVe, the class ol 1957, would like to turn the tables now that final marks are near, and hand down a report on a very outstanding English teacher, Mrs. lilaine Sheppard. You plate interest in students at the top ol the list. Your willingness to share our prohlenis and keep our tonlidenees has earned you an A+ rating in this category. Sense ol' humor is a definite qualification lor your prolession, and because you have such an ahundanee, we c'an't grade you anything but excellent. Friendliness is another major cliaraeteristit' and here again, the highest we can giye is IUWJ. Your radiant smile and your Iriendly, yet ladylike manner are appealing to all. Your tlass routine, too, aIi1m1'oat'l1es lmerlettion. Your interest and Varied technique serye to niake the difhcult suhiect, linglish, no less than engrossing. All these attrihutes add up to what we consider an honor teacher. YVe are proud to dedicate this 1957 liquestrian to you Nlrs. Sheppard, our honor teacher. T301 A THANK YOU Board of Education f Mr. Lawrence Shappec President Un hehall ol the stutlent hotly, we would like to salute our lioartl ol' litlut-ation. XVe aren't always aware ol' the services they pro- xitle lor the stutleuts, hut this year the new school, especially, is an outstanding example ol the fine ioh they are doing. The school and the excellent teachers who are ehosen by the lioartl make learning pleasant lor eyery pupil. For this we would like to offer heartfelt thanks antl hope that it will in some small way add to the sraisipa-tim. ol' a joh well clone. This satisfaction is the only recompense lor the hours ol untiring eflort tleyotetl to this job. XVe would also like to express our apprecia- tion to the parents and taxpayers without whose support the new building would have been impossible. K XVe'd like to pay tribute to one of our classmates that we lost in our Sophomore year. Hle all miss I-Ioward's ready smile and magnetic personality. His willingness to pitch in and lend a hand, his good-natured fun, his happy-go- lucky manner made him an outstanding figure. Then, too, he played a pretty mean trombone in the band. The second group ol' boys are trying to show that they Qllon johnson, Tom Atwood and -lack Benjatliinj think that ylohn lmpert is at wonderlul guy. John might be considered at natural leader. ln the last circle ol' students, the two boys and girl flee Kzthler, Penny Kennedy, and Gene Nowlzmj are not willing to accept the lrienclship ol' the girl Qllonnie XVilsonj offering it. Although these stu! dents are merely acting out their parts, this situa- tion frequently occurs. lt is important that the teztcher recognize that such situations are present and attempts should be made to improve the social Mr. A. Pasquale atmosphere to the degree that all students have a chalice to improve themselves by working near and with suitable Companions. In order to discover who the natural leaders are, and give them at chance to exercise leadership, a sociogrztm can be made of any given classroom. The following questions can be used to bring out various personality traits. It is at good idea to do Il sociogratn every ten week period to see who is gaining or losing friends, and il' so, why. Students want to know what has been happening with their human relations and when the constructive criticisms crome from their classmates as well as from the teacher and them- selves, much progress can be made. 1 l. Under the guidance of Mrs. Boggs, these student librarians work in the library one period every day during their junior and senior years. Their duties in the librar , which include checkin ma fazines, readin g S shelves, char in ', slininr, shelvinf books and S' 8 ll in S planning bulletin boards, are invaluable to the school as they keep our library neat and efficiently run. The girls hnd that library work provides them with a sense of responsibility and teaches coopera- tion, qualities which will be useful in any future career. All is not work, however, and our student librarians have a spaghetti dinner in December, hold picnics throughout the year and receive library pins in their Senior year. IA. ..1- FOOTBALL 1956 For the first time in the history of Horseheads, a squad has gone undefeated. Throughout the sea- son Coach Kirkendall's tough football machine con- tinued to grind out victory after victory. The Raider backs appeared to run at will through the holes opened by the powerful veteran forward wall. Not only did the sparkling Blue Raider squad rack up a 7-0-0 record, but they also gained their first undisputed SCL championship. Probably the most exciting accomplishment of the Raider squad was the retaining of the coveted jug from our arch rival, TAE. HHS 27 Owego 13 Clark 1721 clears the way for Coburn 1663. Norton 1613 dives for first down. The Raiders opened the season impressively by crushing Owego in a very exciting game. The powerful Horseheads backs scored in every quarter. Bob Rumsey made good three extra point attempts. HHS 24 Painted Post 7 Horseheads pummeled Post as our brilliant backs again scored in every quarter. Crossing the goal line for Horseheads were Rumsey, Carnegie, Coburn and Clark. HHS 20 XVatkins 7 For the hrst time the Raiders failed to score in the first quarter. ln one of the the most beauti- ful plays of the year the Raiders scored on a per- fectly executed reverse which sent Rumsey around left end all by himself. Also scoring for Horseheads were Bruce Norton and hard driving Rod Clark. HHS 31 Bath I9 Rumsey scored once in every period on runs including a 14-yard reverse. The first pass of the year, Norton-to-Skidmore, was good for a TD. Our hard charging forward wall continuously smothered Bath passers and proved to be a de- cisive factor. HHS 46 lVaverly I3 Horseheads appeared to be spending most of the game in the end zone as they picked up seven touchdowns. Rumsey scored twice and made good four conversions. Other Raiders who rambled into the end zone were: Rod Clark, Ron Coburn. Gerry Margeson, Duane Carnegie and George Gublo. HHS 33 Corning North I-1 Rumsey scored three times and kicked four extra points to dominate the scoring column. Carnegie rammed over for one TD and Ron Coburn slashed over to make it five. The glit- tering backs were supported by a big and mobile line. J., Clark's spectacular block opens a path for Norton and Carnegie 1645. Carnegie blasts his way through. Corning Northside I3 HHS 5 Poor defense allowed Northside to rack up 13 un- lucky runs. Clark broke his finger, which dampened spirits. Baldine had 2 hits. Southside 4 HHS 3 Driscoll and Hollaway's pitching duel offset the 5 HHS hits. Clark had 2, while Skidmore, Ruger, and Driscoll had the others. Heights 7 HHS l Kohan's pitching and a shaky 6th inning led to the downfall of the Blue Raiders. The lone HHS run came on a double by Clark and a fielder's choice. HHS 10 Notre Dame 7 9 hits and 10 runs gave HHS their first and last victory of the season. Skidmore was the winning pitcher, although you will find Runey fans who will argue the point. Watkins 9 HHS 2 HHS had 9 hits but couldn't offset the wide margin Watkins had built up. Ruger and Morrell pitched. Waverly 7 HHS 2 Masteller's great pitching allowed HHS only 2 hits. Runey was the losing pitcher. Skidmore and Ashley had the 2 hits. Although the Blue Raiders won only one game they look forward to the '57 season because they lost only 2 players. Driscoll graduated and Tom Lynch went to Lakemont Academy. A year's ex- perience gives the team a great potential. The workhorses of the pitching staff are returning- Dennis Runey and Tom Skidmore. FIRST ROW: Bruce Norton, Kenneth Ruger, john Coughlin, james Morrell, coach jack fillShllC. SECOND ROYY: Cary Ashley, Robert Rumsey, Robert Randall, Dennis Runey, Rodney Clark. BASKETBALL The Blue Raider basketball squad, coached by Mr. .lack Gushue, came close to the SCI, champion- ship but were eliminated by Owego in the playoff. The squad compiled an impressive lff and 5 overall record for the season. They also had a 7-I record in regular Sill, play. Bruce Norton captured the SCL .Xll-Star Team and Dennis Runey was named to the second team. Gary .Xshley and Ken Ruger received honorable mention. Next year Coach Gushue must replace Rumsey, Runey, Morrell, Clark, and Randall, but his problem may be eased by several yIV's who will graduate to the Varsity. HHS 56-CNS 58 ln the first game of the season, the Raiders met defeat via a last second gasp shot. Three Raiders hit double figures to lead the scoring, Norton, Runey, and Rumsey. HHS 69 - SHS 72 Horseheads dropped their second game also by a close score. The Raiders hit on -1429 of their shots from the field. Scoring honors went to Bob Rumsey, who netted 20 points. HHS 87 - TAE 84 The Blue Raiders collected their first victory of the season as they squeezed by Edison. Norton claimed high scoring honors by his 33-point spree. HHS 44 - EFA 71 The lack of a bign1an to clear the boards proved to be a great disadvantage for Horseheads as Acadeniy dominated the game. The Raiders out-scored them in the final quarter but could not overcome their lead. HHS 72-Troy 62 Ken Ruger dropped in 23 points to lead the Raiders in their romp over Troy. Morrell and Norton also hit double figures. HHS 63-Padua 58 The Raider squad evened their record at 3-3 by outlasting the Padua quintet. Four Raiders hit double figures: Norton, Runey, Ashley, and Ruger. HHS 69 - Waverly 44 By blasting XVaverly, Horseheads gained their second SCL vic- tory against no defeats. Rumsey and Runey paced Horseheads with I7 and lli points respectively. HHS 63 - Owego 64 Horseheads suffered their first defeat in the SCL in a double overtime contest at Uwego. Bruce Norton was high scorer with 20. HHS 69-Watkins 38 The Raiders bombed XVatkins for their third league win against one defeat. Norton, Ashley, and Ruger hit doubles to pace the scoring. HHS 39-EFA 59 Horseheads battled EFA on even terms in the first half but could not hold the pace. High point man for Horseheads was Norton with 17. Ashley, Randall and Morrell fast break the defense. Norton displays his scoring crown form. Runey hits on a jump shot. V,-fQ Clark scores on a one hander. HHS 82 - Waverly 72 XVaverly became another victim of the powerful Raider squad as they fell far behind in the closing minutes. Norton had a big night with 34 and Rumsey chipped in with 20. HHS 100 - CNS 88 Raider shooting was at its finest as they hit that rare cen- tury mark. Runisey put on a sparkling performance as he netted 32 points. Norton, Runey, Ruger, and Morrell all hit doubles for the Raiders. HHS 66-Troy 57 Although it went into overtime. Horseheads trounced Troy in a blazing contest. Once again it was Norton who headed the scoring column as he sank 23 points. HHS 86-Padua 55 The Blue Raiders easily blasted Padua for their ninth vic- tory of the season. Runey and Rumsey led the Raiders with I9 and l8 points respectively. HHS 67 - TAE 56 Our arch rival, Edison, was not much competition this year as we blasted theni for a second time. This season the high point men for Horseheads were: Norton with 23 and Runey' with 17. Ruger drives for a lay up. Rumsey proves a tough man to guard. HHS 57 - SHS 56 This game was almost the reverse of the previous meeting of the two clubs when SHS won by a slim margin. The Raiders just wouldn't accept another defeat. Norton was high man with 17. HHS 70 - Owego 57 As the two teams clashed for the second time of the season, the Raiders clobbered Owego. This game left the two squads tied for the SCL Championship at both Varsity and JV levels. HHS 81-Watkins Glen 67 This victory was the eighth straight for the Raiders and it lifted their overall record to 13 and 5. The win forced a playoff with Owego for the SCL Championship. HHS 62 - Owego 73 This was a heartbreaking defeat for Horseheads after a very successful season. A late spurt by Owego toppled the Raiders from the title.
